Well its been announced that Jeremy Corbyn is applying a three line whip to his MPs to make them support the triggering of article 50.

I admire Jeremy for this, it's an act of leadership, and it could save Labours bacon in the many Northern Brexit seats that they hold, so in that sense I am not entirely pleased because it will weaken UKIPs chances. It will also weaken Paul Nuttalls chances in Stoke.

What do the Bremain Labour supporters on GN feel about this?

whitewave Thu 09-Feb-17 14:30:45

Yes that's right welshwife we've known this for ever. I can't think why other people don't want to recognise this fact. We will be in severe difficulties without the immgrant population expanding the economy and paying taxes.

Welshwife Thu 09-Feb-17 14:40:21

Especially if all the pensioners return from the EU !

Anya Thu 09-Feb-17 15:00:09

However it s absolute nonsense to suggest all univerities are equal and that a medical degree from say the Pan African University Nigeria is equivalent to one from Imperial College or Harvard!

Where did I say this Mair ....You making things up now??? wink

Now there's a novel technique....grin

the immigrant population are young and healthy and take little from the NHS

Crude stereotyping Welsh.
Many are bringing ageing parents to join them, some are bringing disabled relatives to benefit from our NHS.
Some are not healthy , just as not all young BRits are healthy.

This is especially true of those mainly from Africa and Asia who have TB, HIV, Malaria, other tropical diseases.

Almost all the young immigrants are breeding faster than the majority ethnic group and putting strain on maternity services nurseries and schools.

Joelsnan Thu 09-Feb-17 15:29:22

Welshwife I agree the majority of immigrants are younger, however, these young people are not always fit and healthy. One of the mist often and earliest services used are our maternity services which are very expensive and are often not free in their home countries these are services which the elders dont need. They need dental treatment, contraceptives etc. Their children require all the standard health orovision that elders don't. In many instances the people who arrive here come from countries with poorer infrastructure and health care than here so are generally in a poorer health condition than we currently are. Just think how we were sixty or seventy years ago with regard to general health and welfare and these are the conditions that many immigrants are coming from.
If the conditions at home were as good if not better than here why would they come?

Mair Thu 09-Feb-17 15:34:19

Another very good point JN.

I find it quite bizarre how some people are so in thrall to immigration that they do not even want to question that part of it which is clearly NOT beneficial.

The only immigrants who might benefit us are those who are high earners and healthy, and not even then if it means they displace a Briton from a job. All others 'take out' more than they 'put in'.

Joelsnan Thu 09-Feb-17 15:55:12

Why do some posters feel that UK would sink without trace without being propped up be mass immigration?
Just consider the island of Taiwan, a tiny island, a massive economy with little or no assistance from immigrants.
Do we have so little faith in ourselves that this is the case?
Most of the successful industrial nations outside EU do not rely on cheap imported workers to drive their economies they do it themselves, just as we used to.

Mair Thu 09-Feb-17 17:27:33

Do they think this though really? Isn't it that they just love immigration and despise Britain and British people? Weirdly usually not enough to actually emigrate to these other countries they love to holiday in travel in! grin

JessM Thu 09-Feb-17 18:30:13

Just look at Japan which is having real problems because it has an ageing population and so few immigrants...

Crude stereotyping to borrow a phrase. Why, whenever someone says something vaguely positive about some immigrants do they then get accused of wanting a total open door to the whole of the world etc? I don't know anyone who wants that, I live in a very cosmopolitan Area and most people get along, integrate etc. Lots of mixed relationships.

Ana Thu 09-Feb-17 18:37:09

It works the other way too, suzied (and much more often, certainly on this site), i.e. whenever anyone says something vaguely negative about some immigrants they get accused of being racist or xenophobic.

petra Thu 09-Feb-17 19:49:20

Because the word racist has been bandied around so much it has become meaningless.
As an instance: I read today that Nigel fararge was called a racist because he claimed that Romania should never have been allowed to join the eu: totally meaningless in this context. The reason for him saying this had nothing whatsoever to do with race or religion.

durhamjen Thu 09-Feb-17 20:34:20

I wondered yesterday why all the Tories who said they wanted EU migrants to stay did not support the clause to ensure that would happen.

This is why.

The only immigrants who are likely to be stemmed by Brexit are the ones from the EU and those are the ones I was referring to. They are also the ones who may go home more frequently or seasonally.
Once we leave the EU there is likely to be more immigration from the Indian and African continents - indeed Priti Patel told India this as a positive during the referendum campaign. These are the people with a poorer health service and more likely to bring family members to UK.

Mair Thu 09-Feb-17 20:51:24

Just look at Japan which is having real problems because it has an ageing population and so few immigrants

And Britains not having problems with it's exploding population cracking infrastructure, housing shortage, terrorism, and native population riven with division and hate?

Funny that you mention Japan as Britain and Japan have the unhappiest young people in the world, but we are in no position to be looking at them with smug satisfaction!

Mair Thu 09-Feb-17 20:53:32

That's where youre very very wrong Welsh. Many of our third country immigrants come here using an EU passport they have acquired.

Fitzy54 Thu 09-Feb-17 23:32:32

We need a lot more young hardworking men and women if we are to keep the country going. That's very clear. I can't see how that will happen without significant and sustained immigration.

Welshwife Thu 09-Feb-17 23:41:47

Where is that information Mair - I have never seen that reported before so am either reading the wrong reports or you maybe have access to information not available to everyone.

Rigby46 Thu 09-Feb-17 23:50:15

Welsh you're not seriously asking Mair to back up any of her assertions with facts are you? shock

Rigby46 Thu 09-Feb-17 23:52:02

Welshwife Fri 10-Feb-17 00:04:22

Well I had never heard of the fact she was giving - it is a very interesting one and wondered about the source of the info grin

Rigby46 Fri 10-Feb-17 00:11:32

Well wonder away because you sure won't be getting a link grin
