He wont have a makeover.
His clothes are part of his image.
He wont want to look posh or part of the establishment.

rosesarered Tue 15-Sept-15 07:56:09

I was thinking of the future annie!

rosesarered Tue 15-Sept-15 07:56:43

With reference to overthrows.smile

Anan Tue 15-Sept-15 10:22:56

His life has been relatively long and he does not seem to have changed his ideas in response to the revolution in living conditions since he was born.

Anniebach Tue 15-Sept-15 10:33:40

I doubt he was concerned with living conditions when in the pram , so less than fifty years , has there been great improvements in living conditions since the sixties? Is poverty, unemployment, homelessness, disability etc easier now?

rosequartz Tue 15-Sept-15 10:45:00

On a lighter note, I had a lovely chat with Mr Corbyn early this morning. We talked about general things, mainly his childhood and his mother (who taught at my school - a grammar school) and the jumper she knitted for him.
He is extremely charming and very persuasive because somehow he managed to inviegle me into promising to do some spreadsheets for him, collating data and working out how his popularity increased over the election period and the likelihood of a landslide victory at the next election.
I spent quite a while rushing around our enormous old house trying to find a space to do the spreadsheets, taking over DGD's little desk, panicking because I haven't done anything like this in years.

rosequartz Tue 15-Sept-15 10:47:09

Ps I forgot to add that I was very relieved when DH woke me up with a cup of tea wink

It was a very vivid dream, but thank goodness it was just a dream - bloody spreadsheets!

Ceesnan Tue 15-Sept-15 10:52:58

smile

rosequartz Tue 15-Sept-15 10:57:36

Ps we don't have an enormous old house either!

POGS Tue 15-Sept-15 11:35:02

Corbyn will either shift position or his party MP's will be told to shift theirs. Obviously.

Dianne Abbott for example has said there is no way we will leave NATO.

Others know his view on Trident will not be a shoo in.

Corbyn will probably shift on leaving the EU , however The TUC are saying that Labour and the TUC will vote to 'leave' the EU if Cameron gets backing from the EU on workers rights. This could have the potential for massive problems within the Labour Party. Watch this space .

Both Corbyn and more so John McDonnell can no longer have the autonomy of being rebels on the periphery they have elected to join the establishment.

Corbyn for example has accepted a place on the Privvy Council which means he will swear on oathe to be a true and faithfull servant of the Queen. He will swear on oathe to give his allegiance to the Queen and promises to uphold acts of parliament. etc.

If you read the oathe I question how he as a person who has championed the abolition of the monarchy could agree to join the Privvy Council I would have thought it was his opportunity to prove to those who voted for him he will be 'a different type of politician/a conviction politician'. Others may see it differently but I thought the whole point to backing Corbyn was the belief he will uphold his principles , he is a breath of fresh air.

Today he is attending St Paul's Cathedral service joining in with those who are 'commemorating' the Battle of Britain.

There is a question over his attendance at the cenotaph and what colour poppy he will wear. His conviction should make him carry on wearing a white poppy and probably not attend . It may seem like trivia to some but it will show others just how different he is and whether or not he is as principled as believed or just playing the political game and happy to abide by the rules like all the others. It would be hard to do stick to his principles but that is what is expected of him by those who voted for him surely.

All in all Corbyn won a vote and deserves to be given a chance to show how he will be as the Leader of the Opposition , too early to tell. Corbyn also runs the risk of a backlash from his supporters and the Unions if he does not hold truthful to his words and promises and I don't envy his challenge.

Anniebach Tue 15-Sept-15 12:19:18

I hope he does as I and many do, wear a white and a red poppy , rules have nothing to do with wearing a poppy and why because a person is a pacifist does it mean they do not honour the dead of wars?

Ceesnan Tue 15-Sept-15 12:43:50

www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/jeremy-corbyn-i-won-t-wear-white-poppy-at-cenotaph-a2947701.html That's that sorted then.

rosequartz Tue 15-Sept-15 12:51:04

I agree, anniebach.

It is nothing to do with glorification, it is remembrance.

Eloethan Tue 15-Sept-15 12:54:44

I would say they (white poppy wearers) honour them a good deal more than solemn-faced politicians who express their sorrow about the many war dead and then champion the Arms Fair in East London. The government has extended invitations to 61 countries including many, such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and Azerbaijan, who are recognised to have an appalling human rights record.

whitewave Tue 15-Sept-15 12:55:41

What does need to happen is a social media website that balances all the vitriol eminating from the right wing press.

