Concern within the Labour Party that Jeremy Corbyn is doing well

A Labour pressure group has asked party members to vote against Jeremy Corbyn in the leadership contest.

Tristram Hunt was also saying, on Marr this morning, that Labour needs an English Labour party as they now have Welsh Labour and Scottish Labour.

This has left me cogitating about where the Labour Party will go.

I notice that Krugman's link is to the Owen Jones article in the Guardian.
Excellent, too.

The greens would almost certainly join a coalition with a left of centre Labour Party, but would hesitate I suspect in joining a right of centre one.

durhamjen Wed 05-Aug-15 17:10:28

Corbyn knows that as well.

We, as on us lot on'ere Penstemon.

DJen has made no secret of the fact that she is a Greens supporter to us( as opposed to just telling me.)
of course you can DJen, anyone on this forum can comment on this thread, just wondered if you had defected to Labour.

The people's QE is really another way of explaining the Keynesian principle of saving when times are good and spending when they are not Jen. What JC (shame some have no irony gene) is saying that we should be spending on these specific area which create growth. It is not a far left view but is one which most politicians agreed with at one time until we got the fantasy austerianism.

Whitewave it would be great if they each had to debate the article. I can't see it happening though.

Yes, the election wasn't that long ago. I certainly remember dj's posts of support for the Green Party.

But I suppose a coalition is all they could hope for, so Corbyn as Labour leader is their best bet.

Penstemmon Wed 05-Aug-15 17:25:34

Defected is a word that means 'desert' and is often associated with negative connotations.

Could people 'move' to another political party or 'adopt' a different party values/policies??

I am back to the power of words....

whitewave Wed 05-Aug-15 17:27:25

Of course the Greens were and still are at the moment left of the LP, given DJ's comments and opinions it would make sense for her to vote Green. Just the same as me though I am more than willing to support a party that makes sense both economically and environmentally, so either party could easily get my vote.

Interesting article here, Gracesgran, about QE. The government can do what it wants with its own debt, then tell us it has reduced.

since it it pretty unlikely that Corbyn ( even if selected for leader) will make it as far as the next General Election, then I guess it doesn't matter if he does the job or not.

rosesarered Wed 05-Aug-15 18:14:24

Somebody more electable will be chosen in about three years or less I am guessing.

Gracesgran Wed 05-Aug-15 18:57:05

Interesting Jen. Thanks.

Ana Wed 05-Aug-15 18:59:54

I agree, roses - he'd be 71 by then and that's a bit long in the tooth to be a PM these days.

Penstemmon Wed 05-Aug-15 19:28:54

ana I would have said it was about attitude and general health rather than age itself. I do think that he is stimulating debate and giving a space for the large number of left of centre voters to get their voice heard. During the election there was no-one I felt I really wanted to vote for. If JC gets alternative ideas discussed and aired then I think that is a good thing. Never close down debate.

Penstemmon Wed 05-Aug-15 19:29:51

ana just to say that last sentence is a general thought and not aimed at you!

Ana Wed 05-Aug-15 19:31:54

I'd never have credited myself with so much influence, Penstemmon! grin

nightowl Wed 05-Aug-15 19:40:49

Ageism on gransnet! We can't complain about it anywhere else can we?

Ana Wed 05-Aug-15 20:17:01

Oh, for goodness sake...

Gracesgran Wed 05-Aug-15 20:24:29

Good point nightowl.

Iam64 Wed 05-Aug-15 20:49:21

I'm vacillating between Jeremy C and Yvette C. Yes, I know they're poles apart. I attended the Hustings locally and the affection and admiration I have for JC was confirmed. I'd felt underwhelmed by the leadership election until Jeremy joined. He is saying the same things he's said for 40 years, which I like. He seems honest and genuine. He's added a proper political dimension that I feel is needed. The hall was full of enthusiastic young people, something politics desperately needs. Thanks for that JC.

I liked the way Yvette Cooper presented herself and responded in interviews during the build up to the last election. I liked what she said at the Hustings and the way she presented herself. I'm not an Andy B fan, Liz Kendal seems out of her depth and doesn't have the warmth needed in a Labour leader. Alan Johnson would be my favoured candidate but of course, he doesn't want the job (sensible man)

I hope that's middle if the road and boring enough for some rather demanding posters on here, who are demanding that 'ordinary' labour voters speak out about their intentions in the leadership election.

rosesarered Wed 05-Aug-15 20:54:47

I think that 'demanding' is a bit strong, but it would be nice and a bit more balanced perhaps if other people joined this thread. so far it is mainly Corbyn fans, but that is because there are only a handful of posters constantly posting about his all round general wonderful ness. I think Nightowl also thought it would be a good idea.

durhamjen Wed 05-Aug-15 21:14:18

Is that because the thread is about Corbyn? Or could it be because there are not many who do not like Corbyn?

nightowl Wed 05-Aug-15 21:20:31

Thanks for that Iam. I am interested to hear views about the other candidates, even though I'm a Jeremy fan (just a sentimental old socialist at heart) smile

Anniebach Wed 05-Aug-15 23:09:58

rosesarered, why would the labour party get shot of Corbyn after three years - should he become party leader? I can't recall the Labour Party switching leaders mid term
