McCarthyism is alive and well in the UK

I have just seen the Fails front pageshock

Is this designed to intimidate academic freedom? The thought police are looming large and it is disgraceful assault on our universities.

Academic freedom in this country has always been gold standard. Is the Fail threatening this alongside freedom of expression?

Whitewave
You have often posted that news in the 'Fail' is fake news, but you believe this ?
I suppose it suits your agenda to believe it.

whitewave Thu 26-Oct-17 13:30:44

And your point? What is there for me to believe?

Baggs Thu 26-Oct-17 13:35:13

First question: what is "Fails"? Could you provide a link to the page you mention, please? Just so I know what you're talking about smile

whitewave Thu 26-Oct-17 13:36:56

No I can’t because I’m useless. The Daily Mail front page is what I’m talking about.

Baggs Thu 26-Oct-17 13:37:39

Thanks. I'll have a look.

Baggs Thu 26-Oct-17 13:42:23

Had a look at online version. Can't find any McCarthyism in today's edition. A few words about what alerted you to McCarthyism would probably help smile

whitewave Thu 26-Oct-17 13:50:27

I saw it in twitter and is entitled “ your starter for ten, why is every oxbridge head a leftie”

This is surrounded by photos of oxbridge heads with a paragraph about each one.

Remember the shocking headline about the judges? Along the same lines.

I doubt whether they will get anywhere with it - the academics pride their integrity as do the judges. Something that if clearly a closed book to the Fail.

whitewave Thu 26-Oct-17 13:51:04

Of course it could be an inside page smile

Baggs Thu 26-Oct-17 14:04:49

OK, I think I found it. Just a repeat of what has been said (using various data sources) about the 'characterisitcs' of referendum voters all along—and which, I suspect, you agree with—that people with high levels of education tended, statistically, to vote Remain.

Shrug.

whitewave Thu 26-Oct-17 14:10:06

So why have they picked “leftie academics”? There is more to their agenda than statistics and voting intentions. This is about intimidation, just as the Tory who quickly backtracked did.

Are you sure you have found the correct page?

I think quite a few on their list would proudly call themselves lefties. I doubt many of them would be happy with 'academic' though.

petra Thu 26-Oct-17 14:54:03

I wonder what the BBC or Channel 4 would have to say if all these posts were held by Tories ?

Primrose65 Thu 26-Oct-17 15:01:26

Sorry - that link isn't going to work. It's on pg 7 of the Mail and lists the heads of various Oxbridge colleges.

ALAN RUSBRIDGER, 63 Principal of Lady Margaret Hall
HELENA KENNEDY, 67 Principal of Mansfield College
ROGER MOSEY, 59 Master of Selwyn College
JACKIE ASHLEY, 63 President of Lucy Cavendish College
WILL HUTTON, 67 Principal of Hertford College

You get the idea.

A suggestion by one of the universities was that if the MP, Chris Heaton-Harris wanted to find out what was being taught, he could pay £9000 a year to find out.

(and what is this obsession with all newspapers in printing a persons age)

Baggs Thu 26-Oct-17 15:34:43

Another suggestion was that he could read the course prospectuses.

Jalima1108 Thu 26-Oct-17 16:30:59

Is Jackie Ashley the same Jackie Ashley, daughter of Jack Ashley, wife of Andrew Marr?

Sorry, a red herring, no comment on the article as I haven't seen it, just curious.

Jalima1108 Thu 26-Oct-17 16:32:36

Sorry, Jackie Ashley, 63.
Wife of Andrew Marr, 58

Jalima1108 Thu 26-Oct-17 16:34:04

The same obsession that makes them print the value of people's homes, presumably ilovecheese

So and so, 71, emerged from his £750,000 detached house and said .....

whitewave Thu 26-Oct-17 18:09:41

In furtherance of their witchhunt the Fail asked people to shop anyone who they considered anti-Brexit.

Apparently it has spectacularly tbackfired according to the Spectator

Jalima1108 Thu 26-Oct-17 18:39:27

Oh dear

Can't see that either 'side' is right though, the Mail's sensationalist reporting and the university lecturers who are allegedly (according to students and parents of students) trying to force their own political viewpoint on students.

Surely one of the aims of a university education is to encourage students to research, explore their options and make up their own minds on issues?
Surely the role of a national newspaper is to report the news and allow their readers to make up their own minds on issues?

I am trying to take a balanced view here.e

Anniebach Thu 26-Oct-17 18:51:32

Oxford has 38 colleges, and five Principals are named

suzied Thu 26-Oct-17 18:57:54

It sounds like a bit of a witch hunt- let’s out those remainder universities who are daring to voice the heresy of challenging the cult of Brextreemism. Populism has always had a fear of intellectuals, as if knowledge and questioning challenges their contradictory beliefs.

grumppa Thu 26-Oct-17 19:17:28

Add on 31 Cambridge colleges, Anniebach. Two of the ones listed are Cambridge. I heard it said this week that Alan Rusbridger, having nearly bankrupted The Guardian, is doing his best to bankrupt Lady Margaret Hall.

More seriously, if the Mail could only find five college heads to pillory out of 69, its case is rather undermined. And identifying lefties with remainers is too simplistic by half.

Primrose65 Thu 26-Oct-17 19:22:03

I think there were 12 in the article Annie - but if I cut and paste too much, there are floods of posts about copywrite.

There seems to have been several articles in the Mail today about universities and they're all being discussed here.
