Very interesting article about T May. Forgive me if it's been posted before.

I think that the author is proposing that the Murdoch media have been superseded by the Daily Mail in setting the agenda for 'British' and that Theresa May is a product and perpetrator of its agenda.

The Daily Mail takes power
Anthony Barnett 5 October 2016

After 25 years in politics Theresa May has no obvious connections to any think tank. She shows no interest in ideas. Asked by Conservative Home in a Quick Quiz session to choose between Burke’s “Reflections on the Revolution in France” or Louise Bagshawe’s “Desire”, she replied, “I wouldn’t read either of them, sorry.” The prime minister who faces arguably the Kingdom’s deepest constitutional predicament since George III was driven from the Cabinet by the loss of the American colonies dismissed out of hand the idea that she might ever turn to the pages of Burke, even though as a student she had chaired a society named after him.

As the country faces an unprecedented concatenation of economic, strategic, diplomatic and constitutional uncertainty, the woman at the helm seems devoid of intellectual resources. The one decision she has definitely taken is to give the go ahead to Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, a boondoggle incapable of justification by any criteria of integrity. The Pharaohs built their own pyramids, Theodoric built his own mausoleum. But these were designed as monuments to generate the admiration of posterity. Surely only an idiot would make their first decision the go-ahead for a colossal radioactive tombstone to her regime.

But Theresa May should not be dismissed as an idiot. There is a striking and potentially formidable coherence to the general direction she has set for her new government, evidenced by the self-confidence of her ministers who remarkably quickly are singing from the same song-sheet. She does seem to have a clear ideology refreshingly different from her predecessors. Where has it come from?

The answer is The Daily Mail. On Sunday in her first speech to her party as its leader, she set out her view of Brexit and announced that she intends to trigger Article 50 to start the UK’s withdrawal from the EU before March. This was a moment of upmost gravity, to recognise and measure the immense divisions that have been opened up within the country, and consider the implications for the entire continent that Britain once helped liberate from fascism. Instead, her tone, brevity and apparent practicality were drawn as if directly from a Daily Mail editorial.

Intelligent comments section, too.

I hardly think that Mair is worried by Gransnet chat......but we all have real lives and many post on Facebook/ Twitter etc and it all adds up to a general gloomy outlook.
Yes, joining the EU had many positives back then and for quite a few years, but the EU was much smaller , in the days before it hoovered up loads of countries and became a huge bloated organisation, had it stayed as it was, there would no doubt have been no need for this referendum.

Mair Wed 25-Jan-17 11:49:25

And far more dangerous, roses, is irresponsible comments by media journalists, people like the hate filled self publicist James OBrien whose career depends on being controversial, as well ass of course actual economists who are as biased as anyone else

rosesarered Wed 25-Jan-17 11:55:59

The media in all it's forms is a very powerful tool, much more so today than at any time in history.

Mair Wed 25-Jan-17 12:07:02

More division then. Pound crashes -its those pesky remainers fault, Footsie dives - its those pesky remainers fault, immigration rises its those pesky remainers fault.

Leave behind this language of division, and try to work as a team

Its the 'Bremoaner' extremists making that impossible with their inability to accecpt the referensum result and dmigration of Brexiters.
They need to :
Stop suggesting Brexit voters were either 'fools' or 'fooled'.
Stop calling for second referendums
Stop trying to derail Brexit.
Stop talking down Britain and the economy.
Stop prioritising the needs of EU immigrants over British migrants in the EU with this ridiculous call for one sided guarantees.

Accept you lost, and accept you need to work out your priorities and what your side can realistically expect Brexiters may be willing to compromise on.

Mair Wed 25-Jan-17 12:08:20

"to accecpt the referensum result and dmigration of Brexiters"

Correction
to accept the referendum result and denigration of Brexiters.

Actually James O'Brian is anything but how you describe him. He is also sometimes the presenter of Newsnight. He asks pertinent questions and is I admit a bit like a terrier when he does not get an actual answer.
If you are looking to find people who really are hate filled then look at a few of the Facebook groups of Brexiteers - there you will find real hate.

Ana Wed 25-Jan-17 12:11:59

Are you saying there are no 'hate filled' Facebook groups of Remainers, Welshwife?

Mair Wed 25-Jan-17 12:14:49

He is also sometimes the presenter of Newsnight
A sad reflection on the BBC, that they have abandoned politcal neutrality by ever allowing so unrestraindly biased a presenter to anchor their prime news discussion program.

He asks pertinent questions and is I admit a bit like a terrier when he does not get an actual answer
He shouts people down, hurls insults, targets less educated weaker callers for pillorying and cuts off strong well informed opponents. He also abuses his ability to cut off to have the last word.

