More Brexit lunacy

£490 million wasted spent on changing the colour of our passports. Which we could have done at any time in the last 30 years. Burgundy wasn't obligatory; not every EU country has a burgundy passport.

How many more £millions is this futile Brexit exercise going to cost the UK?

Somewhat ironic that the new blue is very similar to the colour of the EU flag...

durhamjen Sat 30-Dec-17 16:43:27

Stick one over it with superglue, Tegan. That'll serve them right.

Tegan2 Sat 30-Dec-17 17:01:53

They could reach it from the pavement [alas].It was varnished down [after the previous one was removed] so they must have struggled to get it off. Didn't have time to replace it properly but, in a couple of weeks time it will be joined by a few friends wink...

durhamjen Sat 30-Dec-17 17:10:30

That's the spirit, Tegan.

Interested to read that the top civil servants are tearing their hair out with this government.

I quite understand. The brextremists are asking the impossible of the civil servants because they - the brextremists - have no understanding about what they are asking. They are refusing to listen to advise and caution or indeed expertise in this head long descent into Brexit tyranny and certain collapse.

A Kent Tory MP came onto the local news complaining that France was no spending any money are appear to have any plans to upgrade their customs post facing the UK.grin

What an utter idiot. France doesn’t want Brexit, didn’t vote for it and never wanted to spend tax payers money on something they have no budget for.

durhamjen Sun 31-Dec-17 13:59:41

Typical Tory MP, though, expecting others to help them out of a spot of bother they had never foreseen and pick up the tab.
I presume any French customs post will be in France after we leave. No need for the French to make it easy for those who wanted control of their own borders again.

whitewave Sun 31-Dec-17 14:04:15

For us to continue with the present flow of goods at the same pace we need France to invest in a much higher level of infrastructure and officers. It ain’t going to happen very quickly is it? Why should they? That is why the Tories are desperate to turn Kent into a massive lorry park, they can sit there whilst waiting to be able to enter France.

jura2 Sun 31-Dec-17 14:43:42

Ah well, don't be so dramatic - at least t'other way round Dad's Army will be keeping a beady eye sad (honestly, you really could NOT EVER make this stuff up ...)

jura2 Sun 31-Dec-17 14:45:14

When the French decide to go in slow mode, or on strike ... they will create havoc and massive losses... and turn Kent into a giant car park sad

suzied Sun 31-Dec-17 15:01:17

Heard a customs officer on the radio saying there were cuts being made in the border force, sometimes those on duty at key times - late at night etc are those with only 2 weeks training who are on temporary contracts. Gives one a great deal of confidence.

durhamjen Sun 31-Dec-17 15:29:23

Is it a privatised border force, run by Atos or someone equally reliable?
Haven't time to find out myself. Off to my son's for New Year's Eve.
Fortunately the one within walking distance.

Happy New Year to you all.

Happy New Year to you all too.

I’m hosting New Year’s Eve this year, so beef and a chicken in the oven, table set and fizz in fridge. I’m in the quiet period with everything done and just waiting.

Back to the future.

Huffington post reporting that Fox or indeed any of the Brexit ministers cannot name a single country who has expressed a wish to pursue a trade deal with the U.K. after Brexit

varian Mon 01-Jan-18 19:14:23

The Ozzies think we're bonkers. Their main trading partners are China and other countries in SE Asia. Ours are our neighbours in Europe - obviously we want the closest possible relationship with them which means REMAINING in the EU - obviously!!!

Jalima1108 Mon 01-Jan-18 19:21:46

We did have a good trading relationship with Australia but abandoned them in favour of the EU so it is not surprising that they looked for other countries with which to trade.

Jalima1108 Mon 01-Jan-18 19:22:20

Aussies think we're bonkers anyway grin

lemongrove Mon 01-Jan-18 19:27:15

Varian that ship has sailed.

I see no reason that we can’t trade with the EU and anybody else anyway, and yes Jalima we did abandon many countries to trade with the EU.However, trading partners do change over the years.

varian Mon 01-Jan-18 19:49:09

The ship may have sailed but surely when it becomes obvious that it is on the wrong course and headed into a hurricane, then a responsible captain and crew would change course and head back to the safe harbour.

lemongrove Mon 01-Jan-18 19:52:15

The EU a safe harbour? grinI think not.

petra Mon 01-Jan-18 19:52:45

Perhaps we could turn that statement round and get the huffington post to name a country that wont trade with the uk.

lemongrove Mon 01-Jan-18 19:52:50

Trading with them is one thing, being a part of it is another.

Jalima1108 Mon 01-Jan-18 19:57:22

Sometimes it is necessary to ride out the storm at sea rather than attempt to get into port.
Attempting to get back into a port could prove to be more dangerous and you could end up on the rocks.

GracesGranMK2 Mon 01-Jan-18 20:18:46

The ship has not yet left the harbour. It has only just cast off the ropes. If a storm is seen ahead it's crew will decide not to leave the safety they have. Also no one has costed the journey or planned the route and the crew may mutiny at any time deciding the ship next door will give them a better life and is far safer.

They may still decide to go to sea but nothing else, including the route and destination are yet decided. And, there is even a chance that discovery that there is no gold to be found and the captain and officers are completely untrustworthy and do not know how to sail the boat may mean that they will never set sail at all.

Graces gran your post made me laugh but suspect I should be weeping. Whatever have we got ourselves into!
