Statement of intent not the manifesto

1. Reverse the cut in corporation tax saving £64bn over the parliamentary cycle
2£10 minimum wage for all over 18s
3. 17% rise in unpaid farmers allowance (exrea £500 pa) - paid by reversing the Inheritance Tax cut.
4. Renationalise railways as the franchises lapse
5. Stop NHS private contracts. Phase out existing private contracts thus saving 3.5bn - 5bn at present going as profit to the private health companies
6. Build 200k homes a year. Half from the private sector and half council homes by giving LAs the power to borrow against assets. This should ensure that 12bn housing benefit bill at present going into private landlords pockets should gradually fall.
7. 4 new public holidays
8. End zero- hours jobs by guaranteeing a contract for all workers on regular hours.
9 Ban any company from tendering for government contracts if they are based in an off shore tax haven and pay their CEO more tha £350k pa
10 stop the opening of new free schools and grammars
11 Stop sweetheart deLs between HMRC and bug corps. All large companies should publish their tax returns
12 Eradicate gender pay gap
13 cut business rates by £1.5bn
14 End the practice by large corps, of taking longer than the accepted 28 days to pay SMEs

A young couple we know ( teachers) have just bought a house in Tower Hamlets.
It is doable, as some boroughs are more affordable than others.

And it wasn't debate. I never claimed I was debating with that post. I was appreciating an opinion because it chimed with mine. I think we're allowed to express opinions, even ones other might find unpleasant, on GN, aren't we?

Jalima1108 Sun 30-Apr-17 13:58:10

Well, explain how.

grin grin grin

I didn't actually quiz them on their financial affairs as it's none of my business.
But if I find out I will certainly post it on Gransnet for all the world to see if you need some tips daphnedill.

Jalima1108 Sun 30-Apr-17 14:00:47

If someone posts something that seems to be completely implausible, why not challenge it?
Precisely JessM.
That is why I mildly pointed out that Elo's statement was not an absolute fact.

London is a spread of boroughs sprawling a long way out from the centre.
I used to live and work there. I think some people who don't know the area imagine it is all out of reach house price wise.It isn't.

Jalima1108 Sun 30-Apr-17 14:09:05

Well, I don't think they are buying in Knightsbridge or Kensington or even Islington.

I think one of the main issues that many lifelong Labour voters have now is that they cannot imagine a Labour Party in its current state, where most Labour MPs have very little confidence in thr Party leader, as being able to form an effective government.

This problem is so huge that, even with a decent manifesto, people don't see the point of voting Labour in this general election, because it could never be implemented.

Meanwhile, for all her faults, Theresa May does seem to have inspired in voters, even ones who wouldn't normally vote Conservative, a confidence that she will get things done that they want done.

rosesarered Sun 30-Apr-17 14:12:06

No, more like Tower Hamlets, Barking, Walthamstow.

Exactly bags and what with Brexit, this GE is like no other.

Ana Sun 30-Apr-17 14:14:33

I seem to remembr some time back that you were hoping to move, daphnedill. Perhaps it would be somewhere less expensive and you'd be able to see the wood for the trees.

Ana Sun 30-Apr-17 14:15:38

But, roses, the post mortem will be just as bad as the last one..hmm

Ana Sun 30-Apr-17 14:16:10

Perhaps they won't bother with exit polls this time?

Good to see you keeping up with the press, roses and Ana.

rosesarered Sun 30-Apr-17 14:42:25

Ana grin I can see the post mortem now! It will be a replay of the last GE and the referendum. It will go on ad nauseam until either a Labour Government gets in at the following GE or we die, whichever comes first.

Jalima1108 Sun 30-Apr-17 14:45:20

I'll await the manifesto

Ana Sun 30-Apr-17 14:50:14

roses, a great many of us may die before a Labour government gets in again...

durhamjen Sun 30-Apr-17 14:59:40

Those of you who want to wait for the manifestos could just go and wait for the manifestos, and leave the rest of us to debate and discuss.

Anniebach Sun 30-Apr-17 15:03:51

One problem I have is the labour shadow cabinet, like their leader they have no experience, many been in the house two years , Yvette Cooper 20 years, Hilary Benn 18 years for example, when one watches these two in the select committee sittings the lack of experience in the shadow cabinet is so obvious. Excluding Diane Abbott , if only we could, where is she by the by, surely not silenced !

Ana Sun 30-Apr-17 15:08:45

You're not debating and discussing durhamjen. You're just telling everyone not to vote Tory.

durhamjen Sun 30-Apr-17 15:54:46

And what are you doing, Ana?

Anniebach Sun 30-Apr-17 15:57:04

Jen, you think telling a poster to piss off, another to shut up, another to change the record is debating? It isn't .

durhamjen Sun 30-Apr-17 16:07:11

I think you'll find I've said a bit more than that, Annie.
You are trying to do a Corbyn on me, just mentioning the bits that fit your idea of me, like you do with him all the time.
That's why I told you to change the record and you know it.

Beammeupscottie Sun 30-Apr-17 16:37:14

I saw with interest that Corbyn is being challenged in Islington by one of his own Party (Foster?). Foster made the point that ab has been making for months that Corbyn does not want to win this Election and hopes it sees off those who are a thorn in his side, eg those in the marginals who are on the more sensible side of the Party. This will leave him with a small band of Stalinites. I am beginning to wonder if Jezza is completely sane.
And as for the young vote. Don't insult them; they know a plonker when they see one.
