Cliff Edge anyone?

This term gets bandied about in relation to Brexit without any of the consequences attached to it.

I have just done some research/ reading and thought it was time we all had the opportunity to discuss what exactly a "cliff edge Brexit" means and whether it can be taken seriously as a "no deal is better than a bad deal" deal.

So talks have failed and our government decides to go it alone.

It is day one of Britains great adventure

We have no trade deals with the EU or the rest of the world.
The economy goes into recession
We now have in front of us several years of negotiating trade deals both with our potentially biggest customer -Europe and the rest of the World.
Countries like Argentina and others that bear a grudge will block any dealings with the WTO.
Getting exports to Europe will become an absolute nightmare, as even if we have successfully arranged our borders for a post Brexit scenario, Europe has only just begun to get their border controls in place for the flow of goods to and from the UK.
The SE becomes a huge lorry park as good stand waiting to be processed. There is a potential for shortages to occur- particularly in relation to food, as there is only one port in Europe that is set up to deal with this commodity, and that is not yet functioning.
Issues like "country of origin" causes complete chaos for business and everything becomes a bureaucratic nightmare.
Flights are delayed/cancelled until the UK can do its own deals with regard to flight rights.
And of course as we have read only recently, nuclear material will dry up, threatening cancer and other treatment.

Yes, DJ I would like to see it. Ian Hislop spoke very passionately about the subject.

EU citizens living here.

Never mind though, as Germany are still in the EU ( so can talk themselves out of starting any more world wars.)

northeastlabour.eu/i-have-many-worries-about-future From an English student who has lived in France for ten years, and is now studying in Holland.

Lots of questions for you to answer, roses.

Does this resonate with any of you living in Spain or France?

I will leave all the answers ( to things that I have never mentioned) to you durhamj .......life is too short.

durhamjen Mon 31-Jul-17 22:52:01

You mean you have no answers. You are the one who tells us that EU citizens will be okay after Brexit.

MaizieD Mon 31-Jul-17 22:53:06

Germany are still in the EU (so can talk themselves out of starting any more world wars.)

Why the assumption that it would be Germany who'd wish to start a world war?

I have lived with, and worked hard to conquer, post WW2 antipathy to Germans all my life. It's very sad that in some quarters they are clearly perceived as warmongers.

durhamjen Mon 31-Jul-17 22:53:36

None of your leaders have the answers either.
They think life's too short to care about other people, too.

durhamjen Mon 31-Jul-17 22:54:47

Oh for an ignore button.

rosesarered Mon 31-Jul-17 22:56:51

grin I actually said ( ages ago) that you need not worry about your family, who had been working and living in the UK for about 20 years.
What makes you think that EU citizens will be made to leave here?
Shouldn't we also care about UK citizens abroad and how the EU will treat them?

rosesarered Mon 31-Jul-17 22:58:54

Maizie I think you will find that Germany plunged us into the last world war by invading Poland.

rosesarered Mon 31-Jul-17 23:00:25

durham try not reading my posts and I will try not reading yours.

MaizieD Mon 31-Jul-17 23:05:26

I don't actually need a history lesson, roses. I'm well aware of the causes of both WW1 and WW2. I'm also well aware of the causes of many earlier international wars, going back over several centuries.

But why the assumption that if there is to be another world war it will be started by Germany?

suzied Mon 31-Jul-17 23:05:56

Yes, of course, but who started it ...? U.K. Citizens in EU countries will only be used as pawns by ... the U.K. Which country is asking for Brexit? May's proposal is for EU citizens to have second class status - not equality. Why would the EU agree to that ?

durhamjen Mon 31-Jul-17 23:07:06

HOW THE BLOODY HELL DO YOU KNOW. HOW SUPERCILIOUS CAN YOU GET?

If you bothered your little mind and read the wording of the links you would realise that they are written by people born in the UK living abroad. I have even given you big clues to that effect. But no, you just dismiss anybody who doesn't agree with your facile ideas.

Are you aware that May has said that anyone living here who has to go abroad for two years gives up their rights?

Are you aware that EU citizens living here will give up their rights to even elect councillors, despite having paid tax and council tax for all that time?

Are you aware that nearly 50% of those working in our food industry come from the EU, and are going back home?
We don't have enough unemployed to raplace them, according to figures brought out by your precious government.

Of course you are not aware and you don't care.
You just produce stupid little platitudes.

durhamjen Mon 31-Jul-17 23:09:02

Sorry, suzie and Maizie. That wasn't directed at you.

rosesarered Mon 31-Jul-17 23:12:23

Go vent your silly spleen on somebody else durham or better still keep a civil tongue in your head.

By the way, I learnt that from either primrose or Darnsarf, apologies to whichever one didn't use it.

I feel so sad for all the people on these forums panicking. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYqzcqDtL3k
I like people, I want everyone to have a happy and productive life with equal opportunities, but the nonsense I read on this gransnet site makes me dispair.

rosesarered Mon 31-Jul-17 23:22:07

I think that you have already gone over the 'cliff edge' durham ...... a good nights sleep is in order perhaps.

Yes Asarah there is much panicking going on!
