The Trump presidency

The last Trump thread has run out of space. I suspect we need a new one. As he steams through his first week issuing royal edicts on a range of things and asserting that he will build a wall, how will politicians in Washington react to his fascist agenda along with his apparently immature and decidedly dodgy personality?

So what Anya says could be right if he is considered to be
at risk of harm to himself or others

However, those who voted for him so enthusiastically may say that he is saving them.

Anya Tue 31-Jan-17 15:01:39

i knew my mother was 'certifiable' before she was sectioned for the first time. Common sense and observing her behaviour was enough.

Lest we get bogged down in inexact science (which much of psychology and psychiatry is) or semantics, just ask yourself a simple question, are his actions (both past and present) those of a rational or irrational mind?

Jalima maybe your friend has had to practice her smile too grin

Exactly - it's his behaviour that matters, not the psychiatric label that he might have.
There are literally hundreds of these labels, if anyone is interested you can see how they've changed over the years from this link:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diagnostic_and_Statistical_Manual_of_Mental_Disorders#DSM-IV_.281994.29

hmm I'm sure I used the word narcissistic somewhere on GN in the last day or so. If so I meant it to refer to a personality trait not a disorder. The two are different. Just as if you said someone had a few paranoid tendencies not the same as a diagnosis of paranoia. So apologies if it was me that set that hare running.

But gratified to know I can still spot a right wing conspiracy theory at 50 paces smile

daphnedill Tue 31-Jan-17 16:44:24

Exactly! It's the behaviour which matters and whether he's a danger to himself and others. As POTUS, he obviously has the power to be a danger to more people than most people on the planet. There are many people with all sorts of traits, but it's the degree of disorder which matters. Not only that, but many personality disorders are comordid with other conditions.

x post TriciaF Sorry!

The man is a menace

rosesarered Tue 31-Jan-17 17:49:35

Unless he goes around physically attacking people, he is unlikely to be locked up.grin anything else is wishful thinking.

durhamjen Tue 31-Jan-17 18:03:03

No wonder he needs his own security men. I mean from his own companies, not US security.

This is worth reading. I am surprised Mair hasn't told us all about it - or at least Farage's side of the conversation.

Well, we can't dictate American policy and HM has had to entertain her fair share of dictators/despots/advocates of torture and or murder/megalomaniacs/narcissists

Apparently when that nice Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife popped over for a State Visit allegedly she hid behind a bush at one point to avoid them.
When Emporer Hirohito came for a State Visit in 1971 apparently people who had been prisoners of war lined the route and turned their backs on him and the crowds were silent.

That is a much better way of showing disapproval than the hysteria being generated these days imo.

The visit will go ahead eventually because he is the elected President of the United States of America, not because we like him or approve of him in any way.

Jalima Tue 31-Jan-17 18:22:06

murderers/megalomaniacs/narcissists
Sorry, typo!

Anniebach Tue 31-Jan-17 18:34:15

If the route is lined with thousands all turning their backs he will tweet thst more turned out to greet him than for any previous state visit. I shudder to think what he will claim queenie said to him

durhamjen Tue 31-Jan-17 18:37:24

It has been said today that the Queen is upset about it, by someone who worked for her a few years ago.
If Trump and May cared, they would tone down the visit and only have it as the petition states, he should be allowed to come here as head of the US government, but it should not be a state visit as it would cause embarrassment to the Queen.

Jalima Tue 31-Jan-17 18:38:54

If the streets are thronged with people waving banners and shouting he will tweet that the banners say 'Welcome Mr President' and that people were really excited to see him!

Stay home?

Something else from the link.

Chewbacca Tue 31-Jan-17 19:35:47

That's an interesting post you've linked Joelsnan, who'd have thought that strong support for Trump would come from that quarter. Wonder if Trump has business links there too?

Chewbacca Tue 31-Jan-17 19:46:36

Found this on the "So Entrepreneurial" website. It would appear that many very sucessful business people succeed, in part, due to having some psychological problems, in fact, it suggests that these very "problems " are what enables someone to disengage from normal societal rules and focus intently on making increasing power, money and strength. Which traits do you recognise in Mr T?

Lack of emotion (flat affect)
Strongly held beliefs that are not based in reality (delusions)
Hearing or seeing things that are not there (hallucinations)
Problems paying attention
Thoughts “jump” between unrelated topics ( “loose associations”)
Bizarre behaviors
Social isolation

petra Tue 31-Jan-17 19:57:18

I've just heard the explanation as to why certain countries were chosen for the * temporary* ban. It's because their data systems aren't good enough to check people.

Chewbacca Tue 31-Jan-17 20:00:53

Really Petra? Where was that from? If that's right, Trumps kept the reasons for his ban to himself for some reason!

Ana Tue 31-Jan-17 20:03:43

It has been said today that the Queen is upset about it, by someone who worked for her a few years ago.

Must be true then...wot no link? hmm

durhamjen Tue 31-Jan-17 20:05:53

And Saudi Arabia, petra? What's happening there?
Are the Saudis stopping Muslims travelling to the USA anyway because their systems are good enough to check people?
I doubt it.
