H and M and the small boy modelling.

Over the past couple of days there has been quite a lot of media comment and photos showing a small black boy of about six modelling an H and M top with a slogan something like 'Smartest monkey in the jungle'. This seems to have caused uproar, and an apology from H and M. Interestingly the boy's mother has posted a comment to the effect that she is not in the least annoyed and people should 'Get over it'. My first thought on reading the initial article was - who is making a link between a black child and a monkey? Certainly not H and M, and this thought is seemingly only in the minds of those who are so 'outraged'. The mother seems to feel that this kind of fuss is not necessary, and how refreshing; the fight against real racism can be diluted by endless complaints that seem to spring from people looking for something to be offended by - do others think that this is the case here?

No-one would want to see the abuse you mention, mostly, and it's awful to think that something so apparently innocent could be used as justification/excuse for such behaviour. What's saddest is that even things that aren't racist, like that hoody on that wee boy, are effectively censored out of fear. That sort of suppression, what gadabout describes too, is what is truly bad about the whole thing.

They didn't like it in South Africa.

Baggs, I don't see the criticism of the hoody on the little by as censorship because of fear. I see it more as sensitivity to the fact that black, ethnic, minority people have been subjected to racism throughout history.

I think it was done cynically by H&M ( either that or they are naive idiots)
What black or mixed race child would want to wear the hoodie with that slogan and what parents would ever buy it for them?
Both words monkey and jungle on one garment!
We have to be realistic about the world we live in.
Football matches in Italy Spain and France show the huge amount of racism there ( a bit better here) but still some.
This is a hoodie only a white child could get away with
wearing and I think H&M know it.
The Mother of the boy will have a contract with them and will feel obliged to play it down.
