All over fb there are people calling anyone who voted Leave 'thick', 'uneducated' etc.

Do we not live in a democracy? Shouldn't we accept that more than 50% of the population want to leave the EU. I don't suppose that the same people would have been called names had they voted the other way.

nigglynellie Fri 24-Jun-16 11:20:06

What I said Joelsnan was tongue in cheek as I would have thought was obvious! I did go on to say that perhaps it would be better to listen to peoples concerns, even racist ones, whatever your own feelings are, sooner than dismiss the same people with arrogance and destain.

Jalima Fri 24-Jun-16 11:56:14

Icyalittle so who was that professor on BBC last night who kept reiterating that older people (pensioners) were most likely to vote Remain - the professor who couldn't work out a percentage (Laura K had to do it for him)

Well, the peasants may be revolting (I did understand it was tongue in cheek nn) but they will now be relying on the despised politicians and elite to forge the way forward hmm

Hope said professor is not involved!

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 11:56:32

What's the point in sniping at each other? It won't change the result. It is what it is. We need to turn our attention to Parliament and make sure what happens next is best for the UK.

The government's job is to bring the country together again. The opposition parties need to get themselves organised and form an effective opposition to the government. Parliament must look inward and outward and act in our best interests.

The turnout was higher than for a general election, but one in three of those eligible to vote did not vote. So the majority of people eligible to vote did not vote to leave the EU. Why did so many people not vote? The politicians have had a very loud wake up call and now more than ever need to get their act together.

Joelsnan Fri 24-Jun-16 12:08:15

Icyaliitle YouGov poll predicted a substantial Remain vote. I cannot see how they can accurately predict the voting age demographic when there is no means of verifying this other than canvassing a small pool of voters who would be engaged enough to respond. Trying to forge wedges between the generations is false reasoning.

Joelsnan Fri 24-Jun-16 12:10:33

Nigglynellie apologies if I misunderstood your intent smile

Nonnie1 Fri 24-Jun-16 12:22:20

Nobody has won anything. This was never a competition.

Elegran Fri 24-Jun-16 12:44:47

Four times in a week I was phoned by polling surveys. Four times I told them I was not commenting on how I would vote. So I am not in their statistics for over-70s. That is why I never believe pre-vote polls - they can only count those who are happy to give them information.

Nonnie1 Fri 24-Jun-16 12:46:49

And.. better to have made a vote than not.

Lord I am being wise today

ninathenana Fri 24-Jun-16 12:51:34

Willma my son's excuse for not voting was he couldn't make up his mind

POGS Fri 24-Jun-16 12:51:38

Kitty

Your OP shows you are ' Ever the Optimist' obviously. sad

nigglynellie Fri 24-Jun-16 12:56:29

That's ok J'snan! I appreciate that my comment was a bit outlandish!!!

annodomini Fri 24-Jun-16 13:34:10

Only one thing makes me smile today: Farrage and his cohort of MEPs will lose their totally undeserved salaries and expenses. sunshine

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 24-Jun-16 13:47:46

nina what did you say to him when he told you? I think there's many reasons why people don't vote and these should be investigated (I'm not not just referring to the referendum).

Nonnie1 Fri 24-Jun-16 13:52:23

On holiday last year in Tenerife I was speaking to a local who was attempting to get me on a jet ski (the utter fool).

I asked him if I looked like I would go on one? He laughed at me but then we fell into a conversation about people from the UK, and he said we were regarded as a pushover in Europe.

'Anyone can go there and get benefits and them come here on holiday' he said. His words stung.

I do believe the rest of Europe is shocked that we actually got the backbone to say 'Enough'.

kittylester Fri 24-Jun-16 13:52:27

GG, but that is how a democracy works.

Elegran, GA, that's was what I was trying to say. Thank you

trisher Fri 24-Jun-16 13:59:10

More than 50% of the UK population have not voted to leave, only 51% of those who voted. They may not be 'thick' or 'uneducated' but they have been conned, even Farage now admits there won't be 350 mill for the NHS.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 14:02:18

This one doesn't seem to be the brightest:

www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/eu-referendum-man_uk_576cf8e4e4b08d2c5638ee29?k8b1k6wvy7evzpvi

Exactly, trisher!

And Boris has said he doesn't mind immigrants. They're all squirming.

Boris tried to reassure people that there's no need to rush. The EU has told the UK to stop mucking about and just get on with it.

rosesarered Fri 24-Jun-16 14:54:32

I don't know Kitty ......people cannot accept democracy can they? It's always ' the other view is wrong' we wuz robbed, we should have won! Etc etc.
It has to be accepted because it has happened, and if you voted Remain, you don't have to like it ( why would you?) but you do have to accept that people have voted for Leave.Far too many insults still flying around I see, on here as well as elsewhere.

Ana Fri 24-Jun-16 15:06:38

Yes, exactly like there were after the GE. Some people will never tire of telling us how Brexiters have been brainwashed, are deluded bigots and really not fit to live among those who really know what's good for the country. Talk about sour grapes...

Jalima Fri 24-Jun-16 15:11:44

Icyalittle
Joelsnan is quite correct - the poll could be wildly inaccurate, as was its prediction that Remain would win.

It depends where the poll was taken - different areas of the country varied wildly and I think that is more interesting than looking at age groups.

According to that Professor on the BBC, the older generation of pensioners were predicted to vote to remain.

petra Fri 24-Jun-16 15:17:35

Thanks for the laugh Ana As I'm one of the deluded bigots who isn't fit to live amongst those who know better, I do my best to travel around Europe as much as I can ( and spread the wealth) so that I don't get under anyone's feet. Doffs cap walking backwards out of the room.

Ana Fri 24-Jun-16 15:21:10

grin

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 24-Jun-16 16:01:35

joelsnan no chance of having influence now. And yes, in all probability Europe will begin to break up. Is that really a good thing. Think back to events in our early years (well, mine anyway)

We have missed a great opportunity to bring about reform in the EU. This referendum would have been enough to get them thinking. Too late for that now.

Jane10 Fri 24-Jun-16 16:42:12

Good luck travelling round Europe now petra. How popular you will be. (Irony alert btw)

petra Fri 24-Jun-16 16:50:04

Jane10 You spent enough money, everyone loves you. Some years ago we asked a French family: why do you love the Germans so much? They said: because they spend a lot of money in our country, unlike you Brits.
