It has been reported in some of the media that poppies will not be on sale in certain areas of the country. This is not true. The British Legion have published a statement and asked for it to be shared.

If you click on the image it will increase in size so that you can read it.

I dont buy them ,I buy a white poppy and wear it from International peace day until armistice day.It has caused me grief as we live in the area where the nuclear facility is and a lot of the naval personnel are very vocal about it...abusive if truth be told.Freedom of choice is still allowed as far as I'm aware though and thats what I tell them.Peace poppies are not a new thing they've been around for 7 decades or more .

Jalima1108 Tue 24-Oct-17 18:13:37

If RN personnel are indeed abusive to members of the public in the area where they are stationed then that should be reported to the most senior officer together with any evidence which you can substantiate.

That is a very serious accusation.

vampirequeen Tue 24-Oct-17 18:46:02

I agree that you can choose to wear a red, white or no poppy. At different times in my life I have chosen all three options. I posted because certain sections of society have tried to hi jack poppies to cause religious and racial unrest. I felt it was important that people knew that the British Legion is selling all over the country as usual.

If RN personnel are being abusive/threatening/acting inappropriately in any way you should report them to their CO. Even if you can't identify the culprits the CO will issue a warning to everyone on the base. Such behaviour brings the RN into disrepute and will not be tolerated.

Paddyann...DH is an ex-serviceman and he is horrified that you are being abused in this way. He says he hopes you will report these incidents because the perpetrators shouldn't get away with it. This is a free country and naval personnel or any other service personnel are there to protect your freedoms not to deny them.

Jalima1108 Tue 24-Oct-17 19:26:01

I think if any member of the services was found to be abusing a member of the public he or she would be up on a charge pdq.

vampirequeen is correct, they are there to protect your freedoms not to deny them, well said.

I've never come across white poppies, never seen anyone selling them. Are they widely available?

grannyactivist Tue 24-Oct-17 22:31:44

Like paddyann I buy and wear a white peace poppy from September 21st (International Day of Peace) until the launch of the RBL appeal when I switch to a red one. The white poppies can be bought from the peace pledge union. Unlike paddyann I have never been given any abuse even though I also live near a military base. But then it is well known locally that I had a son-in-law who was killed in action in Afghanistan, so it would be a brave person who would dare to tackle me about it.

lemongrove Tue 24-Oct-17 22:38:07

Have never seen white poppies for sale, nor seen anyone wearing them, although a few Gransnetters say ( every year)
That they do so.
I have lived near military bases and have never heard of any problems around poppies, but report them if there is any verbal abuse paddyann

stayanotherday Tue 24-Oct-17 22:41:16

Sorry to hear that Granny and to anybody having hassle. I have a purple poppy for the animals as they were involved. It's good to support causes.

lemongrove Tue 24-Oct-17 22:42:52

I haven’t seen any red poppies for sale as yet.

grannyactivist Tue 24-Oct-17 22:45:16

lemongrove your every year comment made me smile: that would be me I expect. smilewink
Every year I think I'll keep off the comments about virtue signalling/red poppies/white poppies/remembrance/war - the usual threads that appear during November, then, as I did again just now, I remind myself that there are lots of new people who come on to GN each year who haven't heard it all before so I end up commenting in spite of myself.

lemongrove Tue 24-Oct-17 22:53:33

I wasn’t thinking specifically of any one Gransnetter granny activist my memory isn’t that good ?but just that ( as you say) the subject comes up every year.

grannyactivist Tue 24-Oct-17 23:26:02

lemon if you still have a memory at all you're doing better than I am! confused

durhamjen Tue 24-Oct-17 23:50:54

Lots of white poppies seen in York, normally, but it's a Quaker area.
I wear one, too. Just ordered some more for this year, along with some peace pledge postcards and a very interesting book about how we teach children about war and peace.

Are those naval personnel pleased that trump has decided to have his planes on nuclear standby 24/7, paddyann? I am sure they are lining up to go to North Korea.

MesMopTop Wed 25-Oct-17 06:00:16

I also wear the purple poppies alongside the red and the White poppies.

Greyduster Wed 25-Oct-17 08:48:57

Are those naval personnel pleased that trump has decided to have his planes on nuclear standby 24/7, paddyann?. Our service personnel are not warmongers, despite the fact that you would seem to have them labelled so. Only you could make a stupid remark like that dj.

Anniebach Wed 25-Oct-17 09:19:34

Why would NAVAL personnel be pleased ? I have a Godson in the navy , why would he be pleased ?

Not a stupid remark, just a sneering remark about our armed forces.

Such a shame on a thread about remembrance and peace to put the boot in

merlotgran Wed 25-Oct-17 09:30:48

Crass!

Jalima1108 Wed 25-Oct-17 09:40:56

As DH (ex Services) would say 'take no notice, just let such daft remarks go over the top of your head'

Anniebach Wed 25-Oct-17 09:51:48

I wear a white poppy , not this year after reading a certain post from a white poppy wearer , I attend the quakers meeting house and know my friends there would never make such a remark,

durhamjen Wed 25-Oct-17 10:09:47

As trump said to the widow of a soldier killed in Africa, they knew what they were signing up to, didn't they?

What do you think the armed forces are for, if not to fight with whatever weapons are available?

White poppies are for peace, and I've worn them for as long as I've known about them, for over 20 years.
To not wear one because you've been reminded of what the forces are for is childish, in my opinion, but there you are.

The fact that RN forces are being belligerent is not surprising, is it, as that is what they are there for.

Greyduster Wed 25-Oct-17 10:16:06

I’m too shocked to respond to that.

Greyduster Wed 25-Oct-17 10:16:44

Are you on something this morning, jen?
