The last Trump thread has run out of space. I suspect we need a new one. As he steams through his first week issuing royal edicts on a range of things and asserting that he will build a wall, how will politicians in Washington react to his fascist agenda along with his apparently immature and decidedly dodgy personality?

marieeliz, I believe there are things called "executive orders" that US presidents can sign off. Obama used them too. I'm not sure how soon they can be put into effect or even if they always can be.
Executive orders according to Wiki. They have to be within the laws already in existence.
This shows how quickly they are implemented.
"Yesterday, President Trump signed an Executive Order banning Muslims from seven countries from entering the USA.
Today we hear that this ban will include people already in the US. Arrests have been made in New York, including one of an Iraqi who has acted as an interpreter for the US Army. In another, a leading young cardiovascular scientist from Iran has been unable to take up a Harvard fellowship in America.
This afternoon Prime Minister Theresa May was repeatedly asked to condemn this action. She refused.
After first ducking the question, she said: “The United States is responsible for the United State policy on refugees.” "
I was listening to the local radio yesterday about the NHS and the US health service and what will happen when Obamacare goes.
Prior to Obamacare, the biggest cause of bankruptcy in the USA was the cost of healthcare.
www.thecanary.co/2017/01/27/remember-350m-nhs-well-looks-like-us-health-giants-will/
I am worried about this.
Yes Anya, it's negative again. Nothing to be positive about if the trade deals include our NHS.
Exactly so....it's their business, not ours, to tell them what their policy on refugees is.
If you read the article, dj, there is a link to exactly what Trump's executive orders have been. It explains in much more detail what the so-called Banning Muslims thing is about.
On an American forum I sometimes go on, Obama care was very disliked. You cannot judge this by our own views and what we have grown up with ( NHS)
So why have arrests been made already in New York, bags?
Comparing Obamacare with the NHS is, I think, misleading. I am willing to be corrected here, but as I understand it those qualifying can now take out cheaper medical insurance however, American friends tell me that this has meant an increase in the charges made by the medical profession and that middle class people can no long afford medical insurance. I seem to recall one lady on the radio saying that under Obamacare the cost of treatment was quoted as $8,000 when she asked how much if she paid for it herself it was $2,000
Not comparing the two. Just saying that American executives are longing for their companies to be able to take over the NHS through the UK/US trade deal.
I meant to add that I think Obamacare is of itself a good idea just very badly thought out and implemented.
I don't know, dj, but I stringly suspect that suspicions of illegality may have something to do with it. Read the link I mentioned. It's quite detailed and even if one disagrees with the premises it's based on, it does not look completely loopy. There is reasoning behind it, political reasoning, with which one can disagree. It's not clear at this stage how much of the executive order can be implemented.
So I guess I'm just saying keep your hair on.
Have you ever been to the States? Their checks on even temporary visitors are legion! They even wanted Minibags's fingerprints and iris pics when she was a child of nine!
Perhaps Theresa May has refused to comment on Trumps decision, regarding refugees, because she was being mindful of the effect that Obama's interference in our referendum had? Obama took the unprecedented decision to "speak to the British public " to warn them that if they did vote to leave the EU, he would make sure they went to the back of the queue in any trade negotiations. That inflamed many voters who felt that he had no right to interfere in British politics. Maybe TM learnt something from that and is being more shrewd in voicing her opinions so early in the relationship?
Good point, chewbacca. It could also be that TM simply is fairly shrewd as a politician. Certainly looks that way so far.
I do hope they fire up Prince Philip before Trumps visit.

For those of you quite unconcerned about the effect of Trump's EO
From twitter.
Gregory Norminton Retweeted Nadhim Zahawi
A British Conservative Member of Parliament cannot now enter the United States. Mind you, why would anyone want to, these days?
Nadhim Zahawi @nadhimzahawi
Had confirmation that the order does apply to myself and my wife as we were both born in Iraq. Even if we are not dual Nat.
Nadhim Zahawi is Conservative MP. I would suspect that he checked this directly with the US Embassy.
Has anyone said they're "quite unconcerned"?
Just saw comments on Twitter pointing out that we don't know what the British government is doing out of the view of cameras and interviewers. Don't assume it's doing nothing about UK citizens affected by the US executive order on immigration.
Today we hear that this ban will include people already in the US. Arrests have been made in New York, including one of an Iraqi who has acted as an interpreter for the US Army. In another, a leading young cardiovascular scientist from Iran has been unable to take up a Harvard fellowship in America.
Bags, people already in the country? An Iraqi who has worked as an interpreter for the army considered to be a risk?
Even people with dual nationality not being allowed into the country for the next 90 days?
As for your question about me going to the US, no I haven't but my son was married to someone who has an American mother and a Norwegian father. If his wife went to the US and used her British passport she was questioned more than the other British in the party as they wanted to know why she wasn't using her American passport.
Keep my hair on while all hell breaks loose in the US, and Theresa May will not stand up for the British against Trump?
Trump knows May needs the US more than the US needs the UK.
By the way, I had read your article. I am not reassured as Trump has already said that people of certain nationalities cannot go to the US for the next 90 days, by which time he will have sorted it out properly. Trump has a majority in both houses to back him up.
"SumOfUs pressure in Germany just convinced Lufthansa Airlines to release a statement saying it was severing its relationship with Breitbart because of is “violent, sexist, extremist and radical political content”. And yesterday, a spokesperson from the University of British Columbia in Canada said, “It’s regrettable” and that they "have spoken to the ad agency. We are concerned about being respectful and tolerant."
Already 750 corporations, universities and organizations have said "no" to Breitbart and have refused to consent to its hateful rhetoric. Let's make sure Amazon joins them. "
Good to know that pressure works in some situations.

Carol49cat, Bill Clinton did what Trump only talked about?
Trump gave an interview in the i saying he was far worse with the women than Clinton ever was. That's why he didn't stand earlier. Trump also bankrolled Clinton at the time, and they played golf together.
