Annie you should know "standing by your principles" if they are contrary to the party line also involves not taking office or expecting to be a party spokesperson. Owen Smith isn't the first person to be sacked for speaking out of turn and I don't suppose he'll be the last. When Corbyn spoke out he did so from the back benches, well Smith can do the same.

I have also seen it reported as Smith being sacked for breaking ranks on Shadow Cabinet collective responsibility. As did Chris Williamson, a Corbyn ally, who was 'asked to resign' a while ago.

When Corbyn 'rebelled' he was not in the shadow cabinet and was not bound by the convention of cabinet collective responsibility.

I read the Atlantic article. I would never expect a US publication to regard any stance slightly to the left of Genghis Kahn as anything other than dangerously communist. I'd comment further on the spin but I have to go out...

Apparently she called for a GE for people to express their opinion of Brexit rather than a referendum. I can't vouch for this as I'm really not that interested in searching the entrails of the LP.

Well put Trisher. I think, having actually read Smith's article, that he has a good point to make but he is a seasoned politician and must have known exactly what he was doing. He can go on putting forward his argument, as you say, from the back benches. There are quite a few who agree with him across parliament. If he wanted to persuade his party however, this was not the way to do it.

It doesn't make either him or Corbyn right or wrong, good or bad people. It is just how party politics works.

Practically all of my twitter feed is condemning Corbyn for 'sacking a brave rebel' but just because lots of people say it it doesn't make it correct.

No he hasn't. He has just taken "a different line" from the one you would like people to believe Corbyn took.

I would have thought calling for a General Election was very much the LP "line".

gg maize trish you are all right in your posts. Corbyn did what Theresa May has never yet been able to do which is to operate from a position of strength. As I pointed out from another thread, I worry about Brexit. But Adonis has given me cheer, all is very much not lost.

And being told to get off doorsteps because of Corbyn's anti-semitism here in London.

So the shadow party line must be adhered to by members of the shadow cabinet ? How times change.

It is totally clear to me that Corbyn is NOT anti-semite- at all. Like many of us, he is totally against the illegal rape and pillage of Palestine and Palestinians.
I actually like and admire Corbyn- been to many rallies in the past where he was present- although I never met him as such.

But NO, I will not vote for him, be a member any longer, and send financial or any other support. What happened yesterday with Owen Smith was the last straw - I have written to him to explain this.

Brexit is the key to everything else- jobs, living conditions for the poorest, the NHS and Social Services. I will NOT support a clearly pro-Brexit, anti EU so called 'opposition' leader.

As lemon mentioned, if opposing Corbyn and all he stands for is 'far right' response, then most of the Labour Party are extreme right or neoliberal!

We are watching the Labour Party being taken over by the militant far left and Corbyn is leading that movement, ensuring he is surrounded by Momentum appointed senior Labour party figures.

The party within the party is slowly conducting a purge of Labour members who do not adopt or support far left views. To oppose that frightening reality is not a far right response, much as you'd like to think it is.
