.... almost want the other side to win, simply because the follow up to the result would be so much more interesting? Yes, I know that is completely irresponsible. hmm

@Wilma

Maybe, but I would say that the relationship with Ireland is now quite weak. People probably still come on the ferry from Dublin, but they don't stay in Liverpool. I actually know more Irish where I live now than I ever did when I lived on Merseyside.

What are the money markets doing and things like ftses?

POGS Fri 24-Jun-16 03:15:12

DD
Because they are fed up with not being listened to.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 03:15:11

@obieone

War stuff? Well, sorry. I'm not very interested in battles and the logistics of war. I'm interested in social history and attitudes. The 1930s is still a topic of hot debate. If you really want me to bore the pants off you, I'll lecture you about pre-1830s English poor laws and social attitudes to the poor grin.

This will keep the academics happy for years trying to make sense of it.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 03:13:00

That's Cameron gone. And by default Osborne. Who next?

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 03:12:43

daphne commentators are saying Liverpool result is connected to Ireland relationship.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 03:11:25

It far too early to call, but overall Remain is underperforming.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 03:10:53

I really have given up trying to understand the results. Liverpool and the North West has voted Remain. The North East has voted Leave. Both have high rates of deprivation and a defunct ship building industry. Why have they voted differently?

obieone Fri 24-Jun-16 03:09:46

Not sure Leave have won just yet though. London seems strong remain.

obieone Fri 24-Jun-16 03:08:57

Ah, it was dd that talked to me about war stuff about a week ago.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 03:08:12

A big Remain just in for Westminster.

obieone Fri 24-Jun-16 03:08:06

Ah, this is where you all are!

That is why putting things about "experts" just doesn't cut ice.

Gransnet is much like mumsnet, in that it is fairly wealthy. Gransnet is not representative of the country as regards wealth and education.
And most certainly not representative of left wing voters!

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 03:06:30

I know - if the economy does go pear shaped then I think we are in for a very rocky time. Every bit of me is hoping all the predictions are wrong.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 03:03:45

@ ww

I agree and I'm not confident that the Labour Party has the ability to hold them to account.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 03:02:35

I hate to say this, ww, because there's been too much talk of Nazis during this referendum, but I did on OU history module on 1930s Germany. There's been quite a bit of research on the voting patterns before 1933 and this is scarily similar. I don't think we're going to have a Hitler or a holocaust, but we're going to have an economy in the sh*t unless there's some drastic boost (and it won't come from trading with Albania and Serbia haha!) and a complete reversal of social attitudes.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 03:01:03

Just supposing remain win - I know it is looking highly unlikely. But if they do the government just has to listen to the electorate. The difficulty is to decide how much the vote is anti eu or anti government

POGS Fri 24-Jun-16 03:00:13

I forgot Newcastle.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 02:58:59

A lot of the traditional Labour areas voting Leave are former mining areas.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 02:57:31

No Newcastle was the first.

POGS Fri 24-Jun-16 02:55:25

Is Liverpool the first northern result for remain?

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 02:54:57

So can we say what seems to be happening is that the working class are going to decide this vote. The political class is predominantly remain, the academic class is predominantly remain, the business class is predominantly remain,
What is going on?

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 02:51:43

My area has just voted Leave (50.7% Leave/49.3% Remain). This is a wealthy area with few immigrants and unemployment below 1%. Educational qualifications are higher than average. I don't think it's ever voted anything but Conservative in a general election. It is quite an 'old' area, because young people can't afford to live here and many leave home to go to university.

I don't really understand the mentality. I have spoken to two Leave voters this week. Neither really had a clue how the EU affects them, but both run small businesses and hope to do away with 'red tape' (ie. they're pi$$ed off at having to pay sick and maternity pay, etc).

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 02:48:18

So many traditionally working class areas in England have voted Leave. It's much worse than I expected. Most of the big volume results aren't in yet though. I don't think anyone expected the results we've seen. MPs must be having kittens (being polite here).
