Just heard that he has cancelled.
It will be interesting to hear more as the story unravels.
All because he thinks Obama got it wrong when he sold the embassy building in Grosvenor Square and he doesn't like the new building.
As my grandad would have said "Aye, right!"

Should everyone who protests about a certain State visit ( many of them dissidents originating from that country) have to go to every other protest as well? Rather a strange logic.

maryeliza54 Fri 12-Jan-18 16:35:33

The US embassy was never sold and for one simple reason - it belongs to the Duke of Westminster. DT was either lying or didn’t have the facts ( as he should have done before he said anything). And I love the way several posters on here are saying what about protests about other leaders? RTFT - I posted a link and others have posted about the protests that did happen. Some of you just wade in with criticisms when you haven’t ascertained the facts - ooohhhh who does that remind me of?

suzie I gave up expecting any logic at all from most of the right wing supporters on here

I am not a fan of Trump but we do need to remain friends with the USA whether we like it or not. It is in our interest. Absence speaks louder than words, so I won’t be on the
Streets protesting.

Ditto to the left wing supporters! Marieliza64

American ambassador in London has resigned saying he no longer can work with the Toddler-in-chief

whitewave Fri 12-Jan-18 18:13:15

Not London!! Panama doh!!

Jalima1108 Fri 12-Jan-18 18:20:58

I think it would be much better to absolutely clear the streets if /when he arrives here. He clearly thrives on attention so ignoring him would wound his ghastly pride much more.
I think what Jane10 said is most sensible and, as travelsafar says, it would save on the cost of security.

Are there any? or, if there are, how would you know? confused

Many posters seem to believe in the logical and pragmatic approach.

Jalima1108 Fri 12-Jan-18 18:22:46

Well, wouldn't that be a first, checking the facts before twittering off.

Britain well known for being diplomatic, with Johnson as foreign secretary?

David Miliband talking about it on Channel 4 news at the moment.
Makes some excellent points.

Eloethan Fri 12-Jan-18 19:25:48

sarahwhitney I can see why you are so keen on defending Trump - your turn of phrase and manners are so similar.

The "special relationship" seemed to consist of us rubber stamping political and military decisions made in the US. This country wasn't even consulted when the US invaded Grenada, a former British colony and Commonwealth nation, in 1983. That's how much respect the US had for the UK.

durhamjen Fri 12-Jan-18 19:37:19

In fact, having watched Miliband and Krishnan Guru-Murthy, I imagine Miliband will soon be coming back to UK, and Guru-Murthy will not be allowed into USA.

Barmeyoldbat Fri 12-Jan-18 20:14:07

So those that believe a protest is mob rule, does that also apply to the protest about NHS cuts etc. or are we talking about selective protests?

GracesGranMK2 Fri 12-Jan-18 20:16:17

American ambassador in London has resigned saying he no longer can work with the Toddler-in-chief

That seems a bit hard on Toddlers whitewave, although I can see why he compares them. The man is just a bigoted ignoramus but people - in this country too - still think he's great. We are living in very strange times.

Eloethan I would really rather we gave up on the special relationship with the USA than gave up on Europe. It is another split within the country. There seem to be those who are pro the culture of the USA (as they see it) and anti the culture of Europe and those who seem to be pro the culture of the of Europe (as they see it) and anti the culture of the USA and, in many cases, never the twain shall meet.

Jalima1108 Fri 12-Jan-18 20:21:03

I think we need both, though, and we would have maintained a relationship with the USA through the EU which may not have been 'special' but it is, I think, essential. The USA has a longstanding relationship with the EU.

eeas.europa.eu/delegations/united-states-america/27291/united-states-and-eu_en

However, that is academic now.

GracesGranMK2 Fri 12-Jan-18 20:21:18

I did not realise how many had such uninteresting lives that what would appear to be a highlight of these lives, zimmer frames at the ready, was to demonstrate in the street/s at an alleged visit of an American president.

That is just extremely rude to people who hold a different view to you - and quite unnecessarily personal to other members of this forum.

I would be very happy to stand on the Mall, if he came, and simply turn my back on him. The man lacks mental capacity and holds the future of the world in his hands. The USA needs to know how we - those of us who do - feel about him making the world more dangerous and unstable.

I found reading this quite interesting. I don't have a zimmer frame; in fact, thinking about it, I haven't seen one for ages.
Must be the hills in this county.

Jalima1108 Fri 12-Jan-18 20:27:37

I had one when I broke my ankle, it has gone back to the A&E and I don't particularly want to see it again.

ninny Fri 12-Jan-18 20:36:34

How pathetic all the lefty loonies protesting but not a word when their beloved EU, France and Germany welcomed him with open arms.

Jalima1108 Fri 12-Jan-18 20:49:32

Pragmatism ninny rather than a sincere welcome I would think.

GracesGranMK2 Fri 12-Jan-18 20:59:10

How pathetic all the lefty loonies protesting ....

What is it with the decent into personal abuse of other GNetters? Is that really how you talk to people ninny?

GracesGranMK2 Fri 12-Jan-18 21:00:30

descent - obviously not decent.

Chewbacca Fri 12-Jan-18 21:22:00

I've often wondered about that GracesgranMK2.
