We did expect lots of migrants from Arab states but I think the huge numbers still surprised the Goverments. It is a world problem really but unfortunately Europe is easier to get to overland and a reasonably short sea crossing. Many of the people may never gave left their immediate environs before and therefore had little perception of the distances involved. Many of them believed Europe would welcome them and are still believing they will all get good jobs! I am in contact with a woman who actually goes to the camps in Calais and Dunkirk and sees thing first hand and talks to the people there.
Of course these camps won't really be needed anymore if we do vote out as France has said they will no longer need to help UK out by having the borders their side of the Channel. As it happens they have been relocating people - forcibly in some cases - to camps in other regions of France to take some of the pressure away from the northern coastal towns.

What to do about immigration, that seems to be bothering people but there are no answers forthcoming.
The only solution seems to me to be completely trash the UK economy and push us into a slump. Then the demand for migrant labour will dry up and the EU and other migrants will go home. It happened in Ireland recently. Economy in a dreadful state and there was a mass return to Poland, Latvia etc.
How about another banking crisis, while we are still up to our necks in debt from the last one? That might trash our tottering economy.
Ah no - there is a simple solution at hand. Vote to leave the UK. That will damage the economy for sure, as all those super-bright economists agree and the downturn might carry on turning down for years and then those pesky immigrants will go back from whence they came. And we won't even have money to pay for the foreign born staff that keep the NHS going (1 in 5 doctors from the EU just for a start)

People working in Govt/council jobs in Ireland have actually taken three salary cuts - A further cut was on the cards but it caused so much unrest it was abandoned. We have a relative it happened to - and they pay very high medical fees.

Not joining the Euro was one of the points they agreed last Feb - along with no joining Schengen etc.

Does it matter, what political Party a member of Gransnet is?It certainly has nothing to do with the great EU debate, and there are members of EVERY party leaning either this way or another.Just because Cameron is for staying in, doesn't mean all Conservatives are following his lead, and just because Corbyn has ( albeit reluctantly)
given his support to staying in, doesn't mean all Labour voters will vote that way either. Far from it.
