In 2016, there were 164,000 citizens who immigrated to the UK. We have always had total control over the numbers from non-EU countries, so why hasn't it happened before now? The EU makes no difference to them.

Many of the non-EU immigrants were students - 194,608 students in total (EU and non-EU). Over 70,000 were from China, paying mega-bucks for courses in the UK.

16,600 immigrants were from the Republic of Ireland. Irish citizens have been allowed freedom of movement since long before the EU.

So how the heck is May going to reduce net migration to below 100,000, unless she's planning to force about 200,000 to emigrate?

Just watching a recording of the Daily Politics and really excited to see Jo Coburn - who has been so biased so far - telling a Con representative, who said we do not have a presidential system, the Theresa May seemed to think we did with her me, myself and us! Is this a moment of change?

In answer to the OP, I would say that Teresa May's blank cheque should be limited to two years. The way I see it , this is an exceptional general election justified by exceptional circumstances (brought about, let us not forget, by Conservatives taking us all for fools and promising a referendum on Europe when they believed that a remain vote was guaranteed ). If Britex is the overwhelming justification for this general election, then the life of the next government should be limited to two years and there should be another general election as soon as we are out of Europe!

As there is no longer any justification for the 5 year parliament, then presumably whoever wins can call another election when they want.

It would only be up to whoever won if they had a big enough majority, though. Up to us to make sure May doesn't.

Parliament will need another vote on Brexit in two years time, and if May has made a hash of it, there could be another election anyway, because neither side will have confidence in her - always assuming she wins this election.

By the way, MamaCaz, you are in charge, along with everyone else who has a vote. It just doesn't feel like it most of the time.

We are only at the beginning of the official election campaign but unless something dramatic happens it looks as if the great leader Kim Jong May will get her landslide.

The country will be plunged into confrontational negotiations. We will be told it is all going well, then when the "bloody difficult woman" antagonises all the other EU countries to the extent that it becomes glaringly obvious that the UK is going to be so much worse off, we will be told that it is all the fault of foreigners and buerocrats who have got it in for us.

At that point the gutter press will be whipping up even more hatred than they did last year and supporting May to the hilt, even when we are down to the point of "deal or no deal" and if we can't stop it we will have thrown away all our influence in the world and become a tiny insignificant offshore island ruled by a dictator.

I do wonder when TM went straight from fawning over Trump to meet Erdogan in Turkey, did she ask his advice on how to achieve a one party state?

The only way we can hope to call a halt to this madness is to vote Liberal Democrat in as many places as possible, but if you judge that your LibDem candidate has no hope of being elected, vote for the candidate who can stop the Tories, whether it is Labour, Green, NHS or Plaid Cymru.

I was listening to Farron in Edinburgh today and he's sounding more statesmanlike.

He does seem to have grown into the job Ginny, but then people often do. I think the idea of getting someone ready made and perfect is quite a modern phenomenon.