Gracesgran Tue 15-Sept-15 13:12:02

Crumbs POGS you do seem to be getting hot under the collar.

Corbyn will either shift position or his party MP's will be told to shift theirs.
Or they could find a consensus which is much more likely in my opinion.

Corbyn will probably shift on leaving the EU
The EU is shifting daily on what the EU is about. There are few people, to right or left, who think it is all good or all bad. How about waiting to see what happens, after all your is only one view.

Both Corbyn and more so John McDonnell can no longer have the autonomy of being rebels on the periphery they have elected to join the establishment.
They certainly have a long history of standing up for their principles against people who make no effort to take principle into account so they will know they have to listen to all views. In my opinion the most likely outcome of the Corbyn win in this area will be more Conservatives feeling they can rebel. There are many to both the right and left of the Conservative Party who have qualms about what their own party is doing.

Corbyn ... has accepted a place on the Privvy Council which means he will swear on oathe to be a true and faithfull servant of the Queen.
I can't see the problem. He may not want her as head of state but he is not suggesting a revolution with beheading, etc., as far as I know and I am sure we all know we have to accept what exists while we work to change it.

abide by the rules What rules? It really is one of the nastiest suggestions to put forward, often made by those on the right, that you cannot hate war and also honour the dead of those wars who are, after all, people sent to fight by politicians.

Everyone who wishes the left ill is projecting ahead and guessing what may happen. Add to that the press, who think it is their right to demand enough to fill their 24 hour news from anyone they can bully and a social media which offers everyone the right to a view even when they have nothing - or even lies - on which to base it and it is no wonder there is such a cauldron of expectation.

Perhaps, in the hope of a little peace and time for things to actually happen I should be quoting Cameron and saying "calm down dear, calm down".

Anniebach Tue 15-Sept-15 14:17:05

Perhaps the media will realise many in this country will see their tactics in trying to interview him when they demand is a form of bullying , I found that clip of SKY news following him and demanding questions was a disgrace and I would say this of anyone who was hassled as he was that night.

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 15-Sept-15 14:32:14

Grannyknot that's a pretty good summary in the NY article, a little bit scaremongering, but not the same level as we're reading here in the UK.

I wonder many people have realised that his initials are JC (minus middle name)? Some will be horrified, so ecstatic, and some like me will giggle. grin

He's got a difficult road ahead, but he's an intelligent man who knows only too well how politics work. His success and failure will come down to his choice of battles.

alternativegran Tue 15-Sept-15 15:05:01

I liked the NY article and as for JC it is a giggle but I do consider him an atheist with spiritual values.

We so need MPs with integrity, I was shocked to hear that even two conservative ministers Tobias Elwood and Edward Timpson have not paid back wrongly claimed expenses and they will now be written off. In any other walk of life the bailiffs would be called in, perhaps part of the opposition to Jeremy Corbyn from both sides comes from the way in which his appointment challenges their sense of entitlement.

rosesarered Tue 15-Sept-15 15:26:09

it will be interesting to see, as POGS has suggested already, how establishment minded he will now become.Rebelling against all and sundry will not be possible for him now, reaching 'consensus' means that he can't just push his own views. As leader of the Opposition, he certainly will have to wear a red poppy and be at the cenotaph ( though the duffel coat option is always available.) grin
He will have to get to grips with the push and shove of the press too, everyone else at Westminster has to!

whitewave Tue 15-Sept-15 15:40:06

I understand that his whole stance is to be as inclusive as possible and rather than introducing a particular policy without consultation, his idea is to listen and come to a consensus, so yes a consensus will be reached and policies introduced.

Where I do think there may be difficulties will be with those Blairite Labour Parliamentary members who cannot understand that JCs mandate from the Labour Party members has rejected a watered down Tory party and are demanding a distinct and social democratic party.

Anniebach Tue 15-Sept-15 16:00:35

I can predict front page of tomorrow's Tory press, SKY new just showed a still of Corbyn at the service, the two people to his right are singing , he is not. According to screech Burley they are singing the national anthem grin

Anniebach Tue 15-Sept-15 16:02:25

It was not a duffle coat and realy , what a very sad, old Tory joke

Anniebach Tue 15-Sept-15 16:04:01

He does not rebel against all and sundry, such exageration.
