Awful news, just seen this on the news.
Thoughts with everyone involved including firefighters

daphnedill Thu 15-Jun-17 22:14:10

I hadn't heard that. Britain First is disgusting!

Rigby46 Thu 15-Jun-17 22:19:50

Local authorities are supposed to coordinate emergency planning. K &C seem to have failed spectacularly in this. They are now refusing to answer any questions because 'there's a public enquiry'. Well the first thing Tessie will have to do is find an independent judge and you didn't have much luck with that did you with the child abuse enquiry? There now seems to be an acceptance that not only is this whole thing a huge political issue, but that there's much coming out and to come out that they will not be able to hide and is scandalous. . The whole thing is also predicated upon the huge issue of how we house poorer people and ensure that not only are they housed but that the housing is properly maintained. I also think there is some controlling going on re the release of numbers who have died. Probably for fear of riots - I think it's pretty clear that it's going to reach three figures isn't it?

I'm puzzled about the tale of the fridge which is supposed to have caused this disaster.
How in the name of God did anybody sort through that inferno and decide "Ah, yes, that fridge there is wot done it!"
Me thinks it might be a sop to cover up a possible arson.

Desdemona Thu 15-Jun-17 22:22:12

William and Kate should open Kensington Palace.

Rigby46 Thu 15-Jun-17 22:23:12

Thanks for link dj it would be laughable if it weren't so serious wouldn't it? Re the fridge, even if it's true, it's a red herring.

Rigby46 Thu 15-Jun-17 22:23:43

Ah but bless, they have given a 'donation'

Rigby46 Thu 15-Jun-17 22:29:50

It's going to look great, isn't it, when the magic money tree rains down money on the DUP for NI whilst the poor and dispossessed of GT remain in temporary housing for who knows how long before being bussed out to god knows where far away. Does anyone on here honestly think that they will be treated well, with dignity and respect? Not a chance. I bet K&C can't wait for GT to be demolished so that they can flog the land off to their mates for development.

merlotgran Thu 15-Jun-17 22:33:22

sluttygran, I believe the man who lived in the flat where the fridge caught fire alerted a neighbour and told him what had happened. The neighbour could see the burning fridge through the door.

I can't imagine how that poor man must be feeling.

Rigby46 Thu 15-Jun-17 22:38:17

If he exists, he's probably more upset than the politicians who are responsible and accountable for this put together - they have no shame as is clear from their refusal to answer questions/appear on the media.

Desdemona Thu 15-Jun-17 22:39:04

Well it would Rigby, the people in Grenfell Tower were poor, they didn't matter.

gillybob Thu 15-Jun-17 22:39:42

William and Kate should open Kensington Palace

Oh yeah right Desdemona and that's gonna happen isn't it? What about Buck House for that matter? That's got plenty of unoccupied rooms.

Have they really given a donation? A donation of what? Cash? A property or 10 ? Or Some used romper suits?

Rigby46 Thu 15-Jun-17 22:42:34

gb well I'd like to know what money of her own Katie has to give in the first place. I believe she 'worked' at Jigsaws ( owned by a family friend) for all of three months was it?

Anniebach Thu 15-Jun-17 22:47:08

sluttygran, I hope not arson, it's horrific enough now

gillybob Thu 15-Jun-17 22:49:11

She was made for better things though Rigby a girl like that shouldn't have to do any REAL work. Better just bag herself a prince and be done with,

gillybob Thu 15-Jun-17 22:52:18

Apologies all for last post. No place for that kind of sniping on this thread. Feeling quite ashamed.

durhamjen Thu 15-Jun-17 23:10:02

Do they need an independent judge, Rigby?
Could it not be the DPP?

Welshwife Thu 15-Jun-17 23:10:58

We saw the report that it was started by a fridge and the man packed a suitcase before knocking on a neighbour's door to alert them and say they could not put the fire out. One of the witnesses on the night said his neighbour told him the fridge caught fire.

Rigby46 Thu 15-Jun-17 23:17:49

DPP?

Jalima1108 Thu 15-Jun-17 23:50:13

it occurred to me that the council seems nowhere in sight.
According to the news tonight everyone has been found accommodation although some people have had to be housed in halls on the floor, but the elderly and families with children have been found accommodation.
It was not just the people who did manage to escape who had to be found accommodation, people from nearby blocks were evacuated too I understand.

Jalima1108 Thu 15-Jun-17 23:53:47

but thumbs down to the council who should be sorting out the relief effort, but according to reports, are nowhere to be seen,
I must have heard different reports then, because I heard that the council had sent in specialist staff to look after children who may have lost or been separated from their families.
And see my post above.

durhamjen Thu 15-Jun-17 23:56:18

If this is true, it will definitely be the DPP, Rigby.

Have they really given a donation? A donation of what? Cash?
Yes, I think DH said that they had donated £1 million.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Rigby46 Fri 16-Jun-17 00:01:25

There are a variety of reports re the response of the council - the point about the children is nothing special or out of the ordinary - it would be social services, they are always there for children on their own.The real test of the council will not be tonight or next week but what they do in the longer term re proper rehousing of these people. As a council, their record does not inspire confidence

durhamjen Fri 16-Jun-17 00:06:08

Even Piers Morgan appreciated Corbyn's actions today.

Hmmm!

Some facts from K & C's housing strategy:

Over 8000 households on waiting list

Borough expects to house 500 households a year

Average wait for a 2 bed property 4 years 255 days

Average price of property in borough £1,000,000

Borough accepts that nobody on low/average income afford to rent suitable accommodation.

It's no wonder that the people who have lost their homes are anxious.
