Not an election please

People have mentioned manifestos - does anybody have any idea what this "rolling manifesto" - that Labour's Dawn Butler spoke about - would look like? How would it work?

At least Corbyn will implement Brexit, although what kind of deal he would manage to get is worrying, but Labour and the Conservatives will honour the outcome of the referendum. Which is good news for all Leave voters.

You mean we might actually be able to stay in the EU, and the last year will all have been like a bad dream...

I suppose anything is possible Ana but my opinion, for what it's worth, is that the EU would have to become something very different for us to decide we wanted back in or them to decide they wanted us.

What I do believe is that TM did not call the election for the reasons she said in her speech. The idea that "the country is coming together but Westminster is not" either alludes to her being completely out of touch with the country or doesn't understand democracy - or both.

I believe she called the election because she believed the polls and thought she could win and win big which would give her more freedom on Brexit and within her party. Also she will be rid of the laughable manifesto promises that Cameron put together when he thought he could not win. The interesting bit is that this may be a good call and she may get what she wants - or it may not but we will all have to wait and see.

Yes, I agree with you that of course that's why she called the election GGMk2.

I'm not really sure what all those hoping to oust the tories by tactical voting are hoping to gain.

There will lots of opinions on this Ana and it would be interesting to read what others think. The only person who actually knows is TM and she may have convinced herself it was for higher reasons by now - people do.

The other reason she called it gg was because a couple of dozen Tory MPs are being investigated for fraud, and she will lose her majority if they get charged.

I think the fact that 20+ Conservative MPs and officials are being investigated for electoral fraud (possibly a criminal offence - presumably if proven to be a deliberate act), is likely to have had some influence. Better to go to the country relatively untarnished so far as the law is concerned, and from a perceived position of strength than to risk the chance of proceedings being brought and potential voters being alienated.

Also, of course, if the Conservatives win she will claim that gives the party the right to be left alone to decide the terms of Brexit without people claiming they haven't got a mandate.

I must admit I personally think her internal problems outweighed her external ones by quite a long way ww plus wanting the polls to be correct (and they may be) but I suppose we will have to wait for history's analysis to know.

Surely the fact there is an ongoing 'investigation' into Tory MP's would be 'the last' reason to call for a General Election!

What does she gain in your opinion from the subject being raised at such a crucial time? I don't follow that logic.

I have said before this a General Election that possibly means the Conservatives have the most to lose. It is not a done deal by any means but as long as the overall winner is elected without political spin and skull duggery then whatever the % , whether it be 48% to 52%, or any other than %, that is what the electorate have voted for.

My concern is clearly known if a win is only achieved by 'tactical voting' then that is not a win in my eyes but it would appear that is not the belief of everybody.

POGs what are you on about? Why is the word investigation in quotation marks? There has been a police investigation not 'investigation' and the files have been passed to the CPS. I agree about not seeing the logic of calling a GE ( and it being anything to do with a police investigation)
Should imagine the logic of having a lead in the polls and wanting to be an elected PM and a mandate to be stronger with Brexit negotiations would be more than enough.

No-one can know for sure if a win has been caused by tactical voting. Whoever has won will be sure to claim that they were enthusiastically supported by the voters.

Theresa May said why she is calling a General Election so she can hopefully get a bigger majority and be voted in with her own manifesto and stop the opposition trying to derail Brexit. I have every faith in her succeeding.

My OH is a card carrying member of the Labour Party and the only other leader he has been so angry with was Thatcher. He feels very strongly that everyone should vote but he can't bring himself to vote lib dem so it looks as if for the first time in his life he will vote Tory.
