First Jews and now this. Labour has definitely become the nasty party, embracing hard left racist thugs.

What is going on when Corbyn's supporters abuse the new home secretary because of the colour of his skin?

Javid asked Corbyn to denounce them, but the leader of the Labour party kept his seat.

"Sajid Javid demanded Jeremy Corbyn denounce his supporters for branding him a 'coconut' and 'Uncle Tom' since his appointment as Home Secretary,"

"Since being made Home Secretary on Monday, Mr Javid has been subject to a torrent of racist abuse - which appears to come from left-wingers who profess support for Mr Corbyn."

'I was talking about members of the hard left that have created a hostile environment in their own party and people that welcome my appointment by calling me a 'coconut' and an 'Uncle Tom'.

'If that's something (Mr Corbyn) thinks is wrong, why doesn't he come to the dispatch box right now and denounce them?' "

Corbyn didn't. No surprises there.

As terrible as the treatment of the Windrush Generation is, what does it have to do with the racial abuse directed at Sajid Javid?

Bringing illegal immigration into any discussion about the Windrush Generation scandal only serves to muddy the waters. They aren't here illegally.

Instead of calling for TM's resignation wouldn't it be better to allow her and her government to right the wrongs that have had such a devastating effect on these peoples lives?

The term 'coconut' was often used by some to abuse non whites who for example, joined the police force when non whites were being openly recruited.

Addressing an Asian as “people like you” in the middle of a rant about illegal immigrants is not racist?

mh - is that not a racist thought? Assuming that someone meant it to be a racist comment rather than one directed at journalists?

If someone was upset with the paparazzi and shouted at them 'I am sick of people like you' and one was black would that be a racist comment or one directed against the paparazzi?

bmacca Thu 03-May-18 20:11:39

Jalima, it is viewed as an offensive/derogatory term by black people, as meaning someone who is regarded as having adopted the attitudes, values, and behavior thought to be characteristic of middle-class white society, at the expense of his or her ethnic heritage.

Baggs Thu 03-May-18 20:17:00

Why do you think KGM's race was what Gale was referring to rather than his profession, mh?

If you read the transcript critically, race is quite clearly irrelevant.

Jalima1108 Thu 03-May-18 20:17:13

That sounds very old-fashioned indeed.

Anyway, he is still in touch with his heritage and his family.

bmacca Thu 03-May-18 20:19:07

I'm not sure what Gale meant when he said "people like you" but it would seem that the presenter perceived the comment as racist which is I guess why he picked him up on it.

Jalima1108 Thu 03-May-18 20:23:16

behavior thought to be characteristic of middle-class white society, at the expense of his or her ethnic heritage.
But class is very apparent in Indian culture, Arab culture etc. Have Indigenous Australians sold out now because they are MPs, in public life?
Should people be concerned about those things or regard race as irrelevant unless someone is overtly and nastily racist and bigoted? Should it be the first assumption if one criticises someone of a different race, or is it being used as a first defence when, in fact, other issues may be being referred to and criticised?

mostlyharmless Thu 03-May-18 20:29:59

I don’t blame KGM for seeing as racist! Gale’s whole rant was racist in tone and equated immigrants with illegal. Sajid Javid agrees.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid has condemned Tory MPs who conflate the Windrush scandal with illegal immigration.

It came after two Tory MPs interrupted Labour’s Diane Abbott in the first three minutes of her speech on the scandal, to ask questions about illegal immigration.

Jalima1108 Thu 03-May-18 20:31:57

Where was the Speaker?

bmacca Thu 03-May-18 20:35:20

Jalima, I'm not sure that the people who use offensive/derogatory/racist language really give it much thought - they just seem to lash out. It must be very hurtful though for whoever it is being directed at and of course very extreme views can lead to things like the murder of Jo Cox. I assume that Javid was upset by being called a "coconut" because it was one of the messages he highlighted

bmacca Thu 03-May-18 20:36:57

Javid was reporting what was on his twitter, no one in the house used derogatory language towards him so the Speaker wasn't involved

bmacca Thu 03-May-18 20:38:19

Sorry Jalima I now realise you were responding to mostly harmless, not my post

Jalima1108 Thu 03-May-18 20:38:39

Javid was reporting what was on his twitter, no one in the house used derogatory language towards him so the Speaker wasn't involved
I meant when Diane Abbott was trying to speak in the H of C.

Baggs Thu 03-May-18 20:46:00

Conflating the Windrush scandal with illegal immigration is certainly wrong.

Grandad1943 Thu 03-May-18 20:50:18

The Concervative party has been treating the Windrush generation as illegal immigrants since this government came to power with its "targets" and found these persons fitted as soft pickings into those targets.

Undoubtedly it accounts for why Gales whole attitude in the interview was aggressive, abusive and offhanded, as these Tories realize they have now been "caught out" in their profoundly racist policies.

lemongrove Thu 03-May-18 20:59:29

The ‘people like you’ obviously meant annoying tv presenters!
If he chose to take it as a racial insult, seems he is twisting it to make a sensationalist interview.
It wouldn't be the first time that a tv presenter thinks the world revolves around them.

lemongrove Thu 03-May-18 21:01:08

Corbyn, as ever, is as useless as a chocolate teapot, why anyone expects more of him is a mystery!

mostlyharmless Thu 03-May-18 21:03:10

Oh dear lemongrove.

lemongrove Thu 03-May-18 21:07:46

Sorry mostly grin I know you are a JC supporter, but you just have to take it on the chin I’m afraid.

Grandad1943 Thu 03-May-18 21:12:02

Corbyn has people in and outside the Labour party that have made racist comments. Theresa May is leader of a Conservative party that carries out profoundly racist actions that wreck people's lives.

I believe we all realise which of the above two parties has the biggest problem within their ranks

lemongrove Thu 03-May-18 21:15:27

You mean that you do Grandad....it’s not the same thing at all.

trisher Thu 03-May-18 21:37:13

If you don't realise the racism that is inherent in the parties of the right like the Conservative party lemongrove perhaps you need to consider carefully your own attitudes. Under this Conservative government traumatised women have been imprisoned in Yarls Wood Detention Centre, www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/nov/15/yarls-wood-chief-inspector-prisons-report-rape-torture
Women in the centre have been sexually assaulted by the staff there Many of them have been released later without any charge being made.
The tragedies of the Windrush generation are well documented.
Then there is the failure to adequately support EU nationals living here,
The fact that the Tories chose to align themselves with UKIP speaks for itself.
It isn't racism which makes foolish and ridiculous tweets. It is racism that runs so deep and that is so much a part of the party's culture it will probably nevr be eradicated.

paddyann Thu 03-May-18 21:40:55

Grandad1943 you should be informed that the tory suppoters on here think Mrs May and her cohorts walk on water ..they cheer her actions in deporting people of different races and colour...its all about getting back the "sovereignty" they always had and the green and pleasant land of fantasies that they insist existed in their youth .

lemongrove Thu 03-May-18 21:42:13

Perhaps you should think about your own attitudes Trisher if you don’t realise how much racism and antisemitisn is now to be found in the new kinder Labour Party.

lemongrove Thu 03-May-18 21:44:48

Perhaps posters should also be informed of your penchant for writing fantasy land comments paddyann.
