UK? No

BBC news announced the English football squad would be given extra protection as would the other home countries . Seems we should refer to the UK as England and Co. Or England and the rest

grumppa Tue 31-May-16 14:47:57

The Beeb could have done better, but it's not straightforward. British wouldn't do because that excludes NI; UK wouldn't do because that includes Scotland, who didn't make it to the Euro Finals.

And to have a UK team would not be popular with any of the UK constituent football associations, who would have only one vote in UEFA and FIFA.

Anniebach Tue 31-May-16 14:53:22

Fair enough grumppa, but the home countries would have been betterthan England and the others ,or named the countries

Anniebach Tue 31-May-16 14:58:31

Trisher, I am not putting words in your mouth , the four countries pay the same licence fee , you think England should be prominent because there are more English, there are more because it is a bigger country

I do not see it as an attack on Wales by the BBC, it was an insult

durhamjen Tue 31-May-16 14:58:45

That makes it worse, grumppa. Didn't even know about Scotland not being in the finals.
So they should just have said England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Hollycat Tue 31-May-16 15:02:24

Sorry durhamjen you're quite right the EVEL rule was first used in January and the Scots objected loudly. As regards population of London - I saw it on the BBC a week or so back, but of course can't remember where - think it was Paxman on the EU. However, according to the Independent the pop of London is expected to rise to 10m by 2024 with no sign of slowing. E &SE growing faster than national average at 8.9% & 8.6% respectively - slowest in NE at 3.1% (26.5.16) new figures are expected from ONS in June. So no, not Brexit scaremongering.

Jalima Tue 31-May-16 15:10:33

Here you are anniebach, the Beeb is not ignoring Wales altogether:
www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/34665078

And as grumppa said, Scotland was not mentioned because they didn't qualify.

I hope it wasn't Huw Edwards reading said news - he should be ashamed of himself if he was. definitely worth a complaint if so.

trisher Tue 31-May-16 15:18:34

There isn't an English news dj- so just basing this on numbers of viewers and the fact that there is a BBC Wales and a BBC Scotland which could slant the news to suit their audiences. If there wasn't a BBC Wales (Like there isn't a BBC North East really- just small regional unit) I would fully expect the news to use all the names.
It is also interesting that BBC England link to football gives info about the Welsh team as well Whereas BBC Wales link to football only gives info about the Welsh team??!!!

Anniebach Tue 31-May-16 15:30:24

I didn't know there was a BBC England

Anniebach Tue 31-May-16 15:33:22

It was on BBC Radio news , thank you for the link to Welsh football

durhamjen Tue 31-May-16 15:38:08

" Another 4 million migrants are expected in London alone by 2020 (Gov figures)."

This is what you said, Hollycat. So it was just you scaremongering, not Brexit, was it?
A rise to 10 million by 2024 is not the same, is it, considering the population was 8.6 million in 2015.

durhamjen Tue 31-May-16 15:42:58

And don't foget, you were just talking about migrants, not the population as a whole.

thatbags Tue 31-May-16 16:41:11

grumppa, I thought the entire island of Ireland was in the British Isles. Has it drifted off?

British Isles is not equal to Britain which is not equal to Great Britain which is not equal to UK. They are all different.

durhamjen Tue 31-May-16 17:17:54

There isn't a BBC England, Annie. I think trisher is getting mixed up with the NHS. There are four of those.

trisher Tue 31-May-16 17:38:06

Link to BBC England- may only be on-line and only applies to news www.bbc.co.uk/news/england

Hollycat Tue 31-May-16 17:44:45

No durhamjen I explained I did see it on the television just can't remember the programme, and the figure of 4 million in London was not only mentioned but came up in large yellow type too to emphasise it. It was either the Paxman programme or the BBC "Last Whites in the Eastend", I believe. The figures I have given you were the only ones I could find quickly. You must admit they're still pretty scary.

durhamjen Tue 31-May-16 18:04:29

But they are not right, are they? It's impossible to have an extra 4 million migrants in London by 2020. Even you must admit that.

Jalima Tue 31-May-16 18:15:58

There isn't a BBC England
Oh no, is that discrimination?

Ah, just found a link to the FB page for BBC England
www.facebook.com/bbcer/

grumppa Tue 31-May-16 18:16:17

I never mentioned the British Isles, thatbags.

daphnedill Tue 31-May-16 18:19:33

I'm very English. I spent years researching my family history and I don't have any non-English ancestors going back at least three centuries (and further on some lines).

I always thought that the English were supposed to be well known for fairness and championing the underdog, which to me includes minorities of all sorts. Democracy (rule by the majority) needs to balanced with respect for those not in a majority and that's how the UK has somehow bumbled along.

It saddens me that a number of posts on this thread don't seem very English.

Jalima Tue 31-May-16 18:20:14

Fair enough grumppa, but the home countries would have been betterthan England and the others ,or named the countries

But if the term home countries was mentioned instead of England and the other home countries then Scotland might feel left out just because they were rubbish didn't qualify.

In fact, neither of the above is correct.
Who do they employ at the BBC these days - have you ever read the sub-titles? hmm

obieone Tue 31-May-16 18:21:15

I haven't read all the thread properly[sorry, I dont have as much time as I used to], but I think Ab has a point.
The BBC is the BBC of the UK.

durhamjen Tue 31-May-16 18:22:30

Yes, they are particularly interesting/rubbish when watching parliament on 131.

Jalima Tue 31-May-16 18:25:50

Oh dear daphnedil what a good thing I deleted my remark about Scotland being rubbish at football.
They do have other qualities of course.
And having such a small population does limit their choice of players.
Although Wales has qualified with a much smaller population and NI with even less. smile

daphnedill Tue 31-May-16 18:27:22

Maybe this is what you saw, Hollycat.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/05/25/population-surge-to-change-the-face-of-england-forever/

The population of the whole of England is predicted to rise by 4 million by 2024.

Only half of the predicted rise will be caused by immigration. The other major factor in the rise is the ageing population.

I'm not sure what this has to do with Wales.

daphnedill Tue 31-May-16 18:31:39

@Jalima

I didn't even know there was a football championship this year :-), so I didn't even know who'd qualified.

The Scots make mighty fine whisky, Arbroath smokies and marmalade and produce wonderful salmon, which I find much more satisfying than football.
