Statement of intent not the manifesto

1. Reverse the cut in corporation tax saving £64bn over the parliamentary cycle
2£10 minimum wage for all over 18s
3. 17% rise in unpaid farmers allowance (exrea £500 pa) - paid by reversing the Inheritance Tax cut.
4. Renationalise railways as the franchises lapse
5. Stop NHS private contracts. Phase out existing private contracts thus saving 3.5bn - 5bn at present going as profit to the private health companies
6. Build 200k homes a year. Half from the private sector and half council homes by giving LAs the power to borrow against assets. This should ensure that 12bn housing benefit bill at present going into private landlords pockets should gradually fall.
7. 4 new public holidays
8. End zero- hours jobs by guaranteeing a contract for all workers on regular hours.
9 Ban any company from tendering for government contracts if they are based in an off shore tax haven and pay their CEO more tha £350k pa
10 stop the opening of new free schools and grammars
11 Stop sweetheart deLs between HMRC and bug corps. All large companies should publish their tax returns
12 Eradicate gender pay gap
13 cut business rates by £1.5bn
14 End the practice by large corps, of taking longer than the accepted 28 days to pay SMEs

I had to go to hospital last week. Never had to pay for parking, in the middle of a town near a railway station, and no problem parking. I was there for two hours and never heard anyone else complain about parking either.

That's good to read Anya. I've just seen Jeremy C on Channel 4 news, talking to a large group - don't know where he was as I missed the start. Jeremy was full of enthusiasm and smiles, let's hope he can encourage people to vote Labour.
If younger people can be persuaded to vote, all may not be lost. Something like 30 or 40% of young people support Labour.

Ana Mon 08-May-17 20:12:50

Are you saying there are no parking charges at the hospital you attended, durhamjen, or that there was no charge for parking in the town?

Why would you hear anyone complaining about parking if there were no charges? confused

Jalima1108 Mon 08-May-17 20:18:14

So is parking free at some hospitals djen?

At one hospital I had to attend there is no car park, the nearest one is £8.50 for two hours or go on the bus which is not great if you are not well.

Ana Mon 08-May-17 20:22:15

And of course some areas of the UK have far more large hospitals than others. I expect England is quite well catered for.

durhamjen Mon 08-May-17 20:29:14

Never had to pay for parking at the hospital. Yes, some are free.
If I have to go to Durham hospital I park at the park and ride, and catch the bus to the hospital, although I now make sure I get back to the carpark before 7.00pm., because the carpark is locked and you could be charged £70 for overnight parking.
Cheapest and easiest way is by ambulance, but not recommended as there is something really wrong with you then!

It surprises me that the brexiters, not just on GN, but everywhere, come across as bitter and angry, in spite of the fact they won the advisory referendum, when 37% of the electorate ( 25%) of the population voted to leave and the government immediately took the advice of the Daily Mail and proclaimed this was the "will of the people" and could not be challenged.

Since these people look like getting their own way and damaging the country irrevocably, why are they always so angry?

Ana Mon 08-May-17 21:36:29

Goodness, where did that come from varian? grin

Anya Mon 08-May-17 21:46:14

Pack it in varian that's been done to death.

durhamjen Mon 08-May-17 21:47:56

Jalima, having lived in Hull, York and now Durham over the last 30 years, I've been to lots of different hospitals in five different counties and paid different amounts of money to park. My husband was in different hospitals for anything up to six weeks at a time, so I learnt that the first thing you had to do was ask the ward sisters about parking passes.
Although my husband was disabled, I couldn't use his pass unless I was taking him or picking him up.
We spent a lot of money on parking, so the idea of free parking at all hospitals seems like a dream to me.
I can't remember which one of the group of Tory filibusterers talked it out in the last parliament - Philip Davies, I think. Just think, if he hadn't the Labour party wouldn't have been able to promise it today.

varian Mon 08-May-17 21:54:56

My post about the angry brexiters might have been better posted on another thread, but it still needs to be said again and again. We should not acquiesce in this brexit nonsense. Our grandchildren deserve better.

rosesarered Mon 08-May-17 22:24:41

Varian that is a ridiculous comment, and it certainly isn't those who wanted Brexit that are angry and bitter about it.
As Anya says 'pack it in' as enough harm and division has been caused on GN already.

GracesGranMK2 Mon 08-May-17 23:01:40

I don't think people will ever stop fighting varian. It would be madness to accept that this was a sensible way to decide and even more madness to think it will not affect us, our children and our grandchildren negatively.

durhamjen Mon 08-May-17 23:07:10

This is why you should vote Labour. It's not just about car parking.

Not sure if this is the manifesto, but it must be close to it.

The Tories have said that the Labour promise to end hospital car parking wasn't worth the paper it was written on.
However, in 2008, May was campaigning to stop the charges in her own hospital car parks.

Jalima1108 Mon 08-May-17 23:34:06

Cheapest and easiest way is by ambulance, but not recommended as there is something really wrong with you then!
Well, I had to do that last time and hope not to again!!

One hospital I went to doesn't even have a car park so the nearest is a public car park; very handy for the buses but if you have an eye problem it's not a great idea to travel miles on a bumpy bus.

MaizieD Tue 09-May-17 13:19:26

This is utterly bizarre. Labour has expelled three party members for supporting a cross party attempt to unseat Jeremy Hunt.

They really do have a death wish, don't they?

Mrs Corbyn will not be appearing with Jeremy on the One Show. Is this good or bad news?

Free hospital parking would be fine but is it the best way to spend money on the NHS? And why on earth make people with health insurance pay for it? Just because they both have a connection with healthcare? Is that likely to be seen as the top NHS priority by those who work in healthcare? Another gimmick like linking vat on independent school fees to free school meals. This is all daft. There may be a case for taxing school fees and health insurance but specifying to such a detailed extent what is to happen to the money makes no sense other than as a catchy soundbite.

If Labour were to win the GE, they would still pursue brexit at least this is what I understood JC to have said. Still no doubt under pressure that would change as JC would be easy to manipulate.

varian Tue 09-May-17 13:56:46

It certainly is bizarre that these longstanding Labour members in South West Surrey have been expelled for daring to support a doctor challenging Jeremy Hunt. The local LibDems and Greens are supporting him and will not field candidates against him.

This seems to me the worst kind of Labour tribal politics. The LibDems and Greens believe that it is sometimes for the greater good for parties to co-operate and under FPTP it has to be done this way.

If we had proportional representation, it would not be necessary, and PR would tend to lead parties to co-operate more, as they do in most successful countries. Am I right in thinking Jeremy Corbyn does not back PR?

angelab Tue 09-May-17 14:09:49

nigglynellie I don't think it's fair to say JC would be easy to manipulate, or he would have caved in long ago to other labour MPs

nigglynellie Tue 09-May-17 14:35:16

You're probably right angelab, perhaps I should have said that JC would be more easily manipulated in the negotiations up against Juncker and his pals! Not for the faint hearted that's for sure!!

angelab Tue 09-May-17 15:31:03

I agree but maybe a less combative approach than TM would be more successful?
