Obviously I'm not sure Labour will win , nobody knows, it was a guess.

If I were to put a bet on I would back Sam Wheeler or Julie Reed .

If either of them get the nomination then I will probably hold a different view on Galloway/Corbyn but if it is one of the candidates that backed Burnham in the Leadership Election then I will watch this space with interest.

As for saying :-

" but I don't think Momentum and Labour are working separately."

To be honest I don 't know what to say to that.

Notwithstanding the huge Labour majority, Galloway could pull it off - he's done it before in Bradford and Bethnal Green.

He's a rabble-rouser and attracts a lot of media attention.

Anniebach Tue 21-Mar-17 11:10:53

There is labour and there is Corbyn, most labour MP's are not working with momentum, the Corbynites are. Corbyn is leader of the Labour Party by the power of Momentum

Apparently George Galloway announced that he would stand in Gorton on an alt-right wesbsite.

I hesitate to quote the Daily Mail, but this actually seems to be true.

Yes, it's Arron Banks' site, modelled on Breitbart.

daphnedill Tue 21-Mar-17 12:11:57

Riverwalk The difference is that Gorton is a strange constituency. It has Manchester Uni's main halls of residence and quite a few young professionals. It's a very young constituency and voted Remain.

daphnedill Tue 21-Mar-17 12:33:24

Galloway is a Trump supporter. Trump and Arron Banks are buddies. Maybe that's why the news broke on Banks' website. Don't forget Galloway has a TV programme on Russia Today. The plot thickens.hmm

Riverwalk Tue 21-Mar-17 12:44:20

daphne in by-elections any constituency can be strange! I think Galloway will garner the 'protest' vote - BTW he was also a Brexiteer.

I can't find a link right now but I read somewhere that a considerable percentage of Trump voters had Bernie Sanders as a second choice! hmm

Iam64 Tue 21-Mar-17 13:37:05

Galloway never sells himself short does he. The speech setting out his candidacy could have been a Trump speech. Galloway is another cold narcissist, untrustworthy and lacking a moral compass, other than his own world view of course. Let's hope he doesn't win Gorton.

Good post Iam, sums up the toad perfectly

It is a big ask to expect the LibDem candidate to win in Gorton, as Gerald Kaufman had a huge majority, but George Galloway's intervention should take votes from former Labour supporters, especially those who voted for Brexit. This constituency was 62% for Remain, and the LibDems are standing up for them.

The Liberal Democrat's candidate Jackie Pearcey served as a Councillor in Manchester Gorton for over 20 years.

She says “Manchester Gorton deserves a local champion to stand up for our community against Theresa May’s hard Brexit plans, against the wishes of local people. Labour can’t stand up for us whilst they’re too busy arguing amongst themselves in Westminster and supporting the Tories on Brexit. Labour have also failed locally, just this week increasing council tax for Manchester’s poorest residents by 22%. It is clear that Labour has been treating Manchester like a one-party state and has been taking it for granted for too long. It is also vital that Manchester Gorton has someone to stand up for local NHS services, and defends them from Tory cuts. This great area deserves better.”

Look at the 2010 results:

Labour Gerald Kaufman 19,211
Liberal Democrat Qassim Afzal 12,508
Conservative Caroline Healy 4,224
Green Justine Hall 1,048
Respect Mohammed Zulfikar 507

My money is on the same order again with perhaps the Conservatives and Greens swapped round. The Greens were second in 2015.

Gerald Kaufman had a 28,000 majority (probably LD students) in 2015, but I bet that's considerably reduced.

Labours membership is to dip be,ow half million, reports that 40,000 members are in arrears, wonder why !

rosesarered Wed 22-Mar-17 09:57:55

Tom Watson telling it how it is ( as long last somebody on the shadow cabinet has some guts.) Even he, with all his union links, is being denounced by some though, unbelievably!

Anniebach Wed 22-Mar-17 10:04:02

Not surprising Rosesarered, the diehard far left will cling to Corbyn-Momentum and defend him no matter how often he fails. Where is he anyway , rather like playing where's Wally

POGS Wed 22-Mar-17 10:46:56

I'm so surprised Len McClusky says he has not met John Lansman.

Momentum have an office in the Unite Union building doesn't it.

Does anybody remember the Dispatches programme on Momentum (we had a thread on GN about it). Momentum were well and truly ensconced in the Unite Building.

It sounds as though Corbyn had a bit of a rough time on his 'away day' to London.

Anniebach Wed 22-Mar-17 11:03:26

Yes Momentum did have an office in the Unite building. Would you believe at the away day to London some shouted at Corbyn-Momentum , wonder if there is a glass door in the room for him.

POGS Wed 22-Mar-17 11:14:26

"Tom Watson saying it how it is."

Tom Watson is not an MP I take to but he has had a very close relationship with Mc Clusky and this must have put their 'kinship' into melt down. I respect him for that if little else.

Do you remember the vote rigging scandal involving Falkirk / Unite Union / Len McClusky / Karie Murphy and Tom Watson.?

Karie Murphy now works for Jeremy Corbyn as his 'polical adviser'.

Wasn't the outcome of the Falkirk vote rigging scandal Ed Milliband put in place the 'one man one vote' system. Something Tom Watson has been trying to get shot of fairly recently I believe.

Anniebach Wed 22-Mar-17 11:36:43

Yes it was following the Falkirk scandal that Milliband brought in the one man one vote .

I didn't vote for Watson in the deputy leadership contest, don't think him a good deputy but in fairness one needs to remember who he is deputy to.

My voting record for leader and deputy is rather poor.

Rigby46 Wed 22-Mar-17 12:34:30

Well I think women should be able to vote too grin

POGS Wed 22-Mar-17 13:04:56

Perhaps I should have said 'One Member one vote'.

Was there a mirror in the room when Len McClusky came up with the words ' skullduggery, smears and secret plots ' to describe Tom Watson.
