You dj biased?? Surely not grin

durhamjen Wed 07-Jun-17 23:31:52

Ah, well. So long as it does happen. No immunity as May wasn't an MP when she said it.

I hope lots of the undecided have seen this video.

voxpoliticalonline.com/2017/06/07/labours-last-general-election-2017-campaign-video-and-the-best/

I think it's brilliant. But I am biased.

FarNorth Wed 07-Jun-17 23:25:58

Of course, there'll be no decision on either of those possible breaches of electoral law until well after the election.

durhamjen Wed 07-Jun-17 23:10:29

That's interesting, FarNorth.

Have you seen that the Met are looking into May saying something similar about Abbott?

skwawkbox.org/2017/06/06/met-taking-may-electoral-breach-re-abbott-very-seriously-ge17/

Same reason.

Skwawkbox and Canary are the leftwing news outlets according to Gove, so he must read them, or at least think they are not rubbish.

FarNorth Wed 07-Jun-17 20:51:21

Well, this is the canary so probably rubbish, but I don't think so :

trisher Wed 31-May-17 15:21:56

Oh yggdrassli Please film yourself performing that as a rap and put it on you tube. I'm sure it will go viral in no time grin

I like his policies but …

Here’s a politician who just doesn’t lie

But I can’t vote for Corbyn,

Cos he doesn’t wear a tie.

Here’s a politician who’ll restore the NHS

I would vote for Corbyn

If his beard was not a mess.

Here’s a politician who’ll take back the trains we sold,

Well, I do like his policies,

But I find he’s just too old.

Here’s a politician who’ll swap student loans for grants,

I like that idea,

But he hasn’t got a chance.

Here’s a politician who’ll make rented homes respectable,

I don’t disagree,

It’s a shame he’s unelectable.

He’s honest and he’s true but I’m not going to plead with ya

Knowing that your mind has

Been made up by the media.

My son gave it me, because he thinks I'm thick (he could be right).

"What so many people don't get about the U.S.working class"

Interesting article and you can see the truth of it in our society but I wonder if she comes up with any solution. Are you reading it Daphne? I would be interested to hear more.

durhamjen Mon 29-May-17 21:16:10

Where did you get that from, daphne?
I like Jonathan Portes.

daphnedill Mon 29-May-17 21:10:43

Also just read an article called "What so many people don't get about the U.S.working class", which would equally apply to the UK.

hbr.org/2016/11/what-so-many-people-dont-get-about-the-u-s-working-class

daphnedill Mon 29-May-17 21:08:18

Well, so do I. I'm reading a book called "50 ideas you really need to know about capitalism" by Jonathan Portes.

Portes claims that one of the most successful economies of the last fifty years, Germany, can't conveniently be labelled as left or right. Its defining characteristic is pragmatism, especially since Merkel became Chancellor.

It's just that words such as "communism, "socialism", "trots", "far left" are used so frequently, but they can't really be discussed, unless everyone is clear what they mean. I'm not convinced people are clear. And don't start me on fascism! It must be even more misused than communism.

Jalima1108 Mon 29-May-17 20:17:57

but that is only an opinion .....

Jalima1108 Mon 29-May-17 20:17:39

Perhaps communism is used as an abusive word because we have seen the effects of it over the last few decades.
The same for fascism.

I prefer a happy democratic medium with all its faults.

daphnedill Mon 29-May-17 20:16:17

PS, I agree with you that Corbyn is not and never has been communist.

POGS Mon 29-May-17 20:16:11

Ask yourself if you would like to live in a Communist country such as China, North Korea, Venezuala, Russia.

My response is NO.

daphnedill Mon 29-May-17 20:15:25

yggdrasil

Both China and Russia (and even Cuba) have private ownership. None of them would call themselves communist.

Jalima1108 Mon 29-May-17 20:14:38

and they are, presumably, not suffering the impact of these deprivations themselves.

The loyalists are being armed now so woe betide anyone who protests on the streets because there is no food, no medicine.
Maduro still looks relatively well-fed, however.

daphnedill Mon 29-May-17 20:12:56

But Jalima communism has more often than not been used as derogatory term by detractors. Nobody has explained what they mean by communism, hard-left or leftie, which is surprising because people lob the terms about quite freely. Surely they know exactly what they mean...don't they?

I'm genuinely interested in a proper political discussion, but as only Labour voters are welcome (and I'm not one), I think I'll toddle off elsewhere. Maybe somebody somewhere else can explain what communism means.

whitewave Mon 29-May-17 20:10:21

Marx had very little to say about what a country would look like after the revolution. Don't forget that during the period he was writing there were many utopian ideas around, and this is reflected in his writing. Socialism and communism does differ in Marxist writing. Socialism is seen as the transition of a country between capitalism and communism. But he does not explore either concept in any depth, and their subsequent description largely comes from the way USSR and China have evolved, not I would argue a Marxist concept at all.

POGS Mon 29-May-17 20:03:33

Working out well for the people of Venezuela , no food, no medicine , plenty of corruption and those at the top couldn't care less as long as their communist/socialist ideology survives.
