Guess how much the Queen's alarm clock costs.

You'll never guess so I'll tell you. She is woken every morning by a piper who plays for 15 minutes. The piper is a Pipe Major paid by the British army and seconded to the Royal Household. A Pipe Major isn't technically a major but a sergeant so looking at the pay scale for 2017/18 last year the Pipe Major cost £33490 to £47895 depending on where he is on the scale.

My daughter was a member of the Scots Guards and a volinist. She was also the leader of the orchestra and played at banquets, investitures, garden parties and in addition led a quartet which played at the Queens private dinner parties. She was also a soloist at the Edinburgh Festival and various foreign locations including Australia. She played during state visits for Putin, Clinton, Obama and various other heads of state and worked at various locations during the Queens Jubilee. When marching or on duty outside Buckingham Palace, Windsor or in the Scottish castles she played the saxophone. This was her main job, although of course she was also a serving soldier who had frequent fitness tests, target practice, etc. and could be called on to fight although (I am very grateful) this never happened. So basically that is what she was paid for by the Army, although if someone wanted to hire the orchestra privately a fee was charged and she would receive payment from that. She lived in "quarters" with her husband (also a soldier) and paid rent, and when at work in the barracks had a subsidised canteen. Her salary was not amazing. I believe the Piper is engaged to work on the same basis, and playing first thing in the morning for the Queen is merely PART of his daily duties - not ALL of them. So no reason to get excited Vampirequeen!

Again why make it personal. I don't think it's a good use of public money. That's my opinion. I haven't criticised or been rude to anyone who has disagreed with me.

Sorry! I didn't think I had made it personal. Just thought you'd like a flavour of how Army musicians are used. My apologies?

Waste of money, get an alarm clock. I like the royal family and tradition, but cuts have to be made across the board.

All these mean responses surprised me more than the actual post!

I heard about this years ago but thought it was at Balmoral.
I like to hear the pipes!

I also read about this years ago and don't begrudge HM one bit. If she enjoys being woken up by bagpipes then good luck to her. Obviously it's not his only duties.
