Spending on the NHS in England has increased over recent years. The question is whether it is increasing enough to meet the needs of a growing and ageing population.

According to the Institute of Fiscal Studies, there are 53.2m adults in the UK, of whom 30.1m are income tax payers. Of those, 4.4m pay higher rate tax and contribute 38.5% of total income tax revenue. An further 0.33m pay tax in the additional rate band and contribute 28.0% of total income tax. If these figures are correct, under 9% of UK adults contribute two-thirds of total income tax revenue.
I suspect the income tax contribution of higher tax payers has not declined substantially over recent years but, if I have time, I need to investigate further. If these figures are wrong, no doubt people will say so.
