Conservatives and Pendle Council

I think it is disgusting that the Conservatives reinstated a councillor previously suspended over a racist joke in order to take control of Pendle council. The joke was disgusting and her assertion that she shared it by mistake unacceptable. That someone would even dare to send her such a joke says so much about her. You can read about it here. Just one warning the joke is completely foul and you may prefer not to read it www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/tories-win-pendle-reinstating-councillor-12481278

I did too annie, but like you I stand corrected!!

Grandad1943 Tue 08-May-18 19:44:05

nigglynellie, as i stated to Lemongrove Britain has very much moved on in regard to equality and shared domestic responsibility. I have not stated that is the case in all situations, but it is very different from only two decades ago and still moving forward with far more parents having to work long hours in employment outside the home.

Jalima1108, perhaps the electorate of Pendle believed that were voting for an independent candidate if they were not aware of her background. They were then disenfranchised when this racist women was invited to return to the Tory party, which she immediately accepted.

Neither her or that party considered those that had elected her as an independent, which comprehensively demonstrates how low the modern Conservative party have sunk in its endless quest for power at any cost and linked personal monetary gain.

By the way Jalima1108 I am dictating this on a smartphone using voice recognition while my wife is driving us back from our wonderful five days in Devon. You do not need an expensive devise to carry that out as I am using my wife's Huawei Honor 9 running Android 7.0 for this posting and also posting in a separate thread on the forum.

Not an expensive device as compared to many and as long as any phone has between two and four GBS ram and running Android 5.0 and above, voice dictation is very easy to learn if you care to try.

You will find that can post from anywhere, even travelling at 70mph on the motorway. That is an advancement in Britain also, and can be carried out in equality by both sexes.

Back to work tomorrow, so will be taking a break from GN

Jalima1108 Tue 08-May-18 19:44:30

I am sure she was!

Jalima1108 Tue 08-May-18 19:44:40

and still is I hope

Jalima As I understand it this woman was not up for election this year. Lots of councils elect a proportion of their members each year.
Having been suspended by the local Tory group last year she didn’t resign but carried on as an independent member. So no one voted for her this year, she was already there and just rejoined the Tory fold.

MaizieD Tue 08-May-18 20:16:22

True, Jalima. That thought had crossed my mind but somehow I don't think that a unique pocket of racism exists.

lemongrove Tue 08-May-18 22:07:26

Jalimagrin
I think I may have ruffled an old bird’s feathers on another thread!

MawBroon Tue 08-May-18 22:17:20

hmm
Letting the little woman loose with a technical device?
Goodness that is something. Although I never saw this sort of thing being gender-specific, myself......
Does sexual equality have no bounds?
hmm

lemongrove Tue 08-May-18 22:21:07

Yes, Maw that bit made me grin as well.

Anniebach Tue 08-May-18 22:29:50

I didn’t know I could use a tecnical device, it must be true because the poster has explain he has legal secretaries and asks them to check things for him

Jalima1108 Tue 08-May-18 22:49:35

and not all of us have those complicated phones .....

Letting the little woman loose with a technical device?

It's not the technical issues that are the problem, it's the eyesight. And the fat fingers.
I like a large screen grin
and preferably a mouse

Jalima1108 Tue 08-May-18 22:53:04

hmm
no, not really.

Jalima1108 Tue 08-May-18 22:55:35

thank you for the explanation winterwhite

I used to hate dictating into those dictaphone thingies, preferred to write things down.
Just call me old-fashioned smile

illtellhim Wed 09-May-18 09:34:50

Thanks for the link trisher, I've made an image and put it on mobile although I've changed the word brown to immigrant. Just doing what everyone else does. smile

MaizieD regarding the 'pocket of racism' perhaps we should consider who sent the joke to the councillor in the first place. Obviously someone she was friends with on Facebook who thought it was OK to send it to their friends, so perhaps pockets of racism do exist. I find the people you have links with do tend to post things you have connections with. In my case sometimes political stuff (left wing naturally), sometimes linked to charity stuff and sometimes local history things. I know no-one I know would post such a joke and it seems no-one on GN approves, but such racism is still there.

Jalima1108 Wed 09-May-18 12:45:39

I think I must have a fairly eclectic mix of friends and family as some post things in support of Corbyn and one or two post things in favour of Trump and Brexit.

But I have never seen anyone post anything like that and I would report it to FB if I did.

There is always the 'hide post button and do not let me see anything from this site again' which should work.

MawBroon Wed 09-May-18 12:53:05

Is there any other sort of dictation? hmm

I suspect we should not bother our pretty little heads with it.

I am off to check with my legal secretary before I post anything else.

Thank you for that Grandad
Presumably there will also be detailed instructions shortly on how many beans make five or perhaps the correct procedure for sucking eggs.

Anniebach Wed 09-May-18 13:48:51

We females learn so much here now , how lucky we are that a male has time to share /talk down to us

nigglynellie Wed 09-May-18 14:00:06

annie, you're right, it's a blessed relief and we are indeed fortunate!!! grin

Anniebach Wed 09-May-18 14:38:04

niggly, we can now ask for advice on which party to vote for, Libs or Conservatives ?

Day6 Wed 09-May-18 15:14:08

I cannot think of any posters on GN that would not say that the councillor had re tweeted a vile and racist so called joke, no matter what their politics

Indeed lemon. Which Labour MPs/politicians defended the abuse directed at Sajid Javid?

You cannot defend the indefensible.

This happened a year ago, the woman was taken to task over it and has had diversity training since.
It doesn't make it alright as the 'joke' was disgusting. It is as well the Labour Party supporting Daily Mirror making a story of it! (I added that because several posters hold up their hands in horror and scream "Daily Mail" if it is mentioned. grin

However, it is likely that there are several obtuse politicians in local and central government who either fail to be aware of racial abuse, haven't a clue about diversity and choose to look the other way and not denounce it when they are told about it. It is worrying.

Corbyn is the expert. Is Ken Livingstone back in the fold yet?

Anniebach Wed 09-May-18 15:31:49

Livingstone isn’t in or out, been suspended but still allowed to campaign for Corbyn

Day6 Wed 09-May-18 15:47:52

However, when the anti-semitism allegations began several weeks ago the Labour party supporters on this forum I referred to in my earlier posting stated continuously with veracity and frequency their condemnation of Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour party

Dear oh dear Grandad - did you not appreciate that Corbyn's behaviour has been filling column inches of the NATIONAL newspapers and online blogs and articles for weeks - nay, months?

Of course there has been comment. Lots of it on Gransnet and elsewhere, for a long, long time. Corbyn is controversial, (as are his Marxist pals and racist supporters) and that's putting it politely.
