Not that I am suggesting such a thing, but here is a thought-provoking article from the Guardian :
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/jun/01/david-cameron-moriarty-downing-street-radical-thatcher

(For those who don't like links, the title of this thread gives a good clue, so you can just go from there. smile)

loopylou Tue 09-Jun-15 18:18:34

Well certainly it's proved that reasoned debate won't be found on here or any of the GN Political threads Ana!

durhamjen Tue 09-Jun-15 18:19:38

You start, loopy.
Where's your reasoned debate?

trisher Tue 09-Jun-15 18:23:14

loopylou "If selling off Royal Mail improves that service and possibly at lower cost to the consumer then yes, I do support it."
Even if it is sold at below its real value and city financiers make a fortune out of it?

Sell off of RBS as well at a loss of £13 billion? Does that make financial sense?

Ana Tue 09-Jun-15 18:28:27

Did it make financial sense when Gordon Brown sold of UK gold reserves at a knock-down price? Were you all howling your disapproval then?

loopylou Tue 09-Jun-15 18:30:17

That's nothing new, that happened under Blair too? I assume that doesn't only happen when there's a Tory government?

As I've already said I'm certainly not politics-savvy enough to articulately argue the point and, especially when it appears any non-Labour response just gets shouted down, I have no desire to set myself up to be battered smile

I'll leave it to the more politically aware to continue the discussion.

durhamjen Tue 09-Jun-15 18:38:35

Not shouting. Just asking for reasoned debate. Just saying Labour did it too is not reasoned.

Ana Tue 09-Jun-15 18:41:04

Have we moved on from a reasoned debate about Cameron's malevolent psychopathic tendencies now, then...?

soontobe Tue 09-Jun-15 18:46:46

trisher - I didnt necessarily mean you. I wasnt even particularly aware of which particular posters were tory-bashing bar perhaps a couple. I was just talking in general terms.

And no, dj, it was only when Ana said what she did with her first post, that I realised that it was that kind of thread.

All of it doesnt answer the question though. I realise that people are scared. And maybe venting. But that is all I can come up with.

durhamjen Tue 09-Jun-15 18:53:59

Excellent article about Gordon Brown's gold sell off. There's a similar one in the Times but I'm not paying to read it all.

durhamjen Tue 09-Jun-15 18:55:26

Sorry, soon, I do not understand. Can you explain yourself a bit better?

soontobe Tue 09-Jun-15 19:06:10

Sorry dj, no. Best I can do I am afraid.

Ana Tue 09-Jun-15 19:09:18

Good answer, soon. Probably best to just let them vent on.

FarNorth Tue 09-Jun-15 19:10:29

Ana, Mr Cameron's possible psychopathic tendencies could be the reason for some of his government's actions- such as selling off Royal Mail and the Royal Bank, both at a loss.
That is one opinion only, of course, and I'd be happy to hear any reasoned views on why those things are a good idea.

durhamjen Tue 09-Jun-15 19:25:32

Or a better idea than Gordon Brown selling the gold. Not every commentator thinks it was a bad idea.
You are always saying it was a bad idea, but do not say why.

trisher Tue 09-Jun-15 19:29:03

soon we are not "venting" we are trying to decide why Cameron is behaving the way he is. My view is that he is there to make money for himself and his friends and I gave examples of how he has done this in the past and will continue to do this in the future. Do you really think that it's OK for him to do this?

Ana Tue 09-Jun-15 19:29:14

Always saying...? Really?
You have a better memory than I have then, durhamjen.

FarNorth Tue 09-Jun-15 19:40:05

Ana why do you choose to bicker in your post when you could be giving me sensible reasons which I asked for, or you could even answer trisher's question although she asked it of soontobe.

Ana Tue 09-Jun-15 19:56:09

Because I know that whatever I said would be pounced upon and torn apart however sensible and/or reasoned it was.

Like loopy, I will leave you all to it! smile

Sorry to hear you take a defeatist attitude and won't give your views. Night-night.

Ana Tue 09-Jun-15 20:25:41

smile Thanks!

grannyonce Tue 09-Jun-15 20:29:44

I only gave the Conservative voter numbers as I was trying to make the point that DJ was banging on about how labour increased their number of votes - so did the Conservatives

if you insist
nulabour number of votes
2010 8,606,517
2015 9,347,304
Conservative number of votes
2010 10,703,654
2015 11,334,576
wish there was a head banging against a wall emoticom
[head/wall]

durhamjen Tue 09-Jun-15 20:39:10

The reason I said that Labour increased their vote was because loopy said that lots of Labour voters voted Tory. I was just pointing out that they didn't. The Libdems voted for both. It had nothing to do with the Tory vote.
Go and bang your head again.

trisher Tue 09-Jun-15 21:30:55

Actually I think some of the posts here have anwered my question-Does the British public get the leaders they deserve? The answer it seems is "Yes"
Shrewd and malevolent psychopaths they may be but Dave, George and Tony have sold themselves to the electorate.

grumppa Tue 09-Jun-15 22:04:10

What is the point of political debate? If it is not debate for its own sake, which can be fun if approached in the right spirit, then it is not to win over the opposition but to sway the undecided middle, who are not going to join in the actual debating process. Add to this the fact that at our age most of us Gransnetters are not going to "cross the floor of the house", then most of our political posts are going to be a dialogue of the deaf, whether we're Cameron-bashing, Blair-baiting, Clegg-kicking or Sturgeon-sniping.

So let's carry on head-banging if it makes us feel better!
