Traingate

The silliest thing about the Corbyn "Traingate" fiasco is that before the railways were privatised, I often had to sit on the floor toing and froing between Preston and Edinburgh. Sometimes there was no buffet car. And the toilets were often disgusting.

I guess Corbyn didn't travel by train much back then hmm

However, the trains I travelled on usually had more space for luggage than current Virgin trains.

durhamjen Wed 24-Aug-16 10:50:12

On the local radio this morning there was an hour about the trains.
One man said that he and 29 of his friends booked tickets on a Saturday morning to go from Newcastle to Leeds. 6 had seats reserved in coach E, the rest in coach F.
When the train came in, there was no coach F.

It's a long time since I travelled from King's Cross to anywhere, but I did notice that all the CCTV footage was supposed to be taken from the same camera. It was from the food bar into the next carriage.
Many people booking seats in that carriage would have left coats and bags on seats and gone into the foodbar, wouldn't they? Isn't that what Corbyn said?

I don't laugh at Johnson, I'm terrified of him. He describes black people as "pickaninnies" with "water melon smiles" then he mocks Obama's Kenyan heritage, plus he was fired from previous jobs for lying. We shouldn't laugh at Johnson, we should be keeping him from power and holding him to account. But no, lets laugh at his silly hair, call him Boris and make him foreign secretary.

Tegan Wed 24-Aug-16 10:58:26

Probably because there's something humourless about Corbyn. People say that he was funny on The Last Leg but he made that awful comment about only being @ 7% in favour of Remain, something I can't forgive him for.

obieone Wed 24-Aug-16 10:59:04

Does this all mean that Owen Smith might win now?

Pollengran Wed 24-Aug-16 10:59:54

You are nitpicking Anniebach. Your hatred of Corbyn worries me if you describe yourself as a Labour supporter. Why do you relish all the MSM propaganda against him?

As I said, if he has let his supporters down over this, and it is proven beyond doubt then I will walk away.

I am not part of Momentum, this is a made up word for people who want to see long overdue changes in the Labour Party.

whitewave Wed 24-Aug-16 11:08:00

No - my bet is that Corbyn will win with a bigger majority. There is nothing attractive about Smith.

What nobody seems to be getting is that people are looking for an alternative to the rubbish politicians we have been landed with for so long, whose policies are ensuring greater inequality, greater unfairness, and the sense that the poorer members are simply being ignored.

That is what is attracting so much of the working class vote to Trump - likewise in so many countries in Europe.

Politicians are not listening. Their rhetoric is beginning to recognise this fact, but so far their actions do not reflect the truth.

Anya Wed 24-Aug-16 11:10:50

People don't leave coats etc on booked seats to go to the foodbar or toilet when trains are pulling into or pulling out of stations. I travel by rail a great deal. You avoid going at that time just because that is when people are leaving the train and others getting on and you stand the chance of coming back to find you have to oust someone from your seat.

I'm afraid this was a case of all aboard the Hogwash Express.

This particular line was taken back into public ownership in 2009 and run by Directly Operated Railways, a company owned but the Department for Transport and only re-privatised in 2015. It's not actually a service that's notoriously overcrowded. Jeremy could have found a far better example to make his point.

Gracesgran Wed 24-Aug-16 11:13:44

Oh dear, Tegan. I have said it before and will no doubt say it again, attacking someone's sense of humour is the last stand of a bully. I expect he just doesn't share yours.

Was the @ a typo - if not you are wrong.

... and another obieism. Does what mean Owen Smith might win Obie?

Anya Wed 24-Aug-16 11:18:14

and another obieism hmm

What's that supposed to mean? She didn't do it you know sad

Gracesgran Wed 24-Aug-16 11:19:27

What nobody seems to be getting is that people are looking for an alternative to the rubbish politicians we have been landed with for so long, whose policies are ensuring greater inequality, greater unfairness, and the sense that the poorer members are simply being ignored.

You are so right whitewave.

Anniebach Wed 24-Aug-16 11:35:52

And your claim I started a pro Blair thread Pollrgrsn? I am not nit picking, I am objecting to a lie

I do not hate, hsve nevery known hate , I do know anger . I do not have to respect Corbyn to be a member of the Labour Party and again you are so wrong to say Momentum is a made up word, it is a far left political movement

Elegran Wed 24-Aug-16 11:37:30

I wonder why it is that ALL threads that have the least mention of a politician in them deteriorate into party mudslinging interspersed with grumpiness about how we are not taking things solemnly "seriously" enough? "News and politics" is a wide umbrella of subjects, but even posts under other topics than these attract the same posters wielding the same partisan hatchets.

