It is not given to me to start a threads on politics, I don't believe I have ever contributed to one either.
However I cannot let pass the comment from a conservative councillor currently skiing in the USA who wants the homeless and rough sleepers cleared from the streets of
Windsor before the wedding in May.
God forbid that visitors here to see an obscene and ostentatious picture of wealth and privelage should be confronted by the "have nots" of our society.

May tells fibs.

Another heartening story about someone helping the homeless.

Windsor have done a lot to reduce peoples need to sleep rough, it was 35 until a couple of years ago and it now stands at 8, so the Council there have worked at it.
Beggars go to where there is money and tourists who will hand it over.
All charities who help the homeless say please give money to us to help them, not give money in the street.
There are plenty of beggars who are not on their uppers but make a good living out of it.

whitewave Fri 05-Jan-18 18:56:35

I’m surprised that HMRC aren’t following these people up if the living is so good.

Are they the undeserving poor in your world lemon

lemongrove Fri 05-Jan-18 19:18:24

Such a shame you have to constantly indulge in personal remarks whitewave
Stick to the subject in hand.

whitewave Fri 05-Jan-18 19:27:12

What personal remark would that be lemon?

durhamjen Fri 05-Jan-18 21:23:50

Some good responses here about the homeless in Windsor.

Someone wonders how many of them are ex-military.

Once again May has proved that she follows rather than leads.

The question I would ask is ‘ would they move them for any other wedding ?’

Anniebach Sat 06-Jan-18 09:51:04

Would any other wedding draw the same number of people?

lemongrove Sat 06-Jan-18 09:54:38

The answer ginny is no, but this is a huge public event and will generate even more tourism than normal.
I suspect it’s not the eight rough sleepers they are worried about but all the extra beggars that will make a beeline for Windsor that day.
Nothing can be done about that really, unless they are causing an obstruction or aggressively begging.
Actually if I was a tourist I would be more worried about the high number of pickpockets likely to be buzzing around.

Anniebach Sat 06-Jan-18 10:21:07

Seems now all those begging on the streets are homeless and all homeless are victims. Was the homeless man who stole from victims of the Manchester terrorist attack a victim?

This hysteria defending all the begging on the streets is doing as much damage to the homeless as that man has done

whitewave Sat 06-Jan-18 10:34:57

There is no hysteria. I simply recognise that where there is poverty there is also crime and victims.

If you want to look at where these sort of government policies that cut welfare to the bone, look at America where in some cities poverty is at its worse and there is a murder every two hours and the poor die for lack of health care and welfare assistance. Is that the sort of society you want?

I prefer the Scandinavian model say for example Denmark where homelessness only represents something like 0.2% of the population and resultant crime is minimal.

I cannot see how social cleansing does anything but give out the message that these “beggars” who pray on innocent victims reflects so many policies in the past in various European countries, resulting in disaster.

Anniebach Sat 06-Jan-18 12:34:49

There has always been some form of social cleansing.

In Bromley , Kent a wall was built between council house estate and private houses .

Travellers are driven from sites because they do live as locals do.

Caledonai14 Sat 06-Jan-18 13:50:45

All kinds of private and public bodies will be falling over themselves to give gifts to the Royal couple. It'd be great if they announced that money should be gifted, instead, to local charities, say for example Food Banks, Forces Charities, Homeless Shelters.

When Prince Harry's dad married his late mum, one of the councils in my area considered giving them the gift of opening a much-needed specialist nursery, but voted instead for an expensive painting.

Perhaps the council responsible for Windsor could lead the way in showing that, like the Royal Family, they have moved with the times and turn this into a positive story showing the caring face of Britain.

And in the long gaps on TV on the day, why don't we ask the eight homeless people in Windsor to tell their stories (sound only to preserve their anonymity and dignity unless they wish otherwise) and broadcast them in the really boring bits when even the highly-paid commentators are struggling for something new to say about thousands spent on hats and flowers?

Anniebach Sat 06-Jan-18 14:14:50

Many will switch on to watch a wedding not a party political broadcast and this would happen if the homeless were interviewed, politicians would leap on it.

The two people getting married are not responsible for the homeless.

pearl79 Sat 06-Jan-18 16:14:57

when 'ordinary' people marry they often have a 'list', to avoid the dreadful possibility of receiving seven toasters, whereas 'royals' just open up a museum to display their unused gifts.
why don't this modern couple write a list, perhaps starting with countrywide banquets for EVERYONE on the day and donations to charities genuinely dealing with the problems that beset many of our troubled society and sometimes lead to homelessness issues?

Anniebach Sat 06-Jan-18 16:29:33

A list would be asking for a gift , they would be attacked for this

durhamjen Sat 06-Jan-18 16:40:15

But Harry cares for homeless ex-servicemen.

The number of homeless in the country is as great as the population of Newcastle, so I heard today.

Some people's socialism appears to have gone walkabout again.

Anniebach Sat 06-Jan-18 16:47:47

Some people stick with socialism other choose to move further left

Bridgeit Sat 06-Jan-18 17:06:39

We cannot not be who we are,no matter who we are, even if we didn't have a Royal family in this country we would still have inequality, I don't have any answers for how that could ever be put right, but we do at least have a Royal family who love them or hate them ,they do try to do their bit . If we were to get rid of them all, we as individuals would still be who we are with the same circumstances , they do at least provide employment & bringing in tourists. I for one am glad I am who I am & not one of them! If each of us did our own little bit to help someone in our own areas perhaps that would be of more use than just being critical .

Anniebach Sat 06-Jan-18 17:09:41

I agree Bridgeit

Bridgeit Sat 06-Jan-18 17:12:23

Thank you Annibach
