The GMB Union has the bright idea to take water from a Welsh reservoir ,which supplies Birmingham, to London and parts of the south east.

Many have not forgotten what happened to Capel Celyn .

Smileless2012 Fri 08-Jun-18 19:24:19

Excuse my ignorance Annie but what did happen to Capel Celyn?

Belgravian Fri 08-Jun-18 19:31:32

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capel_Celyn

I'd never heard of it so am reading up on it.

I am English but now live in Wales.

We do get more rain here than my parents do in England but it does seem strange to think of a reservoir here being used to supply England.

par for the course, they took coastal waters from Scotland the night before devolution so that now our coastal waters only begin at St Andrews!! That means coast off everywhere from the border up is included in English coastal waters .....strangely those very waters are the base of some very lucrative oil rigs !!..We will have them returned to us when we get Independence .International law is on OUR side ,shame Englands government didn't understand that .

A bomb! Very high emotions at the time.

Ilovecheese Fri 08-Jun-18 19:37:04

They seem to be just thinking around ways to prevent a shortage of water in the South.

Belgravian Fri 08-Jun-18 19:38:56

Crikey, I'm surprised it was t turned into a Hollywood film! I don't mean that trivially just that it's amazing how they went on to become teachers etc

Is this a failure on the part of the useless Thames Water?

M0nica Fri 08-Jun-18 20:06:43

Thames Water want to drown 2/3 of the parish I live in under a reservoir with an area of 2 square miles. The reservoir is not in a valley but flat land and will have an embankment 85 feet high round it.

The land is a flood plain that takes the water that would otherwise flood our village. The flood relief scheme is on the opposite side of the reservoir to the village confused

NfkDumpling Fri 08-Jun-18 20:07:50

Staying out of this one. Our water in Norfolk comes from rivers and aquifers. No shortage here. Yet.

NfkDumpling Fri 08-Jun-18 20:09:19

But MOnica the people who’ve worked all this out have university degrees and everything. You can’t expect common sense as well.

Anniebach Fri 08-Jun-18 20:28:05

What happened to the people of Capel Celyn was really cruel. They were told they loved ones buried there could be dug up an interred elsewhere, no matter many generations had lived and died there. So Liverpool drinks water which covers the graves of a community.

I joined the protests up there , no use was it.

Liverpool apologised in 2005

So if England needs water there is bottled Welsh water they can buy ?

Anniebach Fri 08-Jun-18 20:29:48

Ilovecheese, surely you have valleys in the south, flood one

M0nica Fri 08-Jun-18 21:23:38

Oh dear, so do I. I wondered what my problem was grin

maryeliza54 Fri 08-Jun-18 21:43:49

Well I'm absolutely fed up with Welsh people coming to England on holiday and using up our sunshine. Oh come on seriously - the long term issues of water shortages in the SE have to be addressed and it should be being thought through now. The GMB which has since apologised was just tying this in with some other water developments. Whats ridiculous is the plethora of water companies which gets in the way of longterm planning for what is a basic necessity.

gillybob Fri 08-Jun-18 22:07:14

Oh Annie the Northern reservoirs have been topping up Southern supplies for a long time. A few years ago they were sending water tankers by road from Keilder to the South. I don’t begrudge the South “my” water , I’m sure they would do the same for us if the situation was reversed. hmm

Anniebach Fri 08-Jun-18 22:14:44

I too am sure they would Gilly , South Wales would give to North Wales and North Wales to South Wales

maryeliza54 Fri 08-Jun-18 22:20:16

OH for goodness sake ab- this is water we are talking about not a shortage of pizzas. And of course Welsh Water will sell water to England - as its a not for profit company it should be a fair price without profits going to the shareholders of the foreign owned companies.

Anniebach Fri 08-Jun-18 22:24:34

Maryeliza, you may be as you claim , intellectually superior but sadly you were robbed of a sense of humour ?

maryeliza54 Fri 08-Jun-18 22:33:07

ab CBA

Eglantine21 Fri 08-Jun-18 22:41:18

CBA?

lemongrove Fri 08-Jun-18 22:43:12

You have so much rain Annie ......we want some.grin
We also want some Welsh lamb and Welsh gold, is there anything else we can pillage? Poems and songs? Hills?
It wouldn't be fair if you kept it all.?

Eglantine21 Fri 08-Jun-18 22:45:32

It’s not a shortage of water but a surfeit of people that’s the problem.

My idea is to send the extra people to Wales grin

NfkDumpling Sat 09-Jun-18 07:34:33

I blame London.

Baggs Sat 09-Jun-18 07:45:08

Are people wanting a hard border for Wales now?
