Are you watching tonight's tv debate?

There is the leader of the Liberal Democrats, Tim Farron, leader of the Labour party, Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Greens, Caroline Lucas, leader of Plaid Cymru, Leanne Wood, deputy leader of SNP, Angus Robertson, leader of UKIP, Paul Nuttall and someone called Amber Rudd, who seems to be standing in for the leader of the Tories.

What do you make of it?

Sturgeon and Robertson are incredibly articulate, Rudd and May are too, also
Corbyn and McDonnell etc etc.It doesn't mean they won't make the wrong choices, but it does mean they can keep up and explain themselves properly when debating with others in front of a crowd.

durhamjen Wed 31-May-17 22:32:47

Rudd can't pronounce her 'r's properly.

Lynnieg Wed 31-May-17 22:41:39

Amber Rudd's elderly father died on Monday. Mrs May told her that another cabinet member would stand in but Amber chose to carry on. So I imagine her diction is secondary consideration.
But do carry on...

Anniebach Wed 31-May-17 22:47:53

I didn't know she was suffering a bereavement, poor woman

Jalima1108 Wed 31-May-17 22:49:31

djen a speech impediment could be considered a disability and I would not have thought you would be the kind of person to mock a disability.

Where was JC today? - asked those who turned out to see him in Bristol, Swindon etc

Jeremy Corbyn snubs Bristol for TV debate
Corbyn to cancel plans in Swindon and Stroud as well as Bristol

Amber Rudd is never impressive - her performance tonight was par for her usual course

Rigby46 Wed 31-May-17 22:53:45

Oh come on dj that was unworthy of you - there are many many negative things to say about AR that she well and truly deserves.

durhamjen Wed 31-May-17 22:54:42

I wasn't mocking it, Jalima. Roses said that she is incredibly articulate. I was just pointing it out, in the same way that she has talked about Tim Farron.
Not being able to pronounce 'r's properly is often a sign of an upmarket education, rather than a speech impediment.

rosesarered Wed 31-May-17 22:58:46

I was pointing out that all but Farron are articulate speakers.A speech impediment is something completely different.

Chewbacca Wed 31-May-17 23:01:44

Rudd can't pronounce her 'r's' properly .

Cheap shot.

Rigby46 Wed 31-May-17 23:05:48

dj when in a hole......

Tosh!

Anniebach Wed 31-May-17 23:12:23

Picking on a speech impediment ? Shameful

NotTooOld Wed 31-May-17 23:13:27

I didn't watch it all but what I did see was mostly a shouting match. Why is Angus Robertson always angry?

durhamjen Wed 31-May-17 23:15:36

I am partially deaf in one ear and totally deaf in the other.
I could understand everyone but Rudd, because of the way she purses her mouth and pronounces her 'r's.
So I had to put subtitles on so I could understand her.
Anything wrong with saying that?
Any objections?

merlotgran Wed 31-May-17 23:17:44

So an upmarket boarding school lines up pupils and instructs them to speak like Jonathan Woss?

rosesarered Wed 31-May-17 23:21:17

Yes durhamjen there is a lot wrong with that, and you know it.

Chewbacca Wed 31-May-17 23:28:45

I think that's what is referred to as "drip feeding ", isn't it?

Jalima1108 Wed 31-May-17 23:37:33

Anything wrong with saying that?
Yes because it was implied as a criticism of something over which she may not have any control.

A member of our family cannot pronounce her r's properly either.

Jalima1108 Wed 31-May-17 23:39:02

Not being able to pronounce 'r's properly is often a sign of an upmarket education, rather than a speech impediment.

That's rubbish.

Chewbacca Wed 31-May-17 23:44:14

Nor can my granddaughter Jalima . I hate to think that some numpty is going to consider her inarticulate or thick or just not able to speak properly because of it. Can't believe an adult would have made a speech impediment a reason to ridicule someone.

Tegan2 Wed 31-May-17 23:57:24

Well, I was very impressed with Tim Farron tonight and everything he said made perfect sense to me. Why is it ok, by the way, to ridicule how he speaks and yet pounce on someone who points out that others don't have perfect diction?

FarNorth Thu 01-Jun-17 00:14:14

I didn't hear all of tonight's debate but I thought Tim Farron spoke very well and convincingly on a debate a few nights ago.

Well Maybot was clearly having a re-boot so The Hand was sent in instead. Handbot had clearly not been programmed too well as she kept repeating herself, talking about the magic money tree. She is obviously stuck on the Enid Blyton form of politics, but it went over the head of most.

She will also have some explaining to do to the Supreme Leader Maybot as Handbot talked about "My manifesto" - big error!!!

With thanks to John Grace

According to today's Telegraph, Amber Rudds father died just 48 hours before last nights debate so less of the mocking please.
