You didn't think I would ignore this did you?

rosesarered Fri 03-Jun-16 13:26:44

Nope Trisher accent not a problem ( I am a Northerner too) but you probably popped that in as a bit of an insult eh?
These threads get worse and worse.

theconversation.com/why-do-you-make-stupid-decisions-when-the-experts-tell-you-otherwise-60020

Here's another article I did not write.
It was written by another university professor.
Try to remember that headlines are not the whole of an article. That's why there are so many redtop readers, they go by the headline.

granjura Fri 03-Jun-16 13:30:19

Well I am a foreigner (as so many of you like to remind me often ;) ) - and English is not my MT- but I find Owen Jones so easy to understand- he speaks really fast, but his thoughts are so well organised and put together and he manages to pack so much in a minute or 2.

granjura Fri 03-Jun-16 13:31:47

Frank Field on the other hand seemed to lose the train of thought and couldn't find suitable ends to his sentences- until Dimbleby tactfully helped him along. It was embarrassing.

durhamjen Fri 03-Jun-16 13:44:30

That's what I thought, granjura.
Here's a very interesting speech from Owen Jones.

www.opendemocracy.net/node/102658

It's from a conference called Another Europe is possible.

Anniebach Fri 03-Jun-16 14:00:17

Hamilton claims the rise in house prices is caused by immigrants . So immigrants who are responsible for keeping wages low or sponging off benefits are buying houses

trisher Fri 03-Jun-16 14:11:32

No rosesarered I am struggling to understand how you could not understand a young man who spoke so well. Sometimes accents do affect someone's understanding. I am pleased others understood him, I certainly did.

granjura Fri 03-Jun-16 14:33:56

I certainly hope some will click on the link and listen to his brilliant speech - about our NHS and other institution, energy, transport, being undermined and privatised by our own Govt, and not the EU. And I'd be very surprised if anyone could say, even if they disagree with what he is saying, that it is not very well delivered, coherent and very easy to understand. Bravo.

durhamjen Fri 03-Jun-16 14:42:10

Lots more where that comes from, granjura. A very interesting and exciting movement.

durhamjen Fri 03-Jun-16 14:46:49

If nobody else wants to watch the whole eight minutes of his speech, the first two or three minutes are very good.

durhamjen Fri 03-Jun-16 15:36:41

An excellent article here about Corbyn and TTIP.

www.independent.co.uk/voices/corbyn-has-rejected-ttip-even-as-he-campaigns-to-remain-and-the-eu-needs-to-listen-a7063176.html

Now all we need is to vote to stay in the EU and get rid of Cameron and pals because of their electoral fraud.

JessM Fri 03-Jun-16 15:46:35

I believe Owen Jones is on Any Questions tonight.
There is a shortage of housing in the south east because the economy is growing rapidly there - London, as it has often done, is sucking in more workers, and the powers that be are not doing anything like enough about housing the workforce. Where the workers come from is not the cause of the problem.

granjura Fri 03-Jun-16 15:55:59

There are indeed many parts of the country where there is no shortage of housing, and where houses even sit on the market for years on end- where mining, ship building, steel or manufacturing has disappeared- without the EU being the reason/s.

And of course many immigrants are vastly and shamefully exploited in many areas with dreadful accomodation at massive prices, by unscrupulous landlords (not all of them British of course).

granjura Fri 03-Jun-16 15:59:35

Again, dozens of articles in the press about this exploitation. Including this one from the Guardian last June:

'Housing raid finds 26 people living in three-bedroom east London home

Newham council describes property, which had seven people living in a windowless basement, as one of worst examples of illegal overcrowding'

durhamjen Fri 03-Jun-16 16:04:06

A quiz to find out how much you know about other EU countries.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-eu-referendum-36400702

durhamjen Fri 03-Jun-16 16:10:57

"The father of the prominent leave campaigner Boris Johnson, Stanley Johnson, who helped write environment directives at the European commission, says: “I personally believe that our country’s greatest resource – its nature – will be better protected and better preserved for future generations if we remain an active, full, partner within Europe.” "

I wonder what the conversation goes like when they meet.

From this article - www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/jun/02/what-has-the-eu-ever-done-for-my-fellow-creatures

durhamjen Fri 03-Jun-16 16:16:02

"The Office of National Statistics says that while the numbers of EU workers in Britain has risen by 700,000 since 2013, they are outnumbered by the extra one million Britons who have gone into employment in the same period. The number of British citizens working in the UK labour force is now at the near-record level of 28 million. That compares with 3 million foreign nationals."

From this article - www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/may/20/reality-check-are-eu-migrants-really-taking-british-jobs

That does not mean that the foreign nationals are taking British houses either. The foreign nationals I know are all living with British nationals, so no extra houses needed for them.

petra Fri 03-Jun-16 16:25:04

Annie What Hamilton means is: because of the demand on housing by immigrants, Rackman (you remember him) type landlords are pushing up the rents which is making it a nightmare for people to find a decent place to live at a realistic rent.

durhamjen Fri 03-Jun-16 16:26:23

This is such a shame. I think as a country we have benefited from an influx of foreign students.

www.politics.co.uk/blogs/2016/05/31/foreign-students-stay-away-following-tory-attack

As I've said previously, it's not just EU students; it's students from all other countries who are just not applying to come here any more. At least there will not need to be an increase in the number of universities.

durhamjen Fri 03-Jun-16 16:33:35

I wonder how many will agree with Janet Street-Porter on this.

www.independent.co.uk/voices/eu-referendum-migration-migrants-arrive-british-shores-policing-coastlines-remain-eu-a7063261.html

On the other hand, I am not bothered why people vote to remain, as long as they do.

rosesarered Fri 03-Jun-16 16:35:42

Since Owen Jones is a Corbynista, no wonder some on here consider him a guru!He would come over better if he didn't look and sound like a Fourteen year old.
Exactly Petra
Hardly worth commenting on anything on this thread though.

petra Fri 03-Jun-16 16:35:46

dj Perhaps they have heard that we are shutting down all the illegal universities. If they have, that can only be a good thing.

rosesarered Fri 03-Jun-16 16:38:03

If the country does vote to leave...this thread could run and run.

rosesarered Fri 03-Jun-16 16:39:13

Yes, all the 'universities' that were a room over a shop in Manchester have hopefully gone now.
