Does anyone regret the choice they made in the referendum now that we are gradually seeing the effects of leaving the EU ?

whitewave Mon 10-Jul-17 08:29:31

lillie you are not alone either, as last time I looked remain lead by a full 8 points, which represents a large amount of people changing their minds.

Despite being told that the EU is full of bureaucrats and we do not have a say the reality once again is the complete opposite. There are more bureaucrats per head of population in the UK then in the whole of the EU. In the EU elections we have proportional representation, which means that every vote really does count and each party has a share of the results. In the UK it is first passed the post, so all those voters who did vote for the other parties are not represented. So I do not have a say in this countries future because I did not vote Tory. How can that be right?

There will be a nightmare of regulation for businesses if we fall out of the single market.

I voted to remain, & was saddened to see how Farage took it upon him self to stoke the flames of division & played the patriotic card especially to the older generation .I do think there should be another vote now that we are beginning to hear the details of what Brexit will really mean for us as a country. I'm sure we would all be able to a accept a second result a lot better if we actually knew that we voted on facts & figures not stirred up emotions & half truths .

Tegan2 Mon 10-Jul-17 11:35:27

I know I'm appalled by what is going on at the moment but I keep thinking that, had the result been a close one in favour of remain, we would now be in a alternative limbo land where UKIP and the handful of Tory MP's who were always anti Europe would be very vocal and the gutter press would be hammering home their racist xenophobic garbage ad infinitum. At least, when it's all done and dusted [and with the result that I pray for] it will be final and we will all have a greater understanding of how things work politicaly.

norose4 Mon 10-Jul-17 11:40:51

Well put Tegan, we will all feel better when it's done & dusted & we can settle down again( well perhaps that a a tad optimistic ?

Tegan2 Mon 10-Jul-17 11:52:52

Haven't heard much from the JCB guy who was very vocal in favour of brexit [along with Dyson] recently. Good to see that Anna Soubry and Chuka [sp] are working together.

If you are one of the 63% of the population who did not vote for brexit, or one of the leavers who have changed their minds, you may be heartened to see this petition being sent to Donald Tusk.

Done and sent it to everyone I can think of!!

Including my mp

devongirl Mon 10-Jul-17 12:25:52

I wholeheartedly support the aims of this petition, ww, but am uncomfortable with

the 63% majority of the British electorate who did not vote for nor wish for "Brexit"

where has this figure come from, is it assuming that all those who didn't vote in the referendum did not support Brexit?

whitewave Mon 10-Jul-17 12:26:59

No it means that they did not vote for Brexit - a nuanced difference smile

Ana Mon 10-Jul-17 12:47:58

What does the 'nor wish for' mean then?

varian Mon 10-Jul-17 12:50:06

Anyone who wished for brexit would have voted leave surely?

Ana Mon 10-Jul-17 13:00:52

Oh, so we just assume that anyone who didn't vote wanted to remain? Maybe they had no idea what they wanted, or couldn't care less, or didn't agree with the referendum and refused to vote on principle - no one knows!

whitewave Mon 10-Jul-17 13:15:53

Latest polls

54.4% remain

45.6% leave

devongirl Mon 10-Jul-17 13:34:01

ww I absoutely agree that we should remain and that the majority now think so - but I have to agree with Ana (for once - we're ususally diametrically opposite!) that it is an unreasonable belief that all leavers voted and only remainers didn't bother.

whitewave Mon 10-Jul-17 13:38:29

I think that is what I said devon

By the way I was born in Plymouth and lived for a while in South Brent , if your name means you are from Devon smile

devongirl Mon 10-Jul-17 13:40:35

It does indeed, ww, but the other end - North Devon, God's own country!

Ana Mon 10-Jul-17 13:41:27

No, it isn't what you said whitewave - but I see you're off on a tangent again...

devongirl Mon 10-Jul-17 13:41:46

I feel you and I are on the same wavelength, maybe shared roots!

Smileless2012 Mon 10-Jul-17 13:49:40

As they didn't vote, it also means they didn't vote to remain.

petra Mon 10-Jul-17 13:49:56

I think a lot of 'brexiters' didn't bother to vote as they thought there was no way we were going to leave.

whitewave Mon 10-Jul-17 13:52:42

devon smile

Just seen this quote from Mark Twain which I think is almost certainly the Brexiters mantra

" it is easier to fool a person, than convince him that he's been fooled"