The U.K. Migrants in the EU actually would be very happy to see the EU migrants getting told they have the right to stay in UK - particularly those married to a British spouse and with children who have UK passports. They have now started supporting each other. There are no dreadful stories of Uk migrants being told to start making arrangements to leave the EU country after years of paying NI and taxes and buying houses etc.
Luckily the UK migrants have a number of MEPs and ministers from other EU countries standing up and saying how the 48% must not be forgotten in any negotiations. That is more than the Govt of the 48% have done.
Apart from that the Remoaners have only been active for 6 months - they have another 39+ years to go to be equal to the moaning period of the Brexiteers.

Welshwife Wed 25-Jan-17 12:18:41

I see posts from several Remaining Facebook groups and I have seen no really hateful posts - in fact the large groups will not allow it and remove the person! The Brexiteers groups do not seem to do that but encourage it.

daphnedill Wed 25-Jan-17 12:19:45

I agree with you about James O'Brien, Welshwife. He's no fool and, ironically, used to be an editor at the Daily Express. He's a real journalist rather than a chat show presenter wanting to stroke guests' egos.

I also agree with you about Facebook and the trolls who appear on mainstream newspapers' comments sections. The Indie is one of the worst. They come out in packs.

Mair Wed 25-Jan-17 12:22:29

Welshwife
Theresa May is the one who has suggested making a quick agreement to secure the future of both parties but the EU has refused, although some leaders (from the East I suspect where the migration is very inbalanced to their advantage).

Youree giving a very wrong impression to imply Britain is causing problems.

Mair Wed 25-Jan-17 12:23:24

Oops add on first para:

...would like to do so.

Welshwife Wed 25-Jan-17 12:40:55

Naturally when he is presenting Newsnight he does not only talk about Brexit. The other presenters of many BBC programmes can hardly be called non biased - indeed Laura kuenssberg was found guilty of cutting film of Jeremy Corbyn and altering the flavour of the report this week.

Welshwife Wed 25-Jan-17 12:45:37

Have you read any of the reports from EU long term residents of UK - they need to fill in an 85 page questionnaire to start with and some of them were granted leave to remain permanently in UK years ago but given no paperwork as the Govt told them at the time it was not necessary with UK's EU membership.

JessM Wed 25-Jan-17 16:52:38

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-38305414
I'm with the Lords committee on this one. The EU residents in the UK were not allowed to vote in the referendum. May should be magnanimous and thus gain a small foothold on the moral high ground by granting all those resident last June to remain here permanently with full rights. Goodness knows she needs a few ways to mollify her EU colleagues for this mess.

whitewave Wed 25-Jan-17 16:57:28

jess yes

Mair Wed 25-Jan-17 17:36:02

LOL good job Jess is not on our negotiating team , the tough EU negotiators would have her stitched up before it even gets started!

They've already made it clear its hard ball. The BRitish team will have to fight for British interests not seek to mollify! Now who made a big error doing that last century?

whitewave Wed 25-Jan-17 17:43:21

Yes he underestimated the extreme right wing, he trusted in their integrity and honesty. That won't happen again.

Welshwife Wed 25-Jan-17 18:02:56

If the EU follows the rules as set out at the moment - the other 27 countries will all have a member on the committee deciding the terms of the U.K. exit and the U.K. will be told what the deal is - there will be no negotiating.
It might do the UK good to give something and maybe then get something back rather than do as this Govt are doing at the moment which is continually putting everyone's back up!

Mair Wed 25-Jan-17 18:03:38

It would certainly be foolish to trust the "integrity and honesty" of the EU!

These people will negotiate hard and act in their own interests, as must we.

"We'll make your lives a misery". Juncker
"There can be dmocratic choice against EU treaties". Juncker
"We need to build a United States of Europe with the Commission as government and two chambers – the European Parliament and a "Senate" of Member States," Viviane Reding
"Britons are too ignorant about Europe to vote in a referendum."
Reding again

Mair Wed 25-Jan-17 18:09:25

"It might do the UK good to give something and maybe then get something back"

What will do the UK good is to offer something in return for something back!

We've got the EU over a barrel on migrants when we have so many more here than ours over there. Of course they must be used as bargaining chips.

It would be crazy for May to pay any heed to 'Bremoaners' who would like nothing more than for Britain to give away its bargaining chips!

durhamjen Wed 25-Jan-17 18:26:52

That's my daughters-in-law you are talking about so nastily, Mair, and my grandchildren.

Obviously you do not have anything so disgusting as an EU citizen in your family. Probably couldn't bear to touch one.

whitewave Wed 25-Jan-17 18:29:02

Politics of division dj its horrible isn't it?

durhamjen Wed 25-Jan-17 18:35:36

Some people just don't see the irony, do they, whitewave?
