Watching the news and there have been 2 separate incidents in Paris (one explosion near a football ground and one shoot out at a restaurant.). 4 dead so far. So awful. What is happening?

TriciaF Tue 17-Nov-15 08:32:11

Adding to Wilma's posts ( I know, off topic) - many Germans were forced to join the Nazi party through fear of reprisals if they didn't.

granjura Tue 17-Nov-15 09:09:35

Which is why I mentionned the 'Book Thief' as it is an excellent illustration of that reality, same for protecting Jews.

Alea Tue 17-Nov-15 09:15:32

But was frankly irrelevant, whether the book (excellent) or the FIL (dire). An unnecessary diversion.

Alea Tue 17-Nov-15 09:16:16

Ha ha"FIL" should have been "film "!

Putin has now admitted it was a bomb that brought the Russian plane down. So he will now be committed to defeating IS even more. They lost 224 people.

whitewave Tue 17-Nov-15 09:38:45

wilm out of my head- doesn't happen very oftengrin

rosesarered Tue 17-Nov-15 09:49:07

So now ISIS has the means to bring a plane down, nobody thought that they had.

whitewave Tue 17-Nov-15 10:04:12

I think the weapons were captured from the Iraqi army who ran away. The arms had been supplied by the USA, who also trained them, not in how not to be cowards though!!!!

Everybody and his auntie can make a bomb. The debate about the Russian jet was whether ISIS had weapons that would bring a jet down from normal cruising height. In any case, 9/11 demonstrated that you don't need explosives.

granjura Tue 17-Nov-15 11:25:31

Alea- why is it an un-necessary diversion to show just how so many Germans had to pretend to be behind Hitler, to save themsleves and their family, in the context of this thread?

Following this statement by KnickerWilmaFit:

For example, in Germany the vast majority of voters supported the Nazi Party, not the minority

granjura Tue 17-Nov-15 11:43:39

just as many Muslims in some areas have to appear to be behind their Government or other armed and dominant forces- to survive and save their children?

Alea Tue 17-Nov-15 11:56:16

Granjura you seem to like taking a thread as far off topic as possible especially when your comments have had little support.
Your introduction of The Book Thief was in fact on the other thread and seemed like a particularly clumsy way of getting out of an unfortunate and indefensible comment about the ostensible "brainwashing" of British armed forces.
I repeat my reply at the time:
A bit of changing the subject here!!
Not arguing with the dehumanising element of warfare, look at the famous football match in WWI, but let's leave reviewing "The Book Thief" out of it, and agree that the quote about "brainwashing" was, is and remains tosh
The word was ill -chosen, the notion that our armed forces were brainwashed, downright insulting. I don't care how fond of your neighbour you were, you have misjudged the British mentality, especially when up against the evil which was Nazi Germany

And please don't anybody lecture those who have direct knowledge of what it was like to be unfortunate enough to have lived or grown up under the rising Nazi regime, it was nothing like as black and white as it may seem with the benefit of 80 + years of hindsight.

PS the member's name is WilmaKnickersfit
Try saying it, it may have lost something in translation to KnickerWilmafit grin

granjura Tue 17-Nov-15 13:10:44

WilmaKnickersFit- I am so sorry ;)

TriciaF also makes the point well- and in this context, and I am sorry to repeat, the Book Thief does illustrate that point very well. So I'll stand by my mention of it- as it is NOT a diversion, and a direct reply to a well made point - and I would urge anyone who has not read it to do so.

Brainswashing was indeed not the right word to use on the other thread- but dehumanising and desensitising, and I am very prepared to apologise for that- but felt at the time it was better not to.

My neighbour was 19 at the time- they had a just cause of course in this case- but it still stayed with him for life- they had been told they were bombing factories and soldiers- and that the towns had very few civilians. Despite the cause being just- it still haunted him for life.
I won't say another word about it out of respect.

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 17-Nov-15 14:18:34

No problem gj it was quite funny. grin

I think dehumanising and desensitising are both appropriate words describing what happens during conflicts. I received an email via The Syria Campaign from Nicolas Henin, the French journalist who was held hostage by ISIL, with a link to his article in yesterday's Guardian about France's military response to the Paris attacks. I don't think it had been posted, so this is the link

granjura Tue 17-Nov-15 14:47:51

Thank you WilmaKF (darent' risk it again) for forgiving me ;)

and great article by Nicolas Henin- thanks for posting it.

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 17-Nov-15 14:52:32

Just call me Wilma. wink

Yes, the article is an interesting read, especially as it is written by a Frenchman.

granjura Tue 17-Nov-15 14:58:56

Donald Trump is now shooting is mouth off all over the place, saying that if only the French civilians had been allowed to carry guns- none of this would have happened. This man is sick.

jogginggirl Tue 17-Nov-15 15:54:14

Thank you for posting this article Wilma - it certainly presents a different view ....

As for Mr Trump - words fail me angry

Helaine Tue 17-Nov-15 16:18:29

I sincerely hope now the nations are drawing together and security especially cyber security are getting huge injections of money that these murdering scum will be annihilated??

grandMattie Tue 17-Nov-15 17:27:33

I have, this minute, come back from a long weekend in Paris. We arrived on Friday afternoon and were ther for the whole business. We were really touched at how the Parisians have been behaving. I have missed the thread of this discussion, but it was remarkable how Paris was this weekend. Yes, it was quiet; Yes, peopel were tense in the Metro; Yes, we felt overwhelmed by events, but we were met with nothing but sympathy for our spoiled holiday, kindness and help whereever we went - far, far more than normal.

rosesarered Tue 17-Nov-15 17:37:59

That's good grandmattie an awful time for all there.

Geminite Tue 17-Nov-15 20:46:01

Umm.. I have not read EVERY post on here but let me say that what happened in Paris last Friday was dreadful. I am suprised that the Russians waited for clear evidence that the bomb on the plane that killed 224 people was not a terrorist bomb unlike France who went in straight away?
I have a very uncomfortable fealing about Germany after all have DOMINATED the fact that all EU contries should take their quota.? They have not been part of containing ISIS nor the wars in the middle east?
1.Fact. I had a German Student some 20 years ago who living in my home was insistant on talking about the war... she told me that Germany never did anything like we Brits did? She went on to say that Germany may have been defeated in the war BUT they will control Europe through the money markets......I swear on my kids lives thats what she said.... ...
So Im just sitting here thinking, the EU hasnt worked out quite how Germany wanted it to. Has anyone asked the question why Germany are so keen on ALL of EUROPE embracing all the Syrian refugees across all boarders? Just a thought?
Oh and another thought, why and as proclaimed in the press are Muslims in this country not condoning what has happened... forget Paris, talk UK?
I feel very sad. I dont think people especially the youngsters (and I am raising the bar to young males is their mid to late 20's)have a clue what this is about? Very, very sad but this, personally I feel could be the begining of the end............lets hope we have the same values and enough power to overcome this wave of barbaric uprising that has no respect for life and above all freedom to be who you are and what you want to achieve. Rather than a sad little man who is prepared to kill himself because he will go to "heaven" and be blessed with a great shag with some virgins??????.. Wow I would blow myself up for that? Riiiiight!
