Trump. How could all those people vote for him?
Ochone ochone (Gaelic lamentation)

durhamjen Thu 10-Nov-16 19:48:57

But you said that the voters voted for him because they wanted to get rid of smug, self-satisfied people.
They didn't, did they?

Jalima Thu 10-Nov-16 19:56:22

Nothing at all like Theresa May djen - she now has to backtrack on some of the things she has said about him and be diplomatic.

The percentages you gave were rather simplistic as the demographic vote reveals:

www.nytimes.com/2016/12/01/us/politics/white-women-helped-elect-donald-trump.html?_r=0

The data indicate how deeply divided Americans are by race and gender: 94 percent of black women who voted and 68 percent of Hispanic or Latino female voters chose Hillary Clinton, but 53 percent of all white female voters picked Mr. Trump.

The data can be broken down further: 51 percent of white women with college degrees voted for Mrs. Clinton, while 62 percent of women without one voted for Mr. Trump, a reflection of his success with working-class whites.

I have seen a couple of reports saying how the Democrats simply chose the wrong candidate - the Clintons have too much history with bad headlines and doubts hanging over them - whether they are all true or not it still was a doubt. It is thought that had they chosen Bernie Sanders they would have been in power still. I believe he is a respected politician.

Trying to compare May with Trump is ludicrous djen as she is an intelligent woman who has been in politics a long time.Just because you don't like her is no reason to make such daft comments.

Ceesnan Thu 10-Nov-16 20:12:04

Are you privy to Theresa May's inner circle, durhamjen, that you can say with such authority that she has no ideas?

Anniebach Thu 10-Nov-16 20:30:05

Emily Thornberry said there were similarities between Trump and Corbyn !

rosesarered Thu 10-Nov-16 20:32:52

What! Also....what?grin

durhamjen Thu 10-Nov-16 20:32:59

My simplistic figures, jalima, came from the i, which got them from www.realclearpolitics.com
How are the New York Times ones any more realistic?
They are not. You will find they are the same.
To say 94% of black women voted for Clinton, when only 12% of the voting population are African American is no more meaningful than saying that 88% of all African Americans voted for her, unless, of course, you want to be divisive.

Jalima Thu 10-Nov-16 20:35:15

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/11/10/the-rise-of-donald-trump-is-similar-to-appeal-of-jeremy-corbyn-s/
but in the picture below she looks as if she's saying
'Just Joking' grin

durhamjen Thu 10-Nov-16 20:38:45

I think both Theresa May and Trump are thinking, "What the hell have I done?", just as Tegan said.
That's not comparing the two.
Those of you who are sticking up for her have no more idea than I do what she is going to do, because she won't tell us.
At least Trump has told the whole world what he intends to do!

durhamjen Thu 10-Nov-16 20:42:49

She could be right, jalima.

“To give him his credit, I never thought I’d say this, but Donald Trump was talking about the importance of investing in jobs and infrastructure and in the economies across the country, not just the main cities, and that’s right.”

The difference is that Corbyn would do what he says.
She said that both of them were against the established political order. That's true.

Need to go and disinfect my fingers after typing that.

rosesarered Thu 10-Nov-16 20:46:29

The difference us.... that Corbyn will never be in a position to do what he says.

Jane10 Thu 10-Nov-16 20:47:39

Would Corbyn? How can you know the extent to which he'd practice what he preaches.

rosesarered Thu 10-Nov-16 20:48:40

Is 'sticking up for her' saying that she is intelligent and has been in politics for a long time? (Theresa May) it just happens to be fact ,that's all there is to it.

Jane10 Thu 10-Nov-16 20:56:38

Hear hear Rosesared! She seems like a grown up.

norose4 Thu 10-Nov-16 20:58:13

Isn't it time we all stopped wanting a blow by blow account of on going negotiations until they have been - well - negotiated ! That's the time to raise concerns etc! (ref Theresa May brexit etc) its like fighting a war and telling every one what your strategy is, Surley we don't believe that she wants to do detrimental deals for her / our own country! What would be the point of that? Uh apart from being well, pointless!

Jalima Thu 10-Nov-16 20:59:17

Need to go and disinfect my fingers after typing that.
lol

one to the left, one far to the right, perhaps they have met round the other side of the moon

Jalima Thu 10-Nov-16 21:00:23

I didn't mean they were simplistic, only that they were not broken down as far as some I have seen, and you didn't give a link earlier.

Ana Thu 10-Nov-16 21:01:36

There's so much playground language from certain quarters on here - 'sticking up for her', 'frightened', 'telling fibs' etc.

Honestly, thank goodness Theresa May is a sensible adult. Which seems to be more than can be said for Corbyn.

durhamjen Thu 10-Nov-16 21:08:30

Why is 'frightened' playground language?
I am sure the grown up, sensible Theresa May has used the word.

MaizieD Thu 10-Nov-16 22:17:38

Yet it was a majority of the poorer people who voted for Clinton...

Tegan Thu 10-Nov-16 23:22:22

Latest overheard conversation in the sauna; 'glad Trump has won; he knows about business having been bankrupt several times and also knows how to fiddle his taxes'. I pointed out that he talks about protecting jobs in the steel industry, but uses Chinese steel to build his hotels which makes him a two faced bigot. I then went and hid in a changing room #buti'mgettingbraver!
