Just heard that he has cancelled.
It will be interesting to hear more as the story unravels.
All because he thinks Obama got it wrong when he sold the embassy building in Grosvenor Square and he doesn't like the new building.
As my grandad would have said "Aye, right!"

I wonder why trump thinks that Norwegians will flock to America, too?
Fewer than 100 a year want to be naturalised now.

What makes people say 'I couldn't believe anything to be wronger than Trump" is that the proud mission statements of the past proclaimed the US to be the land of the free for the huddled and oppressed masses, welcomed as they poured in from their "shitty countries" to the place of equality and opportunity where what counted was not where you came from but where you were going and how hard you worked to get there. Not that it always completely lived up to those high ideals, but the ideal was there.

Trump is working hard to pull those ideals down into mediocrity and worse, to bring the US into line with the countries who practise all the things Maddy mentions, the nepotism, the lies, the corruption, the cynical use of political expedients for private gain and power, the rejection of the experience of the judiciary, the increase in dependence upon the military, the jettisoning of all the improvements in the living conditions and dignity of his citizens that his predecessors had slowly achieved.

It is the contrast between the image of "America the golden" and reality.
"For fairest things turn foulest by their deeds.
Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds"

Jalima- not sure about demonstrations at Davos.

Totally different situation- Davos is in a small alpine valley - chosen because if means security is relatively easy as access is very limited. Police and customs will be able to control all that go in and out of there- be it by road, train or helicopter.

Agree with Jane10 - totally ignoring him would be best way to deal with him.

durhamjen Fri 12-Jan-18 21:36:44

You'd think that those who support him would have had second thoughts as soon as the nepotism started, wouldn't you, considering that was the reason they did not vote for the Clinton family.

Graesgran if the cap fits.

Trump is doing really well.
Is that how he managed to go bankrupt so often?

GracesGranMK2 Fri 12-Jan-18 22:04:10

I've often wondered about that GracesgranMK2.

I suggest the next time you notice personal abuse you comment on it in the same measured way then Chewbacca. You never know, it may stop.

GracesGranMK2 Fri 12-Jan-18 22:07:59

Graesgran if the cap fits (sic)

If you are suggesting I have made personally abused any member or members ninny then please point out to me where I have done that and I will apologise. I doubt that, being unable to do so, you will find it in you to do the same.

GracesGranMK2 Fri 12-Jan-18 22:08:20

made

Chewbacca Fri 12-Jan-18 22:28:33

I doubt it GracesgranMK2, but thanks for the helpful tip. grin

GracesGranMK2 Fri 12-Jan-18 22:42:13

You're welcome.

Jalima1108 Fri 12-Jan-18 23:14:08

Yes, rather quieter than London so he will probably be whisked off to Davos without anyone catching a glimpse of his bouffant.

ninny Sat 13-Jan-18 07:24:20

My comment if the cap fits was in reference to looney lefties. Perhaps I should have said bigoted left leaning, no condemnation of the EU or Macron, Merkel and others who have courted Trump, we are still part of the EU so why is he welcome there and not there.

ninny Sat 13-Jan-18 07:32:05

Typos. why is he welcome there and not here.

OldMeg Sat 13-Jan-18 08:01:47

You speak In clichés ninny - don’t you have any words to express your opinion that are less perjorative and hackneyed?

It is quite obvious that Macron and Merkel have not courted’ Trump as both treated him with a noticeable amount of polite coldness and disdain even in public. Indeed in one well-publicised incident Macron put him down, subtly but quite clearly, in public. They met him as befitted his position of President, nothing more.

This is about the world, and the public, not having to accept the politics of hatred and division but being free to express their contempt for Trump. This is not about the American people or the office of President. This is about the ‘man’.

whitewave Sat 13-Jan-18 08:14:08

I think with the latest racial rhetoric this will certainly play out internationally not least in the African continent and beyond.

Trump is contributing to the changing attitude towards America from one of being a beacon of hope and democracy to one of condemnation and distrust.

maddy629 Sat 13-Jan-18 08:23:51

I for one am delighted that this evil man is not coming here,I hope he never sets foot on British soil.

OldMeg Sat 13-Jan-18 08:36:45

He’s a pathological liar. He’s trying to deny he used the term ‘shithole countries’ but two senators in the room confirm that’s exactly what he did say.

Anniebach Sat 13-Jan-18 09:06:16

Does the UK not need America ?

durhamjen Sat 13-Jan-18 09:21:50

Unless you happen to come from Africa, or a Muslim country.

durhamjen Sat 13-Jan-18 09:25:09

Said about slavery. Applies equally to what you know about trump.

GracesGranMK2 Sat 13-Jan-18 09:29:01

You appear to be hiding behind grouping people on this forum in order to call them names ninny.

I am to the left of centre in my views - are you saying I am 'loony', 'bigoted', or in somehow wrong/a bad person because you believe I do not 'condemn' those you choose to.

I have no objection to you putting any argument forward that contradicts my views but I do object to the puerile name calling and feel sure it does not follow the GN guidelines.

lemongrove Sat 13-Jan-18 09:34:45

hmm grin Be afraid ninny be very afraid.

eazybee Sat 13-Jan-18 09:39:58

I have just seen a picture of the new American embassy!!
I wouldn't want to visit it either.
What an eyesore.
Just a pity he couldn't have let us know earlier.

Luckygirl Sat 13-Jan-18 09:48:24

Ah, but it is all fine - he has god on his side.

How he can claim to embrace Christianity I do not know. That American brand of religion makes me want to heave.

He makes outrageous nauseating statements then finishes his speech with some reference to god. Pitiful.
