The Vile Trump

This man has been brutal to a grief stricken young widow whose husband has died in the service of his country .

"He knew what he signed up for"

Does this apply to police officers, firefighters, as well as the armed forces ?

If we read of a person drowning trying to save a life shall we say - they knew what risks they were taking "

When we remember prisoners of war shall we say the same ?

I do hope all US political parties are busy planning who they are going to put forward for the next election.

ElroodFan Thu 26-Oct-17 10:43:56

Trump not highly thought of in Scotland after trying to ride roughshod over local residents, environmental agencies and council over his efforts to build a golf course in the Aberdeenshire area. I think he believed he could do exactly what he liked when he became President.

Fennel Thu 26-Oct-17 10:49:19

I read about that at the time, ElroodFan
He thinks he can do as he likes there because his mother came from one of the Western Isles.
I thought the Scottish govt. were feeble in not standing up to him.

'Does it take a polished career politician to extend condolences ?'

Most people have the ability to do it and a career politician would do it easily. Look at Gordon Brown who was caught out. All flattery and smiles to the electorate but in his car afterwards, scathing and unsympathetic. Such a hypocrite but like many I feel.

Most politicians are complete fakes and I have only ever known two who were in it for the good of the electorate and not the wage packet and perks. I am sure there are more who genuinely want to solve problems for their constituents, but I suspect most are full of sound-bites and all-expenses paid lunches in the finest restaurants. I have little faith in most, sadly.

What you see is what you get with Trump.

I don't think he has any side to him. He remains a wealthy, brash, egotistical man, even as President. He shoots from the hip about all he finds wrong with America, and in it's way his bluntness, although often naive and misplaced, is refreshing. (Refreshing in that most politicians steer clear of controversy, side-step their blunders and have made an art form of never answering pertinent questions.) Trump doesn't think much. He is direct, which can be both a weakness and a strength and one rarely seen in a President.

Trump is right about Fake News though and I am glad he has highlighted the way the media puts a spin on everything. Journalists are now colouring events with their own thoughts and prejudices and this is an extremely dangerous road to go down.

Reporting facts is all we need, and an impartial record of events. That is news.

When reporters have carte blanche to determine whether someone is to be praised or condemned and to add their opinions to events, with their political spin, we are in very, very dangerous territory.

Trump has done us a favour by pointing out you cannot always believe what you hear or see as far as modern media is concerned. A reporter's view of events is not always accurate or impartial and political bias is not helpful or necessary.

durhamjen Thu 26-Oct-17 11:24:41

Trump thinks anything he disagrees with is fake news.

Anyone who doesn't want Pence to take over should look at the Horowitz video.

I agree with you Jess, he'd be fun to have dinner with.

Day6 Thu 26-Oct-17 11:34:53

I agree re Trump DJ, but there really should be concerns at the way the news we now receive is packaged to suit the view of the reporter or TV channel, or paper.

Given we have so many news sources and events are transmitted around the world, to so many people - everyone who has a device with a screen - impartiality should be key.

durhamjen Thu 26-Oct-17 11:49:34

Sorry, but to paraphrase Horowitz, impartiality and trump should not be seen in the same sentence, or paragraph.

humptydumpty Thu 26-Oct-17 12:15:44

The thing is, Day6, that even though I'm sure it's the case that what we here from the media is skewed, what about the output from DT himself and his press secretary? Hardly an example of truth, whole truth and nothing but the truth...

W11girl Thu 26-Oct-17 12:30:07

I wholeheartedly agree with you Day6. The man has no diplomatic training. If we listen to our own politician's from across the parties, the majority have diplomacy down to a fine art, (barring BOJO). If you read between the lines of what they say, it is no different to what Trump would say.

whitewave Thu 26-Oct-17 12:31:23

humpty that’s right.

The media does what the media always does.

