Should she have resigned? Was she telling the truth? Did she jump or was she pushed? Is this an example of political correctness gone mad?

Thanks Primrose - I hadn't seen that. Absolutely disgusting and the man ought to be ashamed of himself. It isn't good enough to blame his sense of humour then apologise. Any man who can speak so disrespectfully about women and with such disregard for the damage sex work can cause to women girls, men and boys - well I wouldn't want him as an MP

He should have taken Naz Shar's advice and ' kept his mouth shut'
In my eyes he does have one redeeming feature: he thinks the Labour Party is f****d ( his word) with Corbyn as leader.
I would suggest with his small majority his card is marked.

I've just read that article, primrose and am shocked by what it says about the Labour Party.

I think Jess Phillips nailed it when she spoke about left-wing men being "the absolute worst sexists". And in these northern towns/cities where this dreadful abuse is happening, the Labour Party should be speaking out against it & supporting women like Sarah Champion & Amina Lowe instead of sacking them.

Terrible joke but only that.
The issue of women only carriages was not started by Corbyn or by Labour
In September 2014, Parliamentary Under Secretary for transport Claire Perry MP mentioned a possible revival of the women-only carriages idea during a speech to a fringe event at the Conservative Party conference.[31] In August 2015, Labour leadership candidate Jeremy Corbyn said he would consult on the option of introducing women-only carriages to help reduce harassment.[32]

A 'terrible joke but only that'
To refer to a statement of that kind, from an MP in that way worries me. It's unacceptable for a man in a position of power to have a mindset that enables him to make that kind of comment.
We have other threads discussing the sexual exploitation of vulnerable young people and we have an MP making a 'joke' like that. I'm like Queen Victoria I'm just not amused - at all

trisher Sun 27-Aug-17 20:44:49

There's nothing about young people, sexual preference, or exploitation in the joke. Arguably it is a transaction between 2 adults and one entered into voluntarily. If you see sexual exploitation in it that is your interpretation.

Primrose65 Sun 27-Aug-17 20:45:32

This is nothing to do with women only train carriages trisher. It's about a Labour MP who thinks it's funny to say you get 2 pints of beer, a packet of crisps and a hand job for £12.50 in Barrow. Which is the constituency he represents.

I agree with you Iam64. It's the mindset.

Iam64 Sun 27-Aug-17 20:57:15

Your comment suggests there is something wrong in my concern that sexual exploitation might be part of £12.50 buying a pint 2 packs of crisps and a hand job. You can argue it might be a 'transaction between 2 adults and one entered into voluntarily" but I don't agree with you. My experience of children and adults who have been sexually exploited is one of the many reasons I find this MP's comment unacceptable.

Good for Sarah Champion - in an interview today with the Times she says "I'd rather be called a racist than turn a blind eye to child abuse."
She says she has had massive support from social workers, police and others who are relieved that finally someone is speaking out - they are hoping they can now start to tackle the issue of why it's happening.
I wish I had an MP who was brave enough to challenge the party leadership for the sake of their constituents.
