Traingate

The silliest thing about the Corbyn "Traingate" fiasco is that before the railways were privatised, I often had to sit on the floor toing and froing between Preston and Edinburgh. Sometimes there was no buffet car. And the toilets were often disgusting.

I guess Corbyn didn't travel by train much back then hmm

However, the trains I travelled on usually had more space for luggage than current Virgin trains.

We flew to Skipol last autumn from Bristol, as you can book in on line you only had to be at the airport half an hour before take off, yes we had to get to Bristol which is about half an hour from here as is the train station. The other end we caught the extremely efficient Dutch train to our destination. Whatever way you travel is not going to be good for the environment, but planes are much quicker than trains and take about half the time to get to wherever. Coaches are the cheapest, but do tend to go round the houses!!! Incidentally I love travelling on a train, particularly continental ones, but I would always book a seat!!!!

I'm talking daily commuter travel. Which is where the overcrowding hits hardest.

Jalima Fri 26-Aug-16 20:14:39

Why don't they put on extra coaches (train coaches I mean) - presumably the engines can pull a couple more?

thatbags Fri 26-Aug-16 20:23:43

New word on the block: Corbynastrophe

wink

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 26-Aug-16 20:31:44

What's it mean? #thick

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 26-Aug-16 20:32:31

From 'catastrophe'?

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 26-Aug-16 20:33:39

or this?

rosesarered Fri 26-Aug-16 20:40:33

Niggly I know what you mean about continental trains, Swiss railways are clean, on time, and fantastic scenery as well.smile

durhamjen Fri 26-Aug-16 20:42:16

There are a lot of people on here who do the same but I have refrained from saying so.
Are you saying they are all thick, jingl?
There are even people who misspell names all the time. That seems quite thick to me, especially when the correct spelling is pointed out to them.

durhamjen Fri 26-Aug-16 20:44:49

There's fantastic scenery going up to Edinburgh or Glasgow.
Unfortunately, the trains are crowded and expensive.
Are Swiss trains owned by the people, or by private companies that want to make a profit before anything else?

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 26-Aug-16 20:46:12

No!!! I meant I am thick for not understanding what Bags's new word means.

durhamjen Fri 26-Aug-16 20:47:39

Oh, jingl, sorry, I understand now.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 26-Aug-16 20:48:13

I went on an Austrian train the other day. The seats were hard. (made of plastic)

Nicer than ours though.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 26-Aug-16 20:49:42

Don't worry about it dj. I can't understand most of that post od yours anyway. smile

rosesarered Fri 26-Aug-16 20:50:52

djen.....I have no idea, but granjura may be along in a minute.

durhamjen Fri 26-Aug-16 21:01:04

Jingl, have you been watching the series about trains, full steam ahead, I think it's called?
One of the programmes shows the Elephant engine at Beamish. Passengers sit on hard wooden seats. Fortunately only for five minutes!

Tegan Fri 26-Aug-16 21:13:31

That's been a fabulous series, hasn't it. In fact, I'm going to rewatch it.

obieone Fri 26-Aug-16 21:13:39

If you are pootling around in rural parts or at ends of railway lines, fares can be quite cheap, or very cheap.

They seem to become much more wildly expensive at peak times, commuting routes and mainlines nearer London[dont know about other major cities].
Oh, and if not prebooked.

durhamjen Fri 26-Aug-16 21:25:56

I think we know that, obie.

Yes, I agree, Tegan.
I've recorded it for my grandson, and bought him the book and the map from the OU.
He's always been interested in trains and railways, although he does tend to flummox people when he says he prefers diesel to steam. It's something to do with the shape of their noses, which puzzles people even more. I understand, of course!

Anniebach Fri 26-Aug-16 21:30:46

I didn't know that Obieone, haven't travelled by train for years. To me the concern seems to be for London again

nigglynellie Fri 26-Aug-16 21:39:59

That's why dj, most sensible people embarking on a long train jouney book a seat in advance!!! grin

durhamjen Fri 26-Aug-16 21:40:35

Don't you pootle around in rural parts, Annie?

durhamjen Fri 26-Aug-16 21:47:28

What, niggly, so they don't get a hard seat?

Anniebach Fri 26-Aug-16 21:51:53

Catch a bus for 20 miles to get to a station Jen ? No. We are very dependant on cars here

durhamjen Fri 26-Aug-16 22:48:25

So obie was wrong, then. You can't pootle around at the end of a line?
In fact lots of lines were closed, so nobody could pootle around.
My nearest station is six miles away, and it would cost me to park, then £5 to go from there to Durham or Newcastle, and the same to get back.
So obie was wrong about it being cheap.
She was right about it being wildly expensive at peak times, commuting routes and near London, and that's what you know as well as the rest of us.
