A quote from an article by Nick Cohen in Saturday's (I think) Guardian

My phone isn't letting me do links - sorry! But try googling it if you are interested.

I didn't say it, Annie. It was a link to a Unite article, about the people getting rid of this Tory government and voting in a Labour one.

"The cuts are so bad that a local government leader warned: “Even if councils stop filling in potholes, maintaining parks, closed all children’s centres, libraries, museums, leisure centres and turned off every street light, they will not have saved enough money to plug the financial black hole they face by 2020”. A remarkable assessment and even more so as it was made by Lord Porter, the Conservative chair of the Local Government Association.

The ultimate solution is to rid ourselves of this god-forsaken Conservative government and replace it with a Labour government. Labour’s current national policy forum report demonstrates the clear red water which exists on local government when it states: “Labour is committed to ensuring local government funding is sustainable for the long term.” "

What they are saying is that in some areas funding has been cut by 60%. The Tories should be punished for that.

Then you quoted UNITE .Jen, no difference . I am surprised you are accepting no vote on brexit, you have certaintly been very vocal on the subject before and since the referendum .

It was said on the news this morning momentum has issued instructions that debate on brexit must be - softly, softly

GracesGranMK2 Mon 25-Sept-17 09:55:26

I see no reason to disbelieve the figures dbDB77. You had me thinking your were querying my figures! I am sure the membership will have something to say if they think something is wrong.

What I do believe is that you are using this rather tenuous argument because you don't agree with what the Labour Party stands for. How about putting a proper discussion together about policy rather than grasping a straws ?

whitewave Mon 25-Sept-17 10:02:57

Good Brexit debate - democracy in action!!!

Wonder what we will hear from the Tory party. Certainly nothing like this.

durhamjen Mon 25-Sept-17 10:11:39

I agree, whitewave.
Real members speaking as well.

GracesGranMK2 Mon 25-Sept-17 10:12:15

The press (and some on here) are just upset that there will be no contentious votes. It seems sensible for Labour Party members to want to keep their powder dry at this stage to me and it is their conference.

As you say whitewave - will the same people be asking this of the Tories next week. Now did I just see a pig fly over? They are not allowed to discuss anything let alone the divisive subject of Brexit. They are just told what to think so it's not going to happen is it.

MaizieD Mon 25-Sept-17 10:12:53

Then you quoted UNITE .Jen, no difference

But Unite quoted a very chilling assessment from the Conservative chair of the LGA

“Even if councils stop filling in potholes, maintaining parks, closed all children’s centres, libraries, museums, leisure centres and turned off every street light, they will not have saved enough money to plug the financial black hole they face by 2020”.

Are Unite meant to say 'Oh that's fine, then' and not propose any action?

whitewave Mon 25-Sept-17 10:20:01

Jewish lady speaking about Palestinian state - good stuff

whitewave Mon 25-Sept-17 10:20:22

Standing ovation for her

Anniebach Mon 25-Sept-17 10:22:14

So a quote of a quote of a quote ,

MaizieD Mon 25-Sept-17 10:31:16

Is the Brexit debate over, then ww?

durhamjen Mon 25-Sept-17 10:32:50

Wouldn't it be better if you concentrated on what was said, Annie, rather than just comment on who on here said what.

It's no wonder people question your socialist credentials.
Don't you supprt unions trying to keep workers jobs?

whitewave Mon 25-Sept-17 10:36:52

maizie no. It is all part of internationalism debate. So people are debating all things international.

Just had a GMB speech about the chaos that will be at Dover post Brexit.

Now we are looking at how unions help those suppressed throughout the world.

John Rule - passionate remainer. Thinks the leadership is steering the right path.

lemongrove Mon 25-Sept-17 10:41:24

I think a lot of people are simply amazed that there will be no Brexit Vote at Conference, and, no matter how it is 'spun' there will be a lot of unhappy Remainers.
There is a hilarious cartoon of a rock solid ( ahem!) Corbyn on the beach, with an M for Momentum running through the rock, in The Guardian today. As it's thought that they are behind the softly softly approach to Brexit.

whitewave Mon 25-Sept-17 10:41:40

Note to BBC - stop switching the camera to someone looking tired every time someone supporting Remain comes onto the stage.

whitewave Mon 25-Sept-17 10:43:29

lemon then you obviously are not politically astute.

I am a remainer and am totally content that there will be no vote, it makes absolute sense

lemongrove Mon 25-Sept-17 10:43:50

Some are doing a very good job of convincing themselves that it's the right thing to do.What they really think privately is a different matter.

whitewave Mon 25-Sept-17 10:46:02

Blimey a mind readergrin

Who knew we had such a person on GN?!

lemongrove Mon 25-Sept-17 10:49:01

Just heard that Corbyn gave a speech to Momentum Conference just down the road from Labour Conference, and that it was mainly very young peiple there, and some old people but no age range inbetween. That Corbyn spouted a lot of Marxist claptrap.Things he believes but can't say at Conference.

whitewave Mon 25-Sept-17 10:49:26

Emily Thornberry now

whitewave Mon 25-Sept-17 10:50:24

Keep her speech in mind and compare and contrast it to Johnsons speech. grin

trisher Mon 25-Sept-17 10:53:23

If you can't criticise the things they are talking about that really matter, like poverty, pay freezes, access to education and the NHS, because you know that they are right and that the situation is appalling and getting worse. Choose something they aren't talking abut and criticise them for not talking about it, even though you know nobody has a clue about what is happening or what is going to happen.

lemongrove Mon 25-Sept-17 10:53:36

Thornberry just doing an embarrassing stand up routine, cringe! Why do they do it? ? Makes them look silly and as if there's nothing important to say.

MaizieD Mon 25-Sept-17 10:55:02

Just heard that Corbyn gave a speech to Momentum Conference

Have you a link? Gossip really doesn't have much validity.
