As jinglbellsfrocks had the last word in the last thread about Jermy Corbyn, I am starting a new one.

Do you think that the election of Jeremy Corbyn has scuppered Labour's chances of winning the next election or has it revitalised the party?

Just watching JC addressing the women's conference here in Brighton.

durhamjen Sat 26-Sept-15 17:38:50

Lucky you. I wonder if Anniebach is there.

whitewave Sat 26-Sept-15 17:51:35

Oh is she here? We could have met up!!

durhamjen Sat 26-Sept-15 17:55:11

Sorry, I do not know. Hope I haven't got your hopes up unnecessarily. I know she wanted to go to the count in London but decided not to.

rosequartz Sat 26-Sept-15 18:59:50

Has anyone asked him about women in the top Shadow ......
Oh, never mind.

Gracesgran Sat 26-Sept-15 23:23:50

Jen I agree with your hope that "all those who think we should not give money to other countries have watched it" although I do think we should really make sure the money is direct where it is needed. What would it have cost to build the small dam that the man needed and help with a basic irrigation system?

I was like you, fascinated by the simplicity of getting people out of absolute poverty but it also seemed that once that is done access to education quickly improves situations even further.

I was way out with the quiz too. smile

durhamjen Sat 26-Sept-15 23:32:09

Roseq, how important do you think health and education are?

Yes, Gracesgran, it was interesting to see that those countries which are worst off and have the largest family size are actually given the least. I wonder where Syria are on the list.
That's why I give money to Actionaid, Gracesgran. They look for the smallest ways to help people the most, like ways to bring clean water and power. It's the Schumacher Institute.

Eloethan Sat 26-Sept-15 23:49:01

Went to collectour passes for the conference. Saw the actress who plays Izzy in Coronation Street waiting to collect hers. We are going tomorrow.

Gracesgran Sun 27-Sept-15 09:25:47

How wonderful Eloethan. I do think this is an important bit of history. Looking forward to your "view from the conference*

Anniebach Sun 27-Sept-15 09:40:23

All the conferences over the years and I miss this one, couldn't leave my dog. Wish I was there, debates not spin, love it.

Rosequartz, health and education are not of importance ?

Anniebach Sun 27-Sept-15 09:44:28

Eloethan, I use to meet Tim West and Prunella Scales there most years , sadly not now. Hope those who are in Brighton will tell us what's really going on, the beeb only speaks of back stabbing and blood flowing

durhamjen Sun 27-Sept-15 12:00:44

Business not important, either, Anniebach.

Just been watching JC on Andrew Marr's programme. I really can't make up my mind about that man. Having lived through and suffered from, a left wing Labour government I really don't want to see another one.

Most of his supporters are young and I understand this. When I was 17 I wore a red enamelled badge on which was a golden hammer and sickle. In those days communism sounded wonderful. Needless to say when I began to discover what it was really like living in the USSR I changed my mind.
What is that saying? 'If you're not a Socialist when young, you're hard in the heart. If you're still a Socialist when adult, you're soft in the head.'
If everyone were a Socialist it would be an ideal world but very few of us are unselfish enough so it doesn't work. However, young people tend to be soft hearted and would be attracted by JC's rhetoric.

Have you noticed though that he isn't quite as adamant as he was about the changes he wants to make? He has in effect a coalition Shadow Cabinet. If he is forced to relinquish some of his extreme plans, will the young forgive him?

Anniebach Sun 27-Sept-15 12:41:49

The young conservatives have no problem with Cameron

f77ms Sun 27-Sept-15 12:59:38

I ,for one, am delighted about Corbyn being elected . He is a principled , honest politician the likes of which we have not seen for a long time . He actually answers questions which are put to him with no spin which is so refreshing.

The right wing media have tried their best to discredit him but most people I speak to are seeing through it lately.

What he seems to stand for is a fairer society , how can that be wrong or misinformed ? smile

f77ms Sun 27-Sept-15 13:01:32

You have hit the nail on the head there saying we are too selfish to be socialist !!

Gracesgran Sun 27-Sept-15 13:18:38

He even tried to answer the unanswerable in the best way he could f77ms. It is really silly to ask him the outcome of discussions before they take place; it just makes the journalists look rather old-fashioned and out of step.

I wonder what those who would be prepared to pay up to have their say in the Conservative Party would say they want if given the chance?

soontobe Sun 27-Sept-15 13:35:48

I havent watched the whole of the interview . I intend to at some point, word for word!

I did notice at some point about something or other, that he wants to bring people around to his point of view.
He didnt say others points of view!

Welcomed what he said about business having lawyers and accountants to move money about to avoid taxes.

Didnt agree with him still thinking it was ok to bring IRA into Houses of Parliament when he did.

So so glad he doesnt want to talk to IS at this stage.

soontobe Sun 27-Sept-15 13:41:25

He seems to be staying out of Queen issues now!

He does answer questions straight on the whole.

soontobe Sun 27-Sept-15 13:51:32

I got lost about the Syria stuff. I dont know enough. I think they are going to say more tomorrow.
Glad he said he was not in support of Putin.

Nato have had a long term agenda of pushing eastwards? That is what he said. Again, I dont know enough.

Didnt like what he said about John McDonald. Seemed in some way to support him. Didnt come down hard on him at all. More concerned about his sentence!
Which is weird thinking about it, as he goes for peace.

durhamjen Sun 27-Sept-15 14:01:31

I thought it was an excellent interview. He answered the questions very thoroughly and carefully. He did not obfuscate, like many politicians try to do.
Many new Labour supporters are not young. Many of them are Gransnetters or their children. I think my two sons and their partners are quite mature enough to know what they want, and are Labour supporters.

I agree with him about having a party which is inclusive, and does not walk by on the other side.

durhamjen Sun 27-Sept-15 14:02:43

What was wrong with what he said about John McDonnell?

Anniebach Sun 27-Sept-15 14:16:45

soon, do you never think talk instead of killing is worth trying?

soontobe Sun 27-Sept-15 15:00:14

Cant be bothered to answer that Ab.

dj, at no point did he say that his behaviour was wrong as far as I can remember.
Do you think it was?

Can I ask both of you while you are here.

Do you think he can do no wrong? Because that is how it comes across to me

soontobe Sun 27-Sept-15 15:00:59

JC that is.
