Sovereignty and 'take back control'

In view of developments in Parliament over the past few days, such as the 'Henry VII' clause in the Repeal Bill and moves to give the government a majority in House of Commons Select committees , I am wondering just what people who voted Leave understand by the concept of 'Sovereignty' and if they are at all worried by the Government's attempts to bypass Parliamentary scrutiny of legislation and amendments to legislation?

The AFD party are going to get seats in the parliament tomorrow without any help from Nigel Farage.

Tegan2 Sat 23-Sept-17 22:10:58

Did he not address their rally a couple of weeks ago? Isn't that 'helping' them?

My meaning was, I don't think NF would have made any difference to the numbers they have already.

Tegan2 Sat 23-Sept-17 22:31:40

But you have to admit that the main person behind UKIP wants a far right Europe to replace the EU. Does that not worry you and makes you question why people like Farage wants to break up the EU?

maryeliza54 Sat 23-Sept-17 22:37:02

Farage did share a platform with this far right party and has publicly endorsed them. I don't think it matters whether his support made any difference, the point is he supports them and that speaks volumes.

Tegan2 Sat 23-Sept-17 22:42:42

Thank goodness his support for le Pen didn't work. Wonder where he'll be troubleshooting next? Totally petty of me, I know, but I've been told he drives a Volvo. Shouldn't he be driving a British car?

There is an argument to say that if Merkel hadn't let over one mil migrants into Germany the ADF wouldn't be gaining seats in parliament.
It's obvious that there are a lot of very unhappy people with this policy, and it's not helping that she has no intention of changing that.

suzied Sat 23-Sept-17 22:51:25

He needs something reliable to drive his French tottie around in...

maryeliza54 Sat 23-Sept-17 22:53:31

It's possible to oppose large scale immigration without indulging in the xenophobic, far right rants of the ADF. I thought Germany had cut down on the number of migrants it was letting in and that she has therefore changed the policy although obviously the ones let in earlier on remain and I can understand that there are issues around that.

I agree about the car but I can't knock that because I have to admit we have 2 Mercedes, but we do have 2 Fords as well.
I will add that 2 of those vehicles are not our every day run abouts

maryeliza54 Sat 23-Sept-17 22:57:19

Which days do you use them then??

MaizieD Sat 23-Sept-17 23:03:00

It appears that not all Brexiteers are happy with May's speech:

It's a long, long thread but you only need to read a few tweets to get the flavour...

I love the idea about the Hobbit House for refugees from Syria in Istanbul.
Fortunately some countries are still making them welcome.

An interesting read for Sunday morning.

Talks of continued immigration in larger numbers if we leave EU - where we CAN limit migration - and do deals with places such as India.

maryeliza54 Sun 24-Sept-17 08:26:58

petra envy of the 37 Ford. Do you take it out much?

There seems to be war breaking out again in the Tory after the Florence truce.

Johnson is clearly on manoeuvres, but I suspect it is more his bid for leadership than putting our country first and worrying about Brexit.

IDS doesn't seem yet to quite understand what Maybot said in Florence, I suppose the penny will drop eventually.

JRM does understand and is furious.

Should make for an interesting conferencegrin

GracesGranMK2 Sun 24-Sept-17 09:26:48

It is interesting Jen but I am not sure about the 'remainers are too reasonable' bit.

I think we always had to have time for reality to set in - you only have to think of the things the leavers put forward as truths which at least some are beginning to realise were not. Things such as 'the EU needs us more than we need them' as if we were stronger than 27 other countries including Germany. The idea that we have a special place where other countries in the EU are concerned - rubbish. How many even bothered to turn up to the speech in Florence where May still thinks she can tell them what to do.

We also needed them to catch up on what the vote was in actuality. It was a binary vote (yes or no) about whether we should leave the EU. There was no vote on whether we should stay in this, that or the other group, part or legal entity.

Time was needed and the paucity of knowledge and capability in this government has - luckily - given us that time.

whitewave Sun 24-Sept-17 09:28:56

The Observer is reporting that in fact Maybot and no doubt numerous other Tories are for a Norwegian solution, but in fact Johnson and I guess other loons scuppered that planned bit if her Florence speech by his Telegraph article.

She hasn't got an awful lot of spine has she? Thatcher she ain't.

The chaos continues

Oh yes, several times a week. Although it's his pride and joy, he's not 'precious' about it.

GracesGranMK2 Sun 24-Sept-17 09:31:45

whitewave, I am not at all surprised. Look at Germany where Merkel has always put the long-term future of her country first - risking her own future and here, where we have a group of the less-than-able putting their own future both before their party and their country.

whitewave Sun 24-Sept-17 09:32:52

Another article in the Observer questions why the BBC keep creating these political monsters like Farage, Johnson and JRM? None of whom have gained any respect from the ROW and in fact quite the opposite.

I have long thought that the BBC is well on the way to becoming irrelevant with regard to political commentary. The young have clearly given up on it.

whitewave Sun 24-Sept-17 09:46:05

Observer - as ever another excellent article by Will Hutton

He outlines the continual lies being peddled by the Brexit hard right,. He calls Brexit a monumental self inflicted wound, delivered by the attempt to build a Thatcherite utopia and global Britain that are undeliverable fantasies.

Hutton shreds the latest ode to Johnson in last weeks Telegraph saying that it was all based on lies, peddled throughout the referendum and now being resurrected for nefarious reasons.

Moody downgraded britains credit rating because of less and less control we will have over our destiny.

There is a wide consensus that we will lose 100bn worth of trade in services and 100bn worth of trade in goods, should we follow the Brexiters vision, leading to a smaller, shrunken and divided Britain