And could the advocates of total devotion to solemn po-face-ity please bear in mind that cracking jokes in the tumbril on the way to the guillotine, or singing and dancing as they stand below the gallows tree is another good old tradition?

Elegran Wed 24-Aug-16 11:41:30

They have a website www.peoplesmomentum.com/ and on the first page are two big red links - one says "Join Momentum" the other says "Join the labour party" The links are of equal size (large), and the Momentum one is first. That sounds to me very like a political movement, not a made-up name.

Anniebach Wed 24-Aug-16 11:41:51

Wonder how many people go straight to the food bar as soon as they get on the train

Corbyn said this morning there were no seats for him and his team, surely a group travelling together to an organised event and wanting to sit together to discuss the event would have thought of booking seats in advance , they can arrange rallies in the O2 and around the country but not a train journey

thatbags Wed 24-Aug-16 11:46:53

We're allowed to mock and laugh at politicians of any persuasion, whether we agree or disagree with their politics. It's one of the most important things about democracy, the ability to piss-take in total freedom.

Elegran Wed 24-Aug-16 11:50:01

It seems some posters believe criticism and ridicule are only allowed if it is of politicians that they personally disapprove of. Their favourites are sacrosanct.

thatbags Wed 24-Aug-16 11:51:54

Yes. Quite. In short, they want censorship of anything they don't like or that opposes their holy point of view. Well, that idea can piss off as far as I'm concerned.

Anniebach Wed 24-Aug-16 12:00:49

Not for me Elegran, but I accept politicians are human beings , not perfect . I so admire and respect Brown but have no problem in saying he can't do tv. I think Blair's government did much good but I was against the Iraq war. I defended Corbyn for inviting democratically elected Sin Fein politicians to Westminster , I criticise him for supporting militants and failing the party during the Brexit campaign

Tegan Wed 24-Aug-16 12:27:22

One of the biggest problems I find are people who don't ever criticise their chosen political party, no matter what they do. The Labour Party has always been more likely to be critical of party members and their policies than the Conservatives so I'm surprised at the fact that corbyn is so much 'above/beyond reproach'. I'm very puzzled by it.

Anniebach Wed 24-Aug-16 12:39:43

Baffling Tegan, cannot be claimed he is an honest politician , the Labour Party is against austerity, perhaps he had some strange appeal we can't see

Anyway, he changed his story this morning, he wanted two seats together , most odd, I didn't see his wife sitting next to him on the floor but he chose the floor because he couldn't find a seat where He could sit next to his wife . Then he is given seats for his wife, himself and his team .

Ana Wed 24-Aug-16 12:52:32

Due to the the staff apparently giving some other passengers the upgrade to first class that Corbyn had of course refused! Weren't there any other people sitting on the floor that he should have made sure were seated before him...?

Anniebach Wed 24-Aug-16 13:04:19

There was allegedly a mother with two children , it was said on the news yesterday two people were upgraded , no matter how many, he is so against upgrading but has no problem with taking empty seats when other passengers were upgraded

I think it amusing he mocked Branson from taking a break from his holiday to respond to the allegations whilst he left his party to get on with the Brexit fight and took a holiday

Gracesgran Wed 24-Aug-16 13:30:49

Do you know that he didn't Ana?

durhamjen Wed 24-Aug-16 13:44:01

Annie, you are getting more and more ridiculous.
It was a family upgraded to first class, not a couple. Perhaps you ought to read more carefully.
Can't imagine what you would say if he'd sat on the floor all the way to Newcastle.
There was a man on the radio this morning who said there were lots of seats on the train - after many had got off at York.
By that time, the staff had sorted out the seating.

Anya, when the line was taken back into public ownership, it made a profit. That's why Branson wanted to buy it back. We, the taxpayers, subsidise Branson's lifestyle.

Anniebach Wed 24-Aug-16 13:44:44

How many were in the family who were upgraded, they made room for Corbyn, wife, his team and three others onbthecfloor?
