According to the BBC News last night, children of Mexican migrants are being separated from their parents and kept in cages

On Tuesday, the UN called on the US to "immediately halt" the separations.
The UN Human Rights Office's spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani criticised the policy on Tuesday and said that several hundred children, some as young as one, appeared to have been affected.

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has defended separating migrant children from their parents at the US border.

New York Times reported that about 700 children - including 100 under the age of four - had been separated from the adults they were travelling with after entering the US.

JaneD3
There are 3 special, secret camps for babies and very young children according to Radio 4. That is even more appalling.
That sounds very sinister - will they 'disappear' to be adopted by American families, like those Haitian children who were supposedly being helped by American Christian groups

quizqueen has a point. It's a pity that African countries and Central American countries can't put their houses in order (ie men stop pointless fighting). The people can't just decant North and hope they'll be accommodated.
Note that's the bigger picture.
Children should not be separated from their parents.

Countries such as the USA and those in Europe have struggled over the centuries to make their countries successful
Well, of course, although what the Native Americans think of this is another issue entirely.
And why is the USA successful? Because of all its immigrants.

Yes, I agree these would-be immigrants need to be processed through the immigration system - but they should be kept together as families and not criminalised.

Trump presumably wants to send a very strong message to others who may be considering entering the country illegally.

Chewbacca Wed 20-Jun-18 18:30:19

But the very strong message is being heard across the world as one of America's inhumanity and cruelty; not strength.

varian Wed 20-Jun-18 18:40:12

I am glad to hear that Trump has backed down.

Thank you Melania.

Deedaa Wed 20-Jun-18 18:45:17

But seeking asylum is not illegal. No reason at all to separate them from their children while they wait to be processed.

The comments from Trump supporters are depressing. Any suggestion of backing down is seen as betraying them.

varian Wed 20-Jun-18 18:58:37

These Trump supporters are devoid of compassion. How else could he ever have been elected?

jura2 Wed 20-Jun-18 19:36:40

surely Mrs May should cancel his trip to UK, and the Queen refuse to meet him on those grounds. Otherwise it makes them, and us all, accessories to concentration camps for children.

Grandad1943 Wed 20-Jun-18 20:05:38

Being reported on Google that people are threatening to resign from Fox News as they are being told to defend Trump in this disgusting matter.

Jalima1108 Wed 20-Jun-18 20:10:32

But seeking asylum is not illegal. I think Trump and his cronies declared that illegal immigration was a criminal offence a couple or so weeks ago Deedaa - see my post above.

Jalima1108 Wed 20-Jun-18 20:13:33

Thanks varian
However, we wait and see

Grandad1943 Wed 20-Jun-18 20:38:59

America through Trumps childrens concentration camps seems determined to bring the hate of the free world down on it.

At the same time Russia gathers praise after praise from the world's media for the way it is organizing, handling and running the World cup and the great atmosphere surrounding it.

We seem to be living through very much changing times.

Very clever tactics Grandad1943 smile
Organised, trained thuggery in 2016, nowhere to be seen this time?

Grandad1943 Wed 20-Jun-18 21:06:19

Yes very much agree with that Jalima1108. All the Brits out there are saying how good the police and security has been towards them.

Also very friendly Russian people especially in Volgograd (formally Stalingrad) where they were told to thoroughly enjoy themselves, but do not touch our war memorials in any disrespectful way.

As you say Jalima1108 very different from the last European Championships and just at the time that America is the demon in the world's eyes

Putin must be over the moon with it all.

Jalima1108 Wed 20-Jun-18 21:08:46

he does need some 'good press'

Grandad1943 Wed 20-Jun-18 21:10:15

Whatever Trump does now huge damage has been done to his administration and the world truly sees him for the neo-fascist that he is.

Grandad1943 Wed 20-Jun-18 21:15:53

Jalima1108, Putin is definitely getting that good publicity he needed.

I am wondering where the world will be in a few years time, and what a time for Britain to be leaving the joint strength and security of the European Union

paddyann Wed 20-Jun-18 22:26:22

Quizqueen then maybe ...just maybe the good old USA and UK should stop bombing or supplying the bombs that force these people from the middle east to take such drastic action.I'm quite sure NOBODY wants to leave their homes and jobs and see their families injured or killed .They just want to get to safety .I'm (fairly) sure you might do the same in those circumstances...but given your point of view maybe not!!

Lilypops Wed 20-Jun-18 22:55:16

Right from the start Trump has hated the Mexicans, remember the wall he was going to put up at the orders to keep them out, now he has turned his evil hand to helpless children ,What sort of human being can do that to defenceless children , separating them from their parents,, it's just heartbreaking to watch , Poor babies , He shouldn't be allowed to get away with it,

M0nica Thu 21-Jun-18 00:06:46

Whatever the rights or wrongs of illegal immigration, it has nothing to do with the children who are the innocent victims of their parents/Trumps actions.

To take the children from their parents, keeping sibling groups together and placing them in home like conditions, is, if not acceptable, at least shows some humanity, but to take these children from their parents, split family groups and treat the children as if they were murdering terrorists in Guantanamo: putting them in cages in windowless warehouses, or tents in the baking heat, marching them from one place to another within their accommodation in long lines with a guard both ends of the line- and then televising and photograph it - is child abuse in its grossest form.

Day6 Thu 21-Jun-18 01:20:30

We need to isolate this monster, make him aware that this behaviour is unacceptable in civilised society

I am a bit late to this thread but I think this is what has to happen GillT57

I am dumbfounded by Trump's thinking and behaviour. Where has he been all these years? Has he been isolated from decent human beings? I cannot put my finger on why he is so deranged. The rich, spoiled, arrogant brat bit is fairly easily explained, but the lack of humanity is very frightening and bewildering given his position in the world. He doesn't think, does he?

Day6 Thu 21-Jun-18 02:28:36

And to add to the above, he is also devoid of feeling.

MaizieD Thu 21-Jun-18 08:50:39

I don't think that Trump is an isolated phenomenon Day6. Millions of people voted for him and lots support his actions. That's 'democracy' for you. Great when it's going your way but scary when it lets things you don't agree with creep out of the woodwork.
