Cliff Edge anyone?

This term gets bandied about in relation to Brexit without any of the consequences attached to it.

I have just done some research/ reading and thought it was time we all had the opportunity to discuss what exactly a "cliff edge Brexit" means and whether it can be taken seriously as a "no deal is better than a bad deal" deal.

So talks have failed and our government decides to go it alone.

It is day one of Britains great adventure

We have no trade deals with the EU or the rest of the world.
The economy goes into recession
We now have in front of us several years of negotiating trade deals both with our potentially biggest customer -Europe and the rest of the World.
Countries like Argentina and others that bear a grudge will block any dealings with the WTO.
Getting exports to Europe will become an absolute nightmare, as even if we have successfully arranged our borders for a post Brexit scenario, Europe has only just begun to get their border controls in place for the flow of goods to and from the UK.
The SE becomes a huge lorry park as good stand waiting to be processed. There is a potential for shortages to occur- particularly in relation to food, as there is only one port in Europe that is set up to deal with this commodity, and that is not yet functioning.
Issues like "country of origin" causes complete chaos for business and everything becomes a bureaucratic nightmare.
Flights are delayed/cancelled until the UK can do its own deals with regard to flight rights.
And of course as we have read only recently, nuclear material will dry up, threatening cancer and other treatment.

Most Labour voters want to remain in the single market.

What an intelligent lotsmile

MaizieD Tue 18-Jul-17 12:23:39

Was that Labour voters or Labour Party members, ww?

The reports I read yesterday said Labour Party members. Which would stand to reason because most of them are young. Not sure about the voters, I live in a Leave area where most of the LP voters want out...

loopyloo Tue 18-Jul-17 12:30:26

Corbyn will want to leave the E U because he would not get his Socialist Policies through as a member. Many Labour voters do not realise this.

maizie members

66%

A further 20% are more stay in than leave the single market

So that's nearly all of usgrin

Moody's the credit agency says that the UK will go into a recession if no agreement is reached.

GillT57 Tue 18-Jul-17 17:40:38

Yes, but they will be dismissed as scaremongering ww, after all what do they know that the average Brexit supporter doesn't?

Primrose65 Tue 18-Jul-17 18:04:40

They knew how to rate all those dodgy mortgage tranches as AAA grin

(Reuters) - Low gas prices and President Barack Obama's high approval ratings are key factors that favor Democrat Hillary Clinton winning the White House in next week's election, according to a model from Moody's Analytics that has accurately predicted the last nine U.S. presidential contests

Just had a phone call from DD. Told today that the company she works for is contracting much of it's production in the UK and moving it to Europe. Just in my DDs site this means approx 400 jobs, and then there are all the other sites in the U.K. She is (fingers crossed) safe but she thinks it very much depends on the licence which at the moment covers the entire EU, but if we become a third country than we will need our own licence which apparently costs squillions and DD is very doubtful whether her company will be willing to go down that road.

The people being made redundant are in all skilll areas from PHDs to shop floor workers.

Kuenssburg - wondered today if No 10 knows what it is doing. This apparent inability to know what it wants this government is paralysing the talks and making it very likely that the talks will crash in the autumn.

I think we sort of knew, didn't we, whitewave?
The only amazing thing is the length of time people have been denying it.

By the way, were you affected by the storms last night? Asking because someone said it was wild in Hove.

durhamjen Wed 19-Jul-17 19:58:42

Fingers crossed for your daughter, by the way.

durhamjen Wed 19-Jul-17 20:01:02

Dominic Cummings called David Davis thick as mince.
Does anyone have a good word to say about him?

whitewave Wed 19-Jul-17 20:12:06

The storms were absolutely tremendous and the rain!!!! We live on the Downs so never any risk of flooding but it was tropical. Didn't get to sleep until about 4am dog did his usual jelly wobble.

I hate Brexit, it is beginning to affect so many people. I think the pharma industries are like the bellwethers and this is simply just the beginning.

DD has friends who were told today they will lose their jobs, it is all so sad ,so worrying and BLOODY UNNECESSARY.

MaizieD Wed 19-Jul-17 20:19:14

No storms in Co. Durham, though thunder is rumbling around now.

Despairing when these Brexit related job losses are reported. What fools 'the people' were...

durhamjen Wed 19-Jul-17 20:21:06

"The people" can still redeem themselves and change their minds.

durhamjen Wed 19-Jul-17 20:29:10

I just went to listen, Maizie, as I couldn't hear any thunder while sitting here. Nothing.
Then as I shut the door the rain started.
The hills look like a scene from Lord of the Rings, with all the mists.

I just despair that we have a government so unfit for purpose and an opposition that is equally bereft of realism. "Open Britain" and "Better United" are just voices in the wilderness.

Even Vince Cable is keeping a low profile and I thought he had more gumption.

Just hope that Brexit falls apart before it is too late.

Road Hauliers Association report on Brexit issues.

60000 people employed as drivers from EU

Port delays will mean breaks in the food supply chain and they don't think that it is appreciated just how fragile the food supply chain is.

The RHA fears massive queues at ports with Customs staff having to inspect lorries and take samples.

30% of all our food comes from Europe and at the moment it is as easy to ship food from say Milan to Edinburgh as it is from Bristol to Aberdeen it is totally seamless and there are no delays.

durhamjen Wed 19-Jul-17 22:28:00

Just read that Citgroup could move 200 jobs to Frankfurt in Brexit shake-up.
They already have an office there with 350 staff.

whitewave Thu 20-Jul-17 07:56:55

In the paper this morning.

Smith Kline have decided not to invest in a new £350 facility in Cumbria. This investment will almost certainly go into Europe.

Please stop this madness

Primrose65 Thu 20-Jul-17 11:18:48

"The company has also decided not to proceed with a previously planned investment to build a biopharmaceutical facility in Ulverston as it no longer needs the additional capacity"

I wouldn't trust what you read in "the paper" if they said it was a Brexit issue. That's just fake news.
