Farage is standing down as leader of UKIP

daphnedill Wed 06-Jul-16 07:35:01

It was on LBC.

This is what he said:

Farage: I am disgusted at the way May has been speaking. The EU nationals living in the UK came here legally and they have protected rights.

bags the word "experts" does not equate to "polymaths".
There is a great deal more knowledge and complication in the world these days and experts have to specialise as we no longer live in the days of Leonardo da Vinci. Or even in the mid 19th century when someone could have quite quickly studied the entire sum of scientific knowledge and moved on to another field.
Thus, in there referendum campaign we had experts on economics from around the world saying that it was a bad idea to leave the EU. Also experts from the world of health care saying it would harm the NHS. Experts from the scientific world saying it would harm UK science. All the university chancellors (each of them with their individual expertise no doubt, but all of them with expertise in higher education) saying it would be a huge mistake. And so on. We also had the UK Statistic Authority (independent experts) saying quite clearly that some of the claims of the campaign were based on little evidence. The most notorious is, and probably always will be, the £350 on the NHS.

On the subect of the £350,000, which Leave campaigners denied they promised, I just found this:

Gisela Stuart, Vote Leave Chair, said:
'The NHS is already struggling to cope with a lack of funding and huge demand. Rather than sending money abroad to countries that want to join the EU I believe we should be spending our money on our priorities here in the UK.
'Instead of giving an extra 88 million people - more than our entire population - access to the NHS I believe it would be safer to take back control. We should give our struggling NHS the £350 million we send to the EU every week.'

That seems pretty clear to me.

Yes, I know all that, jess. What you don't seem to have noticed is that experts also spoke in support of Brexit. It wasn't all one sided.

thatbags Wed 06-Jul-16 08:35:52

Thanks for the actual quote, dd. Shows how you can misfudge misjudge a person, huh?

Some people have argued all along that Farage isn't a racist. It's possible that they have a point. He certainly isn't like an EDL type.

thatbags Wed 06-Jul-16 08:36:49

And also, jess, as the tweet I quoted was at pains to point out, some experts talk bullshit.

Welshwife Wed 06-Jul-16 08:37:41

This has just popped up!

thatbags Wed 06-Jul-16 08:38:36

In short, the argument from authority doesn't necessarily have any useful weight.

thatbags Wed 06-Jul-16 08:41:11

Even if they had had a plan, welshwife, they were not in a position to carry it through. Only the government can do that and the government, which is supposed to have contingency plans for stuff like this, didn't have a plan either. The government is squarely in the blame here, not the Brexit campaigners. Cameron is the one who has let Remainers down by his hastiness and lack of forward planning.

thatbags Wed 06-Jul-16 08:42:06

Cameron copped out.

Welshwife Wed 06-Jul-16 09:36:48

grin

daphnedill Wed 06-Jul-16 09:38:46

So if there was/is no plan, what the heck were Leavers voting for?

Tegan Wed 06-Jul-16 09:56:57

Silly woman; to take back control of course.....

Lilyflower Wed 06-Jul-16 10:52:18

thatbags, yet again you have expressed just what I think too.

Don't 'approve' of Farage (blokey man with pint and antedeluvian views) but see nothing wrong in his party manifesto views and he can't be 'racist' as he is married to someone from elsewhere.

I also thought his cheery, sensible, optimistic and down to eart interviews in the run up to the referendum a breath of fresh air. He kept unexpectedly flooring the opposition with sheer common sense. That the BBC couldn't pin anything negative on him was obviously tying them into knots!

daphnedill Wed 06-Jul-16 10:59:12

You can carry on listening to him on radio. He's got his own show as a presenter on LBC.

My impression of him is that he has a giant chip on his shoulder and he permanently wants to be seen as a victim. He seems like a schoolkid who gets punched on the nose and complains about being bullied because he's always winding people up and calling them names.

His championing of the 'man in the street' is a con. I find him odious. (Just my opinion.)

trisher Wed 06-Jul-16 11:14:10

If you work on the basis of being married to a foreigner means you aren't racist Donald Trump isn't racist either!!!??? Bit surreal isn't it!

Firecracker123 Wed 06-Jul-16 11:27:08

A few remainers on here have a giant chip on their shoulders in my opinion.

GillT57 Wed 06-Jul-16 11:45:02

No chip on my shoulder Firecracker. Just a great sadness that not only have a small majority of the electorate made a decision that will effect this country and the whole of Europe for generations, the decision has been made based on misleading information. Yes, I know we have all said this before, but it is too important to be dismissed as 'bad losership' or whatever. I can likely survive this, although I had hoped for more than just survival, but many will not survive it and will find their standard of living seriously reduced. Building firms stock has taken a plunge, and this is not about giving the bankers/establishment/bosses a bash on the nose, it is about carpenters, plasterers and plumbers losing their jobs. So think on, be pleased with the decision you made, but please do not patronise me by telling me to get over it or to suck it up ( disgusting expression by the way), and please dont tell me that Britain will be great again. I do not think it will.

Firecracker123 Wed 06-Jul-16 12:10:28

It's only been 2 weeks since the referendum for goodness sake, a new Prime Minister has to be chosen hopefully one who is 100% behind leaving the EU.

daphnedill Wed 06-Jul-16 12:19:04

Hopefully not! The choice is horrendous.

GillT57 Wed 06-Jul-16 12:41:03

Indeed Daphnedil and just for starters firecracker, the exchange trip that my DD is doing as part of her degree is now going to cost £250-300 more due to the drop in exchange rates. So, no, I will not get over it. I dont know your personal circumstances, but I wonder if you would feel as patriotic if it started hitting your pocket? As far as I am concerned, the only hope is to have a Pm who is on the Remain side in order to temper some of the more ludicrous statements being made by people like Andrea Leadstrom.

Anya Wed 06-Jul-16 12:47:10

I think more people did realise there would be a knock-on effect on our pockets and accepted that. It's not just about the £ in our pocket.

daphnedill Wed 06-Jul-16 13:03:53

That's fine, Anya, if you have money to spare (I really don't), but why should I pay for whatever else other people think is important?

Anya Wed 06-Jul-16 13:08:40

I'm not aware that being poor means you have to ditch your principles. In fact, from what I've witnessed and experienced in my 70 years is that it isn't the rich, or religious, who will stretch out a helping hand, it is often those with very little themselves.

Tegan Wed 06-Jul-16 14:11:43

I don't recall the leave campaign making a point of informing people that they would be worse off; I think that was labelled Project Fear.
