I lived in Chelsea in the late 1970s. I was most definitely a worker. The house where I lived is the kind of house now being 'traded' by foreign investors.
However, it's not just London. This is an article from one of my local newspapers:
All the time property prices are rising, people will buy them and keep them empty, because they can make more money from capital appreciation than rent. Yes, they tend to be in affluent areas, but there are plenty of workers living in cramped conditions.
I agree with you, trish. Having worked in schools and with teachers for what seemed like an eternity, I could count on the pinkies of one hand how many real left-wingers I met. Change was forever being imposed from above (in the last decade or so, by the government) and teachers just got on with it. Unfortunately, some of the new, younger teachers only know about the 'teach by numbers' method.
That's appalling, but not surprising. The effects of their history of slavery are still very much there. In the South especially. Michelle Obama, without effort or pretense, is so much more of a lady than Mrs. Trump will ever be.
Like most people I have been wondering just who voted for DT and came to the conclusion there must be many racists in the USA. I feel that only a racist would vote a racist into power. Anyone who abhors fellow humans being abused surely did not vote for DT after all the bile he spewed in his campaign. Or am I being too simplistic?
Did the promise of jobs overide all common decency and respect for people of a different race, creed and culture? After all, all American families are the descendants of immigrants whether they went of their own accord or were forcibly taken as slaves.
I am glad this woman's vile comments about Michells Obama disgusts so many people that there has been a furious reaction. Sadly, if not handled carefully racial hatred will get out of hand with dire consequences.
How frightening it must be to be non-white in the US at the moment. We have some nasty people here too but I don't believe anybody working in a charitable organisation in this country would make such a vile comment - and be applauded for it by a senior public officer - at least I truly hope not.
I have read reports that, since Trump was elected, physical and verbal attacks on black and Hispanic people have increased considerably. I'm afraid I have come to the belief that the vast majority of people who voted for Trump are out and out racists.
I think it shows that perhaps we relaxed too soon after the racist, gender and equality arguments.
I think it was thought that the argument had been made and it would only be a matter of time before everyone behaved and believed in civilised behaviour regarding these subjects.
How wrong we were.
The persuasion and facts ( that unfashionable concept) must start at birth and definitely be part if the school curriculum.
Even after all these years of the Obama administration, America is in a terrible state in some areas. How frightening it must be to be non-white in the US at the moment Just look at all the shootings of black people by the police, before the election of Trump. The thought of it getting worse is terrifying.
People are worried about the drugs problem (sometimes started by an addiction to prescription drugs prescribed by irresponsible doctors) and drugs coming across the border from Mexico. White working class people out of jobs for whatever reason and using soup kitchens. Terrorist attacks on American soil
It is easy to see how Trump played on people's despondency and fears - but the despondency and fears were there before the election and the Democrats have failed to solve it.
Trump is not the answer - but a lot of Americans think he is. Clinton was not the answer either because she was too aloof from the ordinary lives of many Americans.
Millions are not living 'The American Dream' and it could turn into a nightmare for many.
Jalima - Kanye West thinks he's the Messiah, so President of US would be a massive step down for a man with an ego beyond compare. He's married to the an extremely substantial backside/bum/arse, call it what you will, it's an autonomous entity that's attached to a woman called Kim Kardashian.
Oh yes, have heard of her, she had some jewels stolen when she was there in the flat
See Terribull I am not totally head in the sand, I have heard of some celebs I even watched I'm a Celebrity the other night (probably only the second time) because the tv just happened to be on then I noticed they were walking the plank above Surfer's Paradise - I couldn't stop watching even though I am scared of heights and was terrified on their behalf.
