This forum should be named as the heading.

I don't think any "communist" country has ever decribed itself as communist, but socialist.
Jalima many totalitarian states aren't communist and the ruling parties don't call themselves communist. There is no state in the world today, which is run in the way Marx envisaged.
When you said has ever daphnedill I assumed you were meaning now and in the past although I did reply in the present tense.

And I think your second statement is reiterating exactly what I said - that a state can call itself exactly what it likes.

It does seem strange, however, that communist states preferred to use names such as 'People's Republic' or 'People's Democratic Republic' particularly when they have murdered a proportion of their populations.

Have you seen this, yggdrasil?

Communism, as practiced in the USSR and China, means the State is in total control of all the production and services, and there is no private business at all.
Socialism expects a mixed economy. The state looks after essential industries like water, fuel, education & transport and takes care of the welfare of those in need. Otherwise people can run their own businesses, employ other people, and make a fortune, as long as they pay their fair share of taxes.
We have never had communism here, but for quite a while we had a successful socialist Keynsian economy, until Thatcher changed the rules.
Corbyn is not and never has been a communist of any sort. But Blair and New Labour were only slightly socialist, since he carried on with Thatcher's economics mainly. We are just getting back to the mainstream left now .

Read this evening - labours Big Beasts demand

Who are these big beasts? John McDonald and Rebecca Lang-Baily

My two small terriers are closer to being big beasts than these two

I know that, durhamjen, I posted a couple of political things, was just explaining that I intended to go back to my usual trivia/waffle! grin

As you were, Gladiators!

daphnedill Mon 29-May-17 18:45:40

Jalima many totalitarian states aren't communist and the ruling parties don't call themselves communist. There is no state in the world today, which is run in the way Marx envisaged.

Both communism and socialism are defined as the common ownership of the means of production. Communism was just one way of achieving that.

Communism is one form of socialism, of which there are dozens of different forms.

When people claim that Corbyn is a communist and he wants to turn the Labour Party into a Communist Party, I'm interested in what they actually mean.

Anniebach Mon 29-May-17 18:37:35

I didn't know the Labour Party was communist

Jalima1108 Mon 29-May-17 18:28:41

I suppose a country can call itself what it likes - Socialist, a People's Republic, even People's Democratic Republic, etc but if it is a totalitarian state ruled by the Communist party then in essence it is a Communist country even if they do not describe it as such themselves.

daphnedill Mon 29-May-17 17:57:00

In what way is the Labour Party communist?

daphnedill Mon 29-May-17 17:49:55

Could somebody please explain the difference between communism and socialism?

I always understood that communism is a form of socialism. I don't think any "communist" country has ever decribed itself as communist, but socialist. (Could be wrong)

rosesarered Mon 29-May-17 17:48:46

I agree, no point in evangalising, just putting your own views forward.

Lazigirl Mon 29-May-17 16:15:01

I have strong political views and enjoy the debate on these posts, but feel that it can be counterproductive to try and persuade anyone with strong political opinions to change what they believe, and the more counter arguments they are presented with the more they become entrenched in their views. But hey it's fun trying. smile

Anniebach Mon 29-May-17 16:10:27

I am so cross, I didn't know untill two posters informed me , Harold Wilson isn't leader of the Labour Party ,me when did this happen?

rosesarered Mon 29-May-17 15:53:10

Phoenix ?

durhamjen Mon 29-May-17 15:45:34

It's the politics forum, phoenix!

phoenix Mon 29-May-17 15:42:39

paddyann hopefully I made it clear that I was merely reproducing the letter, I make absolutely no comment on it's content.

Others, of course are perfectly free to do so.

I have my own political opinions, but on this occasion prefer not to put them on here.

I will stick to cats, (not literally, that would be both cruel and inconvenient) blisters and other trivial topics until the majority of political comment subsides.

MetteGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 29-May-17 15:33:15

We're getting a lot of reports about posts on this thread. We would like to keep this discussion going, however, we urge you to refrain from including offensive comments about individuals when posting. If this continues, we may step in. Thank you.

paddyann Mon 29-May-17 15:25:59

pheonix that maybe because the Tories appesr to have no morals ....how else can you explain them rewarding the rich and punishing the poor...it wasn't the nurses,or labourers or shopworkers etc etc etc who casued the crash but its them who are paying for it NOT the rich supporters of the tory party ...whose wealth has increased year on year with the help of the party ...who have mismanaged the economy to the extent of more than doubling the debt they inherited from the previous government...Why do the tory supporters on here have no explanation about where all THAT money has gone ?

Anniebach Mon 29-May-17 15:22:16

And did I asked for your advice on how to vote trisher? No I did not ,

paddyann Mon 29-May-17 15:20:21

well said Trisher the Labour party was much more left wing 50 years ago at that time they called the SNP Tartan Tories, now the SNP ismore left leaning than they are...I dont understand why some people cant see labour is just off centre towards left I grew up in a family where Labour was the party of choice and the Red Flag was sung with gusto ....dont see that happening nowadays

phoenix Mon 29-May-17 15:17:06

I am reproducing a letter from Saturday's DT, I make no comment on the views expressed.

Sir,

Their is a simple explanation for the phenomenon Mr Malia observes.

Rightists think Leftists are misguided; but Leftists, convinced of their intellectual and moral superiority, believe that Rightists are evil.
Patrick Jordan, Glasgow.

trisher Mon 29-May-17 15:03:53

I didn't tell you what to think or how to vote Annie I simply said that you should. And that the Labour Party has a long history of compromise which some of us have done in the past, but which you seem unwilling to do. I still don't understand how the party is now 'communist' last time I looked no-one had proposed bringing back Clause 4 which was certainly a key part of the party you joined.

Anniebach Mon 29-May-17 14:55:27

Trisher, do not tell me what to think and how to vote, and I found your post a personal insult. Now accept this, Corbyn is a liar, a hypocrite and is determined to end the Labour party and bring in a communist party. And I do not need sermons from you on the Labour Party so find some manners and stop being so bloody bossy and ha know it all ok?

durhamjen Mon 29-May-17 14:29:12

Excellent post, trisher.
