The Vile Trump

This man has been brutal to a grief stricken young widow whose husband has died in the service of his country .

"He knew what he signed up for"

Does this apply to police officers, firefighters, as well as the armed forces ?

If we read of a person drowning trying to save a life shall we say - they knew what risks they were taking "

When we remember prisoners of war shall we say the same ?

I'm no supporter of Trump but in his clumping, crude manner to which we are all accustomed by now, he was actually speaking a fundamental truth. For far too long young men and women have been lured into a military career with the promise of (as another poster as said) free driving lessons..... what 17 year old would turn that down....? a catering course (walk straight into a job as a chef on discharge from military service) and the same for mechanics and all the other apprenticeships on offer with accommodation and a mess? What emphasis is given in those initial recruitment interviews that the recruit could end his career as a paraplegic (probably, having been taught to drive for free, blown up by a roadside explosive device by someone who wants to kill them) or worse killed by a bullet or a bomb by someone with the same intention.
Recruits should be aware of these risks, but how many are? Their parents and partners must be aware surely? Or are they blinded by the recruiting officers and their golden promises? I would move heaven and earth to dissuade a child or grandchild of mine to 'take the Queen's shilling'.

What was upsetting was that trump phoned the widow when she was in a car on her way to get her husband's body, and they wouldn't let her see him.
That's why the democratic politician was with her, as she was a friend of the family.

Of course anyone going into the military knows there is a risk but it's not something they dwell on because it would drive them insane.

I'm sure all army spouses are also aware of the risks but they can't dwell on them either.

The widow didn't need reminding of that when she was on her way to try to see her husband's body.

willsmadam You say he was speaking a fundamental truth but then you go on to suggest that many young people joining the armed forces are unaware of what they are signing up for. I agree with you but Trump reportedly said the opposite - "He knew what he was signing up for".

Trump, other presidents and high profile politicians, and many other "middle class" Americans were able, on all manner of health grounds, to resist being drafted. In my view, he and they, should feel pretty uncomfortable making any comment or offering any sort of commiserations in the first place.

Much as I dislike Trump and his view of the world, the suggestion that it would be preferable if he could be assassinated is, I feel, quite wrong. Apart from the fact that it would be an illegal act of murder, it could quite easily spark internal violence and even a civil war, which could draw other regions of the world into the ensuing mess.

Cor, he is getting rattled isn’t he? Interestingly the Russians that are involved have also been in contact with Farage I have been reading, and of course there has been a constant questioning over how Banks was able to bankroll UKIP and Brexit?

The noose is tightening .

Well said, Harrison Ford.

Well said.

Someone (sorry a high ranking Republican but I can't remember his name) has suggested that Trump uses his presidential power to disband the FBI then there could be no investigation into him/his family/his financial backers and the Russians.

loopyloo Tue 07-Nov-17 09:33:54

Was this why the records about Kennedy's death were released in the hope it would discredit the FBI?

vampirequeen Tue 07-Nov-17 11:10:06

I'm sure that was the reason. They were due to be released but the President had the right to block release. I think he hoped there would be CIA/FBI collusion.

Have you noticed that Melania is looking happier? She was actually smiling in some of the pics at the beginning of the current tour. I can't think why.

vampirequeen Tue 07-Nov-17 17:53:10

Living in hope maybe. She wasn't too chuffed when Trump was already away and shaking hands before she'd even got out of the car. He is so inconsiderate and rude to her.

Reminds of the Mrs Merton line, "What first attracted you to the millionaire....."

We should be careful what we wish for. They don't have by-elections in the USA. If Trump goes before his time, the Vice-President steps in, then if he goes, there is an established order of politicians who get to be President next. Apparently all the ones in the current queue, including Mike Pence, are right-wing Republicans who have ideas which are even worse that Trump's (he's so erratic that now and then he seems to agree with the Democrats' ideas!) and we would be at as much risk of war and general mayhem. Also the position of women would be as bad or worse.

durhamjen Fri 17-Nov-17 14:21:43

Mike Pence will become president, but there will be no vice president. That's the way it works.
Has it ever happened that both presidents in one session have been impeached or died or assassinated?
I can remeber looking through the lists of presidents, and seeing gaps for vice presidents, but not for presidents.