But Trump is something else, never in American history have they had to tolerate such a problematic president, whose narcissistic behaviour is barely tolerable in normal times, but in times of threat or severe stress would be very dangerous indeed. Let’s hope there is a plan b in place.

meandashy Thu 26-Oct-17 12:49:02

You can't polish a turd I'm afraid.
He's a horror story. I have zero sympathy for any stick he's getting or any of his supporters.
That poor woman won't be the last person to be hurt by his lack of common decency or understanding.

sarahellenwhitney Thu 26-Oct-17 14:04:20

Another lets hate Trump day. Doesn't take long. Were these his only words to the widow of the deceased serviceman????? ie He knew what he signed up for BUT etc etc etc. Every person who enlists is prepared to die for their country.God help us all if persons who joined up went in believing it was going to be a joy ride.

CardiffJaguar Thu 26-Oct-17 14:34:22

When he was elected I was prepared to wait and see. What I have seen so far is discouraging to say the least and downright bad a lot of the time. But he is what he is and there is nothing we can do except to sympathise with the US population.

There is a danger looming that he will create his own downfall which in turn would put Spence in the hot seat. That could be even worse as Spence knows what to do and how to do it.

Republicans have had to swing for and against in an effort to make the best of it but their party is heading into a dead end it seems. Maybe there will be a split. The only good thing to come out of Trump's election was the defeat of that awful Clinton woman and the behind the scenes she and her dreadful man encourage.

sarahellenwhitney Thu 26-Oct-17 14:48:19

President Trumps contribution were words. Does anyone up in arms as to this contribution give a thought to the actions of others for not just the loss of this serviceman but thousands of other innocent men women children and the new born barely taken their first breath ?
Does hmm President Bush and hmmPrime Minister Blair ring any bells?

Ilovecheese Thu 26-Oct-17 15:00:16

Going back to the original op question.
Do service personnel really know what they are signing up for? Some of them are very young. I've only known 2 people from the armed forces, so this is only anecdotal, but one of them joined the army because they would teach him to drive, and one joined the RAF because they would send him to university.

Diddy1 Thu 26-Oct-17 16:43:54

Dont let me get on my high horse about Mr Trump, he is a total maniac lacking diplomacy and manners, and I agree with Aslemma and Coconut about him being assasinated, and then, "his knowing what he had gone in for" He is a threat to world peace.

loopyloo Thu 26-Oct-17 16:59:09

What is going to be interesting is seeing how they manage to rid of him or failing that, what his end is.
It was great to see all those ex presidents raising money for the hurricane victims.

durhamjen Thu 26-Oct-17 18:54:01

sarahellenwhitney, this is what else he said.

sarahellenwhitney Thu 26-Oct-17 19:15:01

And the carnage goes onsad

quizqueen Thu 26-Oct-17 21:38:30

It's funny (and NOT ha ha) that people like Aslemma seems to dislike prejudice but then proceed to make unsavoury comments about people's appearance and also write about encouraging murder against someone who was elected by his country's citizens but whose opinions she happens to not agree with. I believe at the moment the police are investigating people who put threatening posts online!

One man's truths are another man's lies. There is really no proof on either side of the exact words which were used. Perhaps the widow concerned is a Democrat and if that's the case it probably wouldn't have mattered what Mr Trump had said. Also, she may have been encouraged by the media to criticise him especially as she is black, as was her husband who was killed in active service. I seen reports that other servicemen's families have praised Mr Trump when he visited them . I wonder how many grieving widows Obama phoned personally.

durhamjen Thu 26-Oct-17 21:47:15

www.vanityfair.com/news/2017/10/trump-fallen-soldiers-white-house

Trump needs to just shut up about it, as he just makes things worse for himself as usual.

Anya Thu 26-Oct-17 22:01:41

There is no defending this man. He’s a boor and an embarrassment.

durhamjen Thu 26-Oct-17 23:57:32

Quizqueen, trump said he had proof. Now he appears not to have any. Convenient loss of a tape.

vampirequeen Fri 27-Oct-17 14:29:29

Quizqueen, "One man's truth is another man's lies" ...what does that mean?

Obama phoned widows and families even though Trump said he didn't.

Do you really think that a grieving widow would cause this storm for Trump just because she's black and may be a Democrat? Don't you think she has other things on her mind at the moment? And why, 'especially because she's black?"

Fennel Fri 27-Oct-17 14:53:23

Obama also visited ex army people who had lost limbs in the Afghan war - and there were many of them.
I've seen a photo on another (American) forum.
